Adkins - "Be Patient"

Yes but are they saying this because our first choices have turned us down?

Broken record springs to mind! You do realise, there are sh1t loads of good, out of contract players, many will be desperate for a club come the first week of August, but choosy now. Also, as has been stated so many times on here, we only want players who offer improvement, not squad players, we should only spend when it's right for the club, not when it's right for the fans.

You cant blaim NA or even NC for this. Theyre not gonna pursue a player who doesnt want to play for us.

I don't think it has anything to do with not wanting to play for us exactly. It's more a case of NC ensuring that wage costs do not spiral beyond our means and there are probably players and agents out there... (a) not realising there's a recession on (why would they - they don't live in the real world) and (b) thinking Saints have a bottomless pit of money to spend.

I think NA is doing a good job explaining the situation and whether we like that or not, it's a sensible position in the larger scheme of things. We'll get new players I feel sure - whether the final squad is good enough to compete for a push to the Prem is debatable, but that's what makes football such a great sport and why we're here discussing it. As NA and Lambert also have said, it would seem there's a great team spirit in the camp now and that's something money cannot buy.

Not necessarily, this article offers up a reflection on the state of the transfer market this summer so far

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/8611865/Fair-Play-rules-leave-clubs-with-unwanted-players-in-a-dormant-market.html

Aside from Manchester United, whose £49.8 million spending spree has largely been funded by the £80 million sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid two years ago, and some astute business undertaken by Newcastle and Sunderland, the Premier League transfer market has been dormant

...........

Karl Oyston, the Blackpool chairman who continues to play hardball with Liverpool over Charlie Adam, insisted last month that his club will wait until mid-August before making a concerted effort to trade in the market.

That is when panic is likely to set in, but who will blink first? The players on bloated contracts or the clubs foolish enough to pay them?

Mind you we said something similar last summer

I like NA and I'm not blaming the bloke for those players turning us down! At the end of the day sharp is being loyal' and cork is looking for bigger and better ie west ham!

'Bigger and better' would be a CURRENT Premier League team not one in the same division as us. They may offer bigger wages, that does not make them bigger or better than us.

Absolutely. And too much money for an incoming 'big name' can create tensions and destroy team spirit.

christ..does it matter what the wording is....fact is (you have to get used to it) we are not at the top of the picking tree for transfers this summer

Of course we were serious about signing Billy Sharp (and Donny even accepted our offer) but it's no-ones fault if the guy doesn't want to come, and as we've " set the bar at £3 mill+ ", he might even see a Prem.club come in for him yet. His choice.

I don't think that NA had a LONG " wish-list " of potential signings, andas many of us on this site are saying

..why buy someone who isn't as good as or better than we have already.

I don't know who our other " first choices " were (you used the plural...?) but I'd bet that NA isn't too preturbed when he looks at his present squad sheet anyway. We move on and wait for the next "rumour " I suppose.

....if that's not enough ..you can contribute to the HCDAJFU thread which looks like " server-breaker " to me already.

What?.......... I thought we had bottomless pockets.......you mean we're not going to sign loads of PL stars?................how will we cope without a team of at least 20 top PL players plus 20 more equally good replacements?......

I know that but similarly neither are Wet Spam now, and I would certainly not consider them bigger or better than us.

never thought of it like that, but you're right. VW

Oh hypocondriac, write something positive and prove us wrong, please!

What is there to say that is positive I agree there is nothing negative going on at the moment although some fans are having minor problems getting season tickets and others like my brother are having to pay more because they are in their early 60s

But the team is in the same state as it was at the end of last season .

I have no problem with that because no doubt some more players will be added before the end of August.

However there was/is an expectation that because of the plan to get to the PL in the next 3 years we would have to buy a number of quality players to achieve this objective.

It does surprise me that quality players such as Cork and possibly Sharpe have not joined us on our way to the PL.

I post plenty of positive stuff. If we had signed sharp or cork I would have been extremely positive (we still may do.) until that day comes however I will still say it as I see it.

What people are forgetting is that Adkins and NC seem to be after players that will only go into the first team as likely automatic first XI picks unless injured or badly out of form. Therefore, these players are in a higher price bracket that we've been bidding for - in fact, probably higher than since 2002/3! They attract a number of clubs from NCP and PL and people are going to have to be patient as NC and NA do a sales job on them to get them to join. Sharp is a dead deal I'd imagine as he seems to get a nosebleed if he leaves Yorkshire but we are the only ones with a bid accepted for Cork so we know funds ARE available. There's the usual rubbish in the press about Ox-C but if we needed the money we'd have sold him in January surely? The press don't have a clue, the news headlines in the last few days should tell everyone that. I wouldn't wipe my backside with the Sun, Mail, even the Telegraph etc.

The alternative is to go back to the bloated squads of mid-last decade - Kenton, Van Damme, Nilsson, Jakobsson etc. Think of how much money we wasted on all of those "squad" players who made little or no positive contribution. If we did get promoted, we'd then have to pay squad players off or loan them out part-subsidised.

You won't get no thanks on here, with that common sense attitude!

Except for Stephens, N'Guessan and Gobern, and some youngsters who were let go of course.

There will be a lot of movement for loans and sales when the the Premier League teams name their 25-man squads like last year.

Maybe a lot of clubs including Saints hoping to get in someone who they previously thought was unattainable becoming available at that point.

Good point - when does that happen? End of july, isn't it?

No, I think the board are shrewd enough to know what they are doing. They would not announce or release info. for fun. They're up to something and know what they are doing.

I’ve had a change of attitude over the weekend having had time to think. I hate to say the hysteria from fickle fans may have tainted my opinion slightly but I am more patient and relaxed having digested all the info. learned over the past few weeks combined with chatting to some contacts over the weekend.

Regardless of who we know, I think Saints are playing a shrewd game. Purely by my judgment, I believe we will wait until the exact moment is right to bring in the quality, rather than the quantity. Adkins talking about transfer speculation is a first but he is a clever guy and our board now seem a far cry from the absolute senseless carnage of past boards managed by idiotic chairmen.

The key contract renewals of Lambert and Lallana (no doubt Fonte will be top of our agenda when necessary and rewarded for his commitment and performance) show our foresight and ambition. Martin too is good news for an up and coming squad player. I was cynical at the initial club comments last week, thinking in an Alpine manner (i.e. the club have announced this to appease a lack of transfer activity prior to boost season ticket sales). That attitude is wrong.

I believe we are bedding our foundations, showing to the entire squad performance and quality will be rewarded with good contracts and the new players hopefully coming in will re-enforce our push for promotion and striving to achieve the shared goal, promotion whilst not upsetting the great level of spirit Adkins has worked his socks off to achieve (esp. with the promotion pride). I think (or hope) we will bring in at least 3 quality (EPC/PL standard) players. CB, CM and CF. That will be costly but it makes much more sense in revitalizing the entire squad with top quality rather than 6 fringe (or worse, inadequate) players akin to the tricky January transfer window of last season. Why replace “adequate” players in other positions when we could get promotion with 3 (I think 4) key additions combined with the current squad. After all, if we look top 5 come Jan, the fringe players then could be replaced with much higher value/quality for the next phase (EPC/PL standard) while the existing contracts run down. Makes perfect sense to me.

I think we are all giving the club less credit than they deserve. They have not made many mistakes yet and are learning every day. Have faith. I do despite being dubious last week. When they make a horrendous decision, then moan but until they do, count yourself lucky we have backing and a board than actually care about how we play football and support the manager.

Good post.

I am not worried at the lack of signings. We already have a good team who ripped L1 to pieces last year. The NPC is a step up, sure - and we need strengthening in some key positions, but with the right 3 or 4 signings, we'll be competitive.

Football is a team game played by human beings, not some numbers game filled with interchangeable robots. You only need to look at the likes of Man City to see that filling your squad with superstars is only part of the puzzle. We've got a bunch of players who've played with each other for some time, some genuine talent and good prospects for the future. How many teams in the NPC can say that?

EDIT:

thedelldays thread which I didn't read upfront, which covers similar ground
