Preferred way of going up.

It looks as if we are going up; that much is obvious. Brighton may be a tinpot club but you have to hand it to them; it looks as if they will fluke the league this year after many decades of trying. The most likely outcome is that we will be promoted in 2nd place, but as we know the only other teams that would be in the playoffs we have smashed to bits anyway!

Would you want another guaranteed screamer of a winning day at Wembley Playoff final or to finish second?

I'd actually quite like another season in L1 but I know what it'll do to the club and the team...

I wouldn't!

Games against Exeter, Chesterfield, Rochdale and Yeovil are boring and the away games are horrendous.

I want to see us compete at places like Leicester, Cardiff, Swansea etc.

onwards and upwards...

Think you are forgetting that Huddersfield and MK Dons have both beaten us this season, plus we couldn't beat Orient at home.

We would be favorites, but it would still very much be a 1 in 4 chance lottery.

I love seeing Saints as a successful club, and that's what I want for us, no question. That obviously involves competing at the top level, and that's firmly what I believe we'll be doing in a few years time.

However, I just find the Premiership and Championship to be a bit bland. Give me a Huish Park over a Ricoh Arena any day of the week.

Where's the thrill if we were guaranteed to win the playoff final? In that case might as well just celebrate now ;)

Automatic.

Automatic Automatic Automatic.

Automatic.

For the last time, Automatic.

F**k the play-offs, I want to be able to relax this summer.

I agree, though in fairness the playoffs are right after the end of the regular season, so it aint going to affect your summer either way.

Mmm,are you sure?

Automatic promotion would be wonderful.

Playoffs would be the minimum requirement this season i would have thought.

Brighton are far from being a 'tinpot' club. They have a millionaire backing them (Tony Bloom), have a new state of the art stadium that will open in time for their first game in the Championship in August, and they have sponsorship from American Express, which sounds a little more impressive than our new shirt sponsors, who none of us had ever heard of. As for 'fluking' the league, they are unbeaten at home and are 10 points ahead of Saints. In three games since we were relegated we've failed to beat them and they won 3-1 at the SMS last season. In Poyet they also have a respected manager with his own football legacy at the highest levels.

As for us going up via a guaranteed win in the Playoffs, there is no such thing. In the play-offs no club is guaranteed getting to the final, let alone winning it. In the play-offs anything can happen with a 3-1 chance against getting promoted.

We've just had an excellent run of 4 wins and that is the way to get promoted. Maybe if it hadn't been for the injuries to arguably our best two players, we would have won against Charlton but the fact remains that it was one of our games in hand and we got 1 point from it, not 3. I remain hopeful of promotion, but far from confident, whereas Brighton could lose to us, Colchester and Huddersfield and still go up.

Maybe it is impossible to guarantee going up via playoffs, but if we were to play Bournemouth over 2 legs and then Huddersfield in the final, what would you be thinking about our chances ?

You'd fancy us over two games against anyone in this league, however how often does the team that finish 5th or 6th go up via play offs? And it would be sods law that we beat Bournemouth 3 times comfortably during the season then they fluke a win over us in the play offs.

Last League Game - 7th May

Play off final - 29th May

I would rather Saints used those 3 weeks to prepare for the Championship, signings etc, rather than being unsure which League they were in. A playoff campaign may mean Saints miss out of players.

Yeah, but they wont, even if we win automatic promotion. The entire footballing establishment p*sses off to Faliraki, Aya Nappa, Ibiza, etc. and drinks copious amounts of watered down local booze for a month and nothing ever happens for 6-8 weeks despite increasingly loud and tedious warnings about needing to hit the ground running emanating from the Austrian Alps.

Automatic, absolutely no contest. Especially as the team that finish third normally gas it and I wouldn't be surprised if we do that!

Can anybody provide stats to prove that out, the position 4th to 6th that normally wins the playoffs ?

Tinpot club? Fluked the league? I think your opinion is way off the mark and worthless at that to.

Based on the last 2 years anyway, Millwall won after finishing 3rd and Scvnthorpe won the playoffs after scraping into 6th.

Just have to get promoted I have enjoyed our journey in League 1 had some cracking away days but the club have to move on.

Automatic please I would love a extra 3 games & a day out at OT and if we won the play offs we would have WON something however we cant take a chance & we really need to go up so AUTO all the way.

For me mind Brighton have won it & fair play to them they have been so consistent so we have to fight all the way for 2nd spot its going to be exciting

I can see no way of catching Brighton now, so 2nd will have to do

Not over yet still ten games to play and anything can happen. We lose a couple and you win a couple will make it interesting.

This means that apart from one fluke year, the best playoff team has won the playoffs. And if we took a closer look at the form in the last 6 weeks or so of 2008/2009, I'll bet Scvnthorpe had the best in that division.

And people carp on about the "lottery" of the playoffs

EDIT: what this means to me is that we finish 3rd, our greatest threat in the playoffs is probably MK Dons.

Brighton haven't fluked the league - they've just been grinding out results even when they don't play well. They've won 1-0 in 4 of their last 6 games...

They're an organised team and hard to beat, I can't see them dropping many points now we're on the home straight of the season (except of course 3 points when we come to town! ;) )

Still got to aim for first even though there is really very little chance of it happening. Aim for first and get 2nd. Brighton totally deserve to be where they are in the league. I think they have won 9 of their last 10 which is bloody impressive.

If we didn't finish 2nd I would be devastated. I could not take having to go through the playoffs.

IMO i think you will finish second comfortably. Southampton certainly dont belong in this division.

What i have been impressed with by them is the manner of their wins. They were blowing teams away at one point 4-0 at Charlton and P'boro i believe but they have also won a lot of games 1-0, just done enough which is what teams that win things do.
