Turkish Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 Ironic considering he was booed at half time. The bloke was sh*t for us a a total cock and sh*t last night. I dont mind giving ex players that were good lads and put a shift in for us but he is one player who definitely should not have been given one. Pilchards Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 Because he never scored against us for once! IMHO I would offer a standing ovation to these current players. Bale Crouch Delap Beattie Ormerod Bridge and Matt Oakley.
Super_Uwe Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 I would imagine it was probably a mix of us being two goals in the lead and the fact he hadn't scored against us! We usually succumb to ex-players finding the net against us....

Fowllyd Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 It was most of the ground, why? The bloke is a div. Most of the ground applauding, or most of the ground standing? I don't reckon the majority applauded, and I didn't notice much if any standing (other than those who were already standing). A polite round of gentle applause is all I was aware of. I've no idea where you got the impression of a standing ovation.

scott_saints Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 I clapped a little bit. Certainly not a "standing ovation" type clap. Bailey Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 I gave him a little clap as he left the pitch, but certainly not a standing ovation. Mainly because a) he didn't score against us, b) we were 2-0 up and c) he's never said a bad word about the club since leaving. I think he's a different player to the one that left us a few years back, seems to have grown up quite a bit IMO.

And you seriously think people are stupid for singing his name because of afew quid booking fee brought in? In most other forms of entertainment (concerts for example) you always pay a booking fee, it covers the admin costs. You shouldn't be surprised it's creeping into football. What a ridiculous post. I love that about some of our fans - the club is a business, not a charity. You want us to spend millions of pounds on players in league 1? Then don't moan when a couple of quid goes on the tickets to accrue additional revenue to help pay for these transfer fees, wages etc. You should be grateful to Cortese, he saved our club and brought us to the brink of promotion with as bright a future as we've had in a long, long time. Sour Mash Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 Great, comfortable win last night, but some of the most cringeworthy support I have ever experienced following Saints. the "BWP robs from the Skates" song (sung early in the first half, endless "Red and White barmy army", that stupid Cortese song and s**t one about Connolly, plus applauding BWP etc. After excellent support away at Charlton and when 2-0 down on Saturday against MK I thought we were a lot better than that rubbish. If we need the extra money so much, how come we don't have a sponsor this season? The ticket tax just punishes some of our most loyal fans that live dotted around the country and don't have such easy access to go to the ticket office in person. I know quite a few who have had to pay out a fair bit this season because of it. Cortese is here as a businessman, looking to create a long-term return on Liebherr's original investment, I'm sorry if I find it cringeworthy that some fans sing a song about him because we're now in with a shout of promotion out of the third division Edited 6 April, 2011 by Sour Mash

shurlock Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 (edited) Gave him a little clap, nothing major though. Whatever anyone thinks of him, he was part of a horror period in our club's history which only us fans and a handful of players (AL, KD, BB) know anything about. And in his defence, he never showed any attitude during that time (if anything, he and surman would have stayed if we had not made a mess of administration). Never set the world alight but got some good goals (e.g. his brace against wolves) and left some fond memories-standouts include his celebrations when we came from 2-0 behind to beat preston and when he stood with the saints fans away at brum. Always approachable and enjoyed a bit of banter. Saw the way he patted kelvin yesterday after the ball went for a goal kick, still some fondness for the place. Yes we were winning and he hadn't come back and scored against us; but the applause was also a collective realisation that, at last, we're putting BWP's days behind us and we have our eyes set on bigger prizes. Why sing songs for Adkins, Lambert or Lallana then? Everyone who is employed at SFC is there primarily for a job. If we stopped paying them, they'd all bugger off eventually. The players on the pitch are putting the ball in the net, playing the through balls and defending bravely, traditionally we as "supporters" are there to cheer them on. Cortese is sat on a padded seat picking up a nice amount of cash and hasn't shown me any reason whatsoever why I should give him any recognition, he has made some good decisions but also some rubbish ones, verging on the bizarre earlier this season. I also think his approach to season ticket holders leaves a lot to be desired, it is clear to me they are intent on treating the fans as cash cows and will milk as much money from us as possible, the whole "we are a rich club we don't need a sponsor" was a load of b0llocks

Professor Posted 6 April, 2011 Share Posted 6 April, 2011 Disapointed this thread should even have been opened, but Turkish set the tone with asterisked and initialised obscenities. BWP did as well for Saints as his ability allowed, which is about as much as can be asked of any player. He left under a cloud but that is no reason other than to show appreciation for someone who used to play for the club and who tried as best he could to help the team win its games.
