We must spend now

If we are to compete... next season will be too late

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/10062011/58/championship-league-adopts-uefa-finance-rules.html

If we have any money to invest in the squad, now is the time.

This new ruling will stop us flexing our financial muscle next season.

Unless of course you think our squad is good enough to get us to the Premiership.

Next season (2012-13) the relegated Premier sides will have increased parachute payments that will give them an even bigger advantage.

Or alternatively, all the other clubs that have been outspending us beyond their means won't be able to any more and we'll have a better shot of attracting players with our excellent facilities and being able to afford bigger wages than most in this division.

You would hope so. If we don't get anyone this week then it could become a problem for gelling as a team etc.

I think the next 2 or 3 weeks are going to tell us an awful lot about next season's prospects and ultimately our longer-term future. I have and still maintain that we need at least 4 or 5 new players in if we are to compete at the top end of the table; I think the current squad would do well to finish in the top half. As I see it we need a quality replacement for Jaidi, at least one maybe two central midfielders, a centre forward with pace and who can be relied upon for 20 goals, plus a decent attacking right back (what I've seen of Butterfield and Richardson is lower to mid table quality at best).

I accept the reasons why we haven't brought anyone in yet, but we're now at the point where players are back from holidays and signings start happening, so I'm hoping to see some from us pretty soon.

really hard question, which none of us can accurately answer, is how the current team will make the transition.

Clearly the league is harder, although you could argue that playing bigger teams, playing decent football on decent pitches also has its benefits after our season of cup finals.

But how good will Barnard, Guly, Lambert, Lallana, Ox-C, Morgan be for example do? They could be every bit as good as the established championship players some are desperate to sign - or they could be found wanting.

The way we cruised the second half of the season - a season with injuries to Lambert, Lallana, Morgan, Guly, Ox-C and Barnard may make it harder for Adkins to justify spending - are these potential signings clearly better than what we have, good enough to break up the team and relegate squad players?

Having seen what Norwich did last season I am at a loss to work out how well our current squad will do.

That said, on the assumption that at least the top end of the league will be strong, my thinking now is 3-4 players needed, at least 3 of which should be first team starter material. Probably the spine of team would be my preferred area to strengthen - central defence, central midfield, centre forward. Possibly a winger as the 4th.

Word on the street is that Cortese will not be spending anything on transfers this season but has decided to spunk the lot on hookers and coke. He will be inviting 6 lucky ST holders to join in the fun.

I've got my invite, have you had yours?

Norwich have raised expectations - and did it without the sort of signings people are saying are needed on here

The UEFA rules allow for investment of up to £40m over a 3 year period from the owners as long as it is turned into equity. The Football League financial rules will see something similar to this (though perhaps not as large and is still to be decided).

The UEFA and Football League financial rules also have spending on stadiums, training grounds and academies exempt from counting towards the figure to break even.

No one cares about the training ground ad stadium on this thread. Please stay on topic.

Yes they have but I am not clear how they managed it given its meant to be such a tough league - maybe it isn't quite so tough. I assume our taget is top 6 next season and if it is my guess is we are not strong enough to complete with the current squad to achieve that.

I am certainly not in any sort of panic over lack of signings just yet, the problem is we get linked with players like Danns then when they go elsewhere we think we have failed, yet there was never any proof we were actually interested in him as far as I can tell.

It is on topic, the rules mentioned in the opening post allow any benefactor to spend as much as they want on infrastructure (which boost revenue streams allowing for more to be spent), and may also allow owners inject money in the form of equity into the club.

Erm it's a load tougher this year than last.

Cortese's stated aim of not just getting to The Prem and being a bottom half or yo-yo club, but becoming a top 6 force raised expectations. Maybe it was never more than an aspiration because to achieve what NC said he intended would mean a transformation of the club. Whether or not there is any strengthening of the squad this close season, its looking too late for it to be transformational for the coming year.

Norwich strengthened considerably, striker, centre back, midfield, for a start and if we are to compete we need to do the same. Apart from two or three this squad lacks pace and in the higher division we will be found out.

I think we need to calm down a bit.

We've got some serious hysterical farts as fans. We will have lots of targets, some that haven't even been speculated about. We will make signings and they will improve the team, as we have done in the past 2 seasons. It doesn't need to be done tommorow, or by 8pm tonight.

It's about getting the right players to fit into the pretty tight group we have at the moment. Gelling will not even come into the equation as we will not be buying a new team.

I don't think anyone is getting hysterical - merely observing that clubs who are being touted as promotion candidates have started spending money on players we have been rumoured to be interested in.

There is surely sense in making signings in time for pre-season training, so the players have more time to gel. The fact we haven't is provoking debate which has been pretty sensible until you sarcastically dived in with your hysteria jibe and your rather ridiculous presumption that "we will make signings". Or perhaps you know something we don't.

Year after years it's like some of you wipe your memories and talk like you've never seen a season of football before. All sensible comments and expectations gone in june. Is it just boredom? Surely this forum can't be that pathetic? Relegation or promotion it's the same tired, cliched, impatient moaning every damn summer.

Please just go on holiday.

I've read some serious OTT comments on here over the last few days, we're destined for relegation if we don't sign anyone soon, we're being left behind...etc etc.

We really shouldn't be comparing ourselves to Promotion candidates yet though, we've just got ourselves into this league. And we will make signings, anyone who thinks otherwise is being a bit silly.

they did it without "stars" finishing well above the teams with Danns, Maynard etc, by being well managed and a good team and coming up with momentum (admittedly they didn't finish their league 1 campaign as well as we did ;))

I reckon nothing will happen or be announced until 1st July when the window officially opens. It's possible we've already signed people but NC has asked them to be quiet about it. You know how tight lipped NC is, even he, I think, knows the squad needs strengthening.

KEEP THE FAITH

based on what?

tbf, the teams coming down last year were utter tosh.

Portsmouth were a mess, had no team and no money and were never going to be a threat. Burnley had a rubbish manager in charge and weren't very strong anyway. Hull were financially messed up and struggled to get anyone in.

The teams coming down this year already have established premiership squads and seem to have the means to add to it. The weakest of the relegated squads is probably Blackpool, but with holloway in charge they'll still be a tough team to play.

A myriad of reasons which I expect you know and as I am on my phone I cannot be bothered to type out. I expect if you asked npc fans, the majority would tell you that they believe this season will be harder than the last. Look on football forums to see that if you don't believe me.

reckon it probably will be harder. Norwich got auto without signing any 'stars' or spending much.

This is football, not fantasy football - more to it than being linked to every player going - and I do wonder if some are giving some of our existing players a disservice.

Talk Sport this morning said that the Oxo deal with Arsenal is a done deal, if this is the case perhaps NC is waiting to use the funds from that sell which is worrying because NC said we would not sell Oxo, plus it also suggest's that there are no other funds apart from those raised by selling players.

Rumoured that Shelby is being loaned to Blackpool by Liverpool.

Anyone would think wed jumped 5 leagues!? This ain't that great a league, teams from league 1 have coped very well without big spending!

Swansea were promoted in 2008 now in prem, Leicester last year made the play offs after promotion and Norwich again strolled it!! Leeds and millwall coped fairly easily too.......

It's not that tough
