Chez Posted 1 March, 2011 Share Posted 1 March, 2011 Can't see Nugent joining us. He wants another Premiership size wage, so that counts us out. Should he lower his demands then that will bring the skates back into play.
Crab Lungs Posted 1 March, 2011 Share Posted 1 March, 2011 I met David Nugent in Marbella; he called me a scummer. That said, he's actually alright and has done it at Champ level before so why not? Don't think he takes our rivalry too seriously anyway. The biggest problem would be his wages... then again, he wont' get another contract like the one he got a Portsmouth and besides, we'll probably be one of the few clubs who could afford him outside the PL. Lord Duckhunter Posted 1 March, 2011 Share Posted 1 March, 2011 I'd take him, but feel he'll go up North. Blackpool seem to pick up a few rejects, and there was talk of him going on loan earlier in the year, so I reckon he'll end up there.

Chez Posted 1 March, 2011 Share Posted 1 March, 2011 The biggest problem would be his wages... then again, he wont' get another contract like the one he got a Portsmouth maybe not but he is available on a free rather than the £6m he came for, so that usually adds a few bob to your next wage deal. I'm not saying he's a £6m player now, but over three years that was effectively £40k a week on top of his £30k a week wages. You could take him on £30k a week for three years or spend £3m on a striker and then pay them £10k a week (what £3m striker will accept £10k a week I might add). His record just doesn't justify his fee or his wages...58 league goals in 273 matches mostly in the Chamionship or L1 (or 2 with Bury?). I don't know what Ricky or Barny earn but I'm guessing less than 10k a week and their goals per game in the lower leagues is far superior. He's a 3-5k a week lower league journeyman who got lucky in the Bagpuss madness era...we can do far better. Also funnier to let them keep him in my opinion.....without taking in to account his wages he's cost them around £600k per goal so far!

True, but the flipside is you radically alter the wage structure within the club. After all, what do you think the likes of Lambert, Lallana, Fonte and Chamberlain would do if they found out Nugent (or whoever) was being paid three times as much as them? If there's one thing the Pompey saga has taught us, it's that the total financial impact of high wage earners at the club goes far beyond the simple cost of the wage itself, it's the inflation to the average wage that is the killer. Or, to give it its proper name, "the John Utaka effect".

He was a top player for Preston in the Championship scoring 34 league goals in 86 starts and worthy of his move to the Premiership. Once at the skates he had a shocker in a preseason game and ****flaps decided there and then that he had made a mistake signing him. ****flaps never played him leading to a massive loss of confidence. He hardly got a game in two years and when he finally got in the side it was playing out wide. The Premiership was perhaps just a little too early for him, but now having refound his form and confidence he is showing at Championship level that he is pretty decent. I'd take him like a shot. He won't come here so it matters not.

The other thing is if you sign a guy on £30k a week it is very difficult to offload him should it not work out - as the skates are finding. You just can't say with all those weirdo contracts that the "non-execs" insisted on to placate Burley.I very much doubt it though. It could well be that certain players available on free transfers got enormous signing on fees which linked to their actual time with the club actually produced salaries in the region of 1.5 million £/annum.Euell,John and Idiakiez spring to mind. Big Bad Bob Posted 1 March, 2011 Share Posted 1 March, 2011 one? watched him closely then? he had a lot more than one good season and has played well in many games. not a great goalscorer but a pretty good player. he'll get a move to a top flight club though, merely because he's experienced and free. blackpool, wolves, west brom, brum, one of these. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. As a striker his goals to games ratio is not *THAT* good (273 games 68 goals). I've not seen him play, why would I, his only sub appearance for England resulted in a goal he "stole" off of Defoe (or was it Owen). Another Dean Ashton for mine.. ericb Posted 1 March, 2011 Share Posted 1 March, 2011 I've not seen him play, why would I Then why the hell would you be able to proclaim so confidently that he's not that good. Football is about more than stats you know, there's some strickers who are absolutely fantastic at creating space for others or playing the ball/knocking it on/holding it up, of course their goals to games ratio isn't going to be great but what they create will be. Sorry if that comes across as harsh but it really does my head in all the internet geeks* who throw numbers around yet seem to either a: never go or b: have never played the game in their lives. *n.b. not necessarily saying you are since i have no idea about you beside this post but there's many like that online
