A Lot of Positives from that display

A good performance, despite players missing due to injury or fitness;

A good workout against a side that were in the Championship last year;

We took our chances up front well, but were just unlucky that shots hit defenders legs or boots;

Our defence played well and restricted them to just the one goal;

We don't have the pressure of being favourites now;

Norwich lost their first game last season but still came top;

Southampton are traditionally slow starters so this result is quite normal for us;

Every team loses a few games, so we've got one of our defeats out of the way early.

If any more are needed Mr P will provide them in his post-match assessment.

Agree, it's definitely not all bad. I think the defence looked very good (apart from Harding) and Dickson looked very promising.

I do think it highlights even more so that we need someone else with height up front (with or without RL) some pace down the right, and a ball-winning midfielder with real bite. The frustrating thing is, this has been the case for months!

Let's just hope we do a Norwich without the change of manager.

Much of today was good

Plus we were never going to win anyway:-

1 On Sky;

2 Against a team with new Manager;

3 First day of the season;

4 With a lunch time kick off and;

5 Several key players missing or below full fitness

It was NEVER on

We are supposed to be red hot favourites to win the league and I saw nothing to back that up. Very disapointing and nothing positive on show as far as i'm concerned aside from the probability that it can't get any worse.

The performance first half was ok, second half it was shocking.

A good workout should have been done in friendlies, this is the serious stuff now you know.

We did'nt take our chances because we did'nt score.

The defence cost us the match.

Personal opinion but I never saw us as favourites although with the backing we should be.

I dont really give a stuff about any other teams results, this is saints we are talking about and they have never given me too much confidence.

Yes we always start slow but was hoping that our new era would produce something a bit different.

How nice it would have been to be discussing how many games we could play without a loss.

Mr P, I like him and always has, but has he got what it takes to kick this sleeping bear into action? He has let two of our best chances slip through his fingers in Papa and Antonio.

Disapointing result, but agree some positives. Hit by a sucker punch goal, but worried how many shots on target we had and our strengh in depth.

Also question the plan b today (and last season) would like to see changes a little earlier when things plan A isnt working. Needed to wait till 80 mins for there keeper to make a save and for the L1 'favs' thats worrying

What worries me a little is the mobility at the back. Jaidi looked very cumbersome and slow at times. Other sides with pace upfront will soon work this out and expose I feel. On the whole looked like same old Saints. Good at times but never convincing....

a good workout should be preseason, we should be ready to go today. I think it shows the value of RL as most of our play today was still as if we had him playing. I think we just have to realise it aint going to be easy. If only Harding had cleared straight over the bar with his right foot. Time will tell and lets just get behind the team for Tuesday when we beat the Cherries!!!!

Is there an opposite to Rose Tinted glasses? If so this is surely the definition of it.

Looked at the facts - Plymouth were relegated last year and ripe for the taking, we'd had a good run at the end of last season and should have carried that on. Either they've improved or we've got worse - which is it?

Ah, facts:

Possession: Southampton 52% Plymouth 48%

Attempts on target: Southampton 7 Plymouth 1

Attempts off target: Southampton 9 Plymouth 4

Corners: Southampton 10 Plymouth

We lost a game of football. Sh1t happens. We will win the league over the remaining 45 games.

I agree, no real change from last year especially without Rickie and Adam for an hour. Think Dickson and Butterfield are very decent additions, and Richardson still to feature. Think you're right re: Jaidi and mobility but he makes up for it in his reading of the game. I think Martin has the makings of a good defender so good cover but we do probably need a loanee at CB at least till jan.

The team hasn't really been freshened up. I think we the fans deserve a signing that gets us excited!!

Just a shame that we fell at the very first hurdle.

You're as entitled your view as I am to mine, but I can't see us finishing in the top two and based on today I can see us struggling to make the top six.

Says he thinks we played well in the second half. I admire your blind faith though as I used think like that when I was a teen.

Me too. It's a bit different for us nowadays though, eh dune? We get all confused and angry with life now that we are older. We wonder about the descending silence every time we walk into a room, get confused by the pretty Somali girls who laugh at us on the bus. The modern world makes us sh*t our silly pants in fear and confusion. We are baffled by exotic foodstuffs such as ’sizzling beef in black bean sauce’ and upset by the look of disappointment glued permanently to our mothers’ faces, as our grandchildren show their obvious crippling embarrassment at the way we act to cover up our past failures and fear of our dismal futures. Oh, to be a teenager again and have optimism.

One game out of many. Norwich lost 7-1 on the first game of the season. Please put it in perspective and perhaps create your own 'death doom and gloom' thread cos, if you hadn't realised, this is about the positives and not to stroke your ego because you ain't taken your anti-depressives tonight.

I thought there were some really good signs today, Dickson looks like a really good signing and some of the passing and moving was far better than most teams i saw in this league last season. Saying that Jaidi still to me doesn't look good enough, i thought last season he was a clogger with no speed and i still think so now.

Mind you with a feet lallana and lambert back in the side i still think there's no reason we can't win the league, plymouth were a well organised side that will cause a lot of teams problems and with our normal inability to start well it's no real surprise that we lost.

Hmm yeah, i used to pretend to be drunk and post absolute sh*te on web forums when i was a teen

That said, you are worse than alpine, he has an opinion and is generally negative but i actually think you WANT us and in particular NC to fail

"We always lose our first game" - Can't see how this justification can be used to excuse a poor performance. If i went in to work on monday and didn't perform because "traditionally" i don't like monday's, i'd be out on my arse. We are supposed to be favourites for this league. We are said to have the strongest squad in the league and we open our fixtures at home in front of the cameras. We finished last season well and essentially have the same first team squad plus a few additions. What better fixture to put down a marker and statement of intent to the rest of the league. Instead all i saw was a lukewarm performance by a squad of lukewarm players, who it seems, haven't been through a decent pre season. We should be starting as we mean to go on, instead we looked decidedly average and, more worringly, showed a lack of passion which is something the fans never lack.

Exactly.

If you know you have a problem with something, you work your f**king arse off to address that problem.

When I did my O levels, I did most revision on my weakest subject, not my strongest.

What did we do pre-season ? F**k around with line-ups, formations and tactics that it was obvious were never going to be used in anger when the League started. Todays team had never played together before.

Hopeless. Pre-season was a waste of time.

Why is it that because we always seem to lose our first game of the season,everyone thinks its "just one of those things?"

We should have come out fighting today and totally wiped the floor with Plymouth,but instead we had a go for a while,then gave up throughout the second half.

We have had all pre season to get this right and still we are making the same mistakes we always make.

Today was simply not good enough.

haven't won the opening game of a season since '99

The season is a long one and we need to get on to a winning run. Once we get a couple of wins the confidence will be up and we'll be away.

We really missed Lallana and Lambert today, we just kept faltering in the final third and with the chances we did create Plymouth defended very well.

We have to play at a higher tempo and not resort to hoofball. With Lambert is can be excusable because he is so dangerous in the air, but today it was incredibly aimless overall

You've got the attitude of a loser, we are "traditionally slow starters", that's ok then!..let's forget every game at the beginning of each season coz we usually lose anyway :rolleyes:

We have nine more points than we did at this stage last season!

Actually you are wrong. Our total is nine points better, but we have won one point less. The reason that's important is because if we translate it through to the end of the season we end up on 82 points, not enough.

We probably need 9 points more than we actually won last season, so 92. Therfore we are a point behind.

Isn't it funny that two people can look at the same match and come away with a different view point

I had a completely different take on it

Plymouth were not great, but they were worth their win

They came for a point, then got a goal, and ended up with all three

Saints Team was Pardew's Team, playing to HIs "system" or "tactics", and they did not have a clue as to how to break down a packed defence minde opponent

Don't think Plymouth will be the last, because EVERY visiting Team will be playing the same way, all 22 of them

Pardew once again showed himself to be tactically inept. He does not know how to CHANGE things if things are going against

OK, people will say I should not criticise after just one match, and we were up against a Team rated to be a Top Six contender, but I say Eyewash. This is the sort of Team that HAS to be beaten. What we saw on Saturday was just a continuation from last season when things were against us. Pardew doesn't know what to do, and he didn't try to change anything

Far too many people on here were of the opinion that we would "walk" the League, well, we arn't. Time for a reality check, and the reality is we are just an ordinary Division One Team, who cannot change tactics mid match to turn things around

Ricky Lambert missing ?? well, if people are just relying on a free kick specialist to get us out of the mire, then that just about sums it up

"A good workout" ??? It was a LEAGUE MATCH , or do you mean it was "A good workout" for Plymouth as well ???

As I said, Two people, Two views

Funny old game innit ??
