sadoldgit Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 ...for a change we did our wheeling and dealing in the early part of the close season and had our squad sorted before the start of the season? I know it isn't our way but surely now that we are in a healthier financial position it would be better to sort the squad, get everyone settled and focussed well before the start of the new season and hit the ground running? View From The Top Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 The club, from top to bottom, seem more focused than, IMHO, anytime since LMc. We will hit the ground running.

SO16_Saint Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 ...and have a squad fit and ready for the season ahead? What an absurd notion. Much prefer a sh*t start to the season, manager change, poor form and turmoil - all before November....!

Saint_clark Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Pretty sure that, bar a backup CM, everyone was happy with our squad last season. Every team in the world can look at their squad and say "we could do with X player in Z position".

However I do agree with the OP, get in there early and secure your targets. You may have to pay them a few more weeks wages (small change in the scheme of things Mr Lowe) but you can then get on with the business of preparing the squad. Reading bagged Leroy Lita on day one of the summer window and stormed the Championship.

krissyboy31 Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 The advantage of automatic promotion is that the season is done and dusted on Saturday and we already know what division we will be playing in next term. Hopefully the planning will already of started and targets identified.
CWD Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 As Pardew always banged on about, we still have to wait for the PL boys to do their business first. We don't wanna miss out on a gem! Would be nice to have a squad ready by mid July though - for a change!
Leslie Charteris Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Never gonna happen. One thing Monkey Boy down the road was right about was the problems caused by the transfer window ending a long time after the season starts. If we are going to dabble in the transfer market, it is only going to be in the crumbs that fall off the big boys' table. NPC maybe, but we are not big players - yet! I'm now going to sit and wait for the four horsemen to put in an appearance, as they're bound to be waiting in the wings. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 I get the impression that the 'Don' likes a bargain and refuses to pay (what he considers to be) over the odds for a player. As selling clubs tend quite understandably hold out for the best possible price this all leads me to suspect that any signings this summer are more likely to be later rather than sooner. As the club is losing money yet again you could well say that any responsible football club in our position shouldn't be 'splashing the cash' too readily anyway - a view I have some sympathy with. Nevertheless we're reliably informed that a long term strategy to return SFC to its former glories is in place and with that in mind I wonder if promotion will now unlock another tranche of Liebherr cash straight into the transfer kitty? Transfer Kitty - that darn cat always needs feeding .....

revolution saint Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 I'd agree with the OP but then in an ideal world I think we all would. My hope is that we have already identified the players we want and are now just waiting for the season to be over so that we can "take care of business". To be fair last season we did get Dickson, Richardson and Butterfield in fairly early so the only players signed late were the loan players. If we follow that pattern again then anyone we plan to bring in on a free should get signed up relatively quickly.
The Cat Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 I just want us to sign the best players available to improve the team, WHENEVER they are available. Agreed. Hopefully we can get a couple in early whose contracts have expired, but we'll probably need to wait right up until the end of the window to finalise the squad. SNSUN Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 quick sale of Ox-C if he is going. We should and can keep him. Do we need the money from his sale? 10 million would buy us some great players but as we've seen, this lad has great potential and if he keeps developing with us he can reach it with us. Totally agree about signing players up early, before the good ones ate taken but with enough time for them to gel into the squad, but the good loans may not happen until closer to the end of August. Every team in the world can look at their squad and say "we could do with X player in Z position". We need some cover outwide more than anything. Can imagine how well Richardson would do playing wide right in the Championship... I agree though, we really don't need much, replace any first teamers we may lose (hopefully none) promote youth players in place of the likes of Holmes, Wotton etc. At most bring in three new players IMO marquee signing at centre back, backup CM and a backup winger/striker type with a bit of pace. Thinking about it we could probably make do without another central midfielder if we can keep hold of Stephens.

MerceSaint28 Posted 6 May, 2011 Share Posted 6 May, 2011 Completely agree witt the thread and i think it is the reason we start the season so poorly historically. I really don't think we need to spend much money as there are so many good playersa avaialble on a free. With the free agent market, we have to move fast as the Danns/ Pratleys/ Kamara's of this world who are avaialble for nothing move fast. The short odds for Saints indicate the bookies think we will invest and they are rarely wrong. The one criticism i have with people on this forum is that people get too attached to players. If there are better ones available than what we have already, we should always be looking to improve...it's called progress. Therefore players like Forte, Gobern, Seabourne etc should not just be re-tained because they helped get us up. There is no room for sentiment, the club needs to move forward and unfortunately some of the squad will not be good enough to take us there.
