Wayne Thomas going...?

Quite a revealing story in the Lymington times on Christmas eve this week following his speeding offence which took him to 12 points. Instead of disqualifying him from driving - his solicitor pleaded that he needed to drive for the sake of his sick child that his wife and he look after meaning regular hospital visits to Bournemouth. He also stated in court that his contract expired in January 2010 and that he is likely to be going to a Northern club on loan meaning a long commute. He had investigated the option of a driver but it would be too expensive. It would mean them staying up North for the two or three days a week.

The way it apears is that Thomas is resigned to moving on bearing in mind most of this was said under oath at New Forest Magistrates. The magistrates then allowed him to keep his licence due to these mitigating circumstances. (he has 2 previous speeding convictions and one for using a mobile)

Thomas lives in Hinton, in between Christchurch and New Milton near the A35.

Taken from the Lymington Times so don't shoot the messenger...

Thomas signed August 2007- 3 year deal

If his contract was up January why loan? He would be a free agent. Could be a loan with view of option to sign I suppose

Mitigation is told to the bench by his Counsel so not under oath.

Thanks for the report though RW. Press reports in local papers always interesting

Well, if he is going out then we must have a couple of signings lined up because we need him as cover at the moment.

Exactly my thoughts.

We are deperately reliant on Jaidi in central defence at present and if Trotman goes..? as well...then we need TWO replacements PLUS some more cove for possible injuries, if our only other option is seeing Ollie Lancashire returning from loan.

But Thomas costs £3,000 a week in wages. Assume the club feel this is a luxury Div 1 side cannot afford for a "cover" player.

well of course, that may be a factor but....

AP hasn't said that he's NOT going to offer him a new contract - has he ?

WThas been looking a lot better recently and unless we have 2 or 3 others who are decidedly better, he ought to stay IMO.

Absolutely.

Its a bit of a no brainer ;)

Quite possibly but the Echo reported £3,000 a week so I used this as a starting point. I thought he was on more as well, that is why Lowe tried to get rid of him at the beginning of last season

Yes OK but at £3000 per week he must be one of the worst paid £1000000 players around ;)

He's crap, can't believe we wasted 1.2m on him. One of Burleys biggest mistakes.

On the contrary, one of Burley's smaller mistakes. :)

The bit that doesn't add up to me is that his contract expires in Jan 2010, so expects to go out on loan. This is nonsense. If his contract expires he is a free agent, no-one needs to loan him out. Suspect he already has a new club lined up, otherwise he would not be stating the bits about going up north.

I suspect that there will be several comings and goings in January - new RB, new CB, new MF and new striker as back up to Lambert being the priorities coming in, and several players moving on - Thomas, Saga, Lancashire, Molyneux, Pulis, Holmes, Forecast for instance. This is not due to their wages but because they are either not good enough (Lancs, Molyneux, Pulis, Forcast) or because they don't fit into AP's plans (Saga, Thomas, Holmes). None of them will generate any funds but will allow extra players to be brought in who want to play, are good enough and can be coached as part of a proper sized squad.

Wayne Thomas is on 7.5k a week I believe as that was one of the main issues when we went down, the fact that he had been out injured all season and must surely take a pay cut if he were to stay with us in League One. Of course, he didn't, and therefore is still on a silly wage for a backup defender!

I'm sure his contract expires in the summer of 2010, too, so some facts seem a bit dubious in this story! Certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over seeing him leaving, providing we can get a few more CBs in. Would free up some wages in any case!

If Wayne Thomas doesn't leave in January, he'll leave in the summer, whatever division we're in. I've mentioned on here before that Pardew has been given significant funds to strengthen the squad in January, with SIX players expected to come in. Make no mistake about it, there will be a big turnover of players in January and in the summer, and WT doesn't feature in those plans.

With regards to another poster who mentioned Lancashire's loan situation, he'll be back at Saints next week. He WON'T be signing for Grimsby on a permanent basis, it's more likely that he'll be sent out on loan to a League One club in the coming weeks. His contract is up at the end of the season too and whether he remains at Saints beyond that is anyone's guess.

I think people are reading too much into this. He was probably trying to avoid a stiff punsihment for his extra points and everything he sad about moving on was not binding in any way.

Good defender at this level but too expensive. Parrds is well aware of the 'lack of cover' suituation and will have a remedy in mind, I'm sure.
