Manchester United Security alert

Just heard on the BBC that it looks like the suspicious package was left in place by Manchester United's own security people after a training exercise.

How the hell can that happen with out someone saying 'hang on, I know what that is'.

I know security and people's safety is paramount but surely there has to be some consequences for the club for messing up so much and causing the game to be postponed. Imagine how the Bournemouth fans feel having coughed up the cash to get there and back today.

what would be more worrying.

the device was found by a fan? I doubt a fan would be looking for it.

It must have been there for days. Probably when they had the anti-terrorism exercise in Manchester earlier in the week?

guess they don't check the spaces in OT before opening it up to 76k people

The news earlier said it was found by a member of staff

What a shambles!

This doesn't quite add up to me. Highly convenient to just pass this off as one big mistake.

It all reminds me of those episodes a few years ago when the floodlight failures were caused by betting syndicates. Strange things happen when large amounts of money get involved. It all depends on whether you favour cock-up theories or conspiracies.

First feeling is relief that nobody tried to plant a bomb, but you've got to feel for all the thousands of fans, police, soldiers and all the rest inconvenienced for nothing.

Could the Bournemouth fans reasonably claim compensation from United/whatever company did this exercise?

Why? What's the alternative, that they're covering up a genuine bomb?

There's a plausible propaganda motive to that, I guess, but then 'suspicious packages' aren't really en vogue with the likely terrorist suspects.

Apparently they're refunding all tickets AND offering free tickets for Tuesday - good reaction to a colossal cock up tbf...

Also nice to see that they've given the bloke that came from Sierra Leone to see his first United game at Old Trafford a ticket for the FA Cup final

Surely if they have refunded your ticket then the game would be free anyways? Or have I just interpreted this wrong?

I think you have, the two are separate. Refunding money for a game that didn't take place is the first step and many of these people will not be able to make the rearranged match. They will not be out of pocket, apart from the travel. They could have then charged for the new game but have decided to let the fans in for free, which is to be commended.

They've refunded the ticket for today's game, but then also given them a free ticket for the next game. So instead of just getting a new ticket for a new game, you get your money back altogether so you're watching the game free of charge.

But it wasn't their fault. It was an outside company.

I was thinking about that, but even so shouldn't someone have thought.. oh we have that company in the other day who were searching for fake bombs with dogs. It's not like they wouldn't have been aware they were using the stadium?

It was a company that they contracted. Many of the functions of a big organisation like that will be sub-contracted, but the responsibility still lies with United. Why on earth didn't it occur to one of their staff that the scare might just be related to the training they'd arranged for this company to run 3 days earlier?

I'm surprised there isn't any talk of a fine ..... and IMO there s a case for just awarding the game to Bournemouth.

Is it just mind-boggling incompetence of one of the world's biggest football clubs and the security lot? Do they not sweep the stadium before a game? Were the fake bombs not counted out and then back in? How did they keep the cleaners out of those toilets?

A cynic might suggest Man Utd may have benefitted from an hour or so delay, that a quickly identified hoax would have bought about, to see how their near neighbours were doing, just a bit of expensive bad luck the game was called off by the authorities. :p

Maybe they did think it was related, but you don't take a chance with something like that FFS. What did you want them to do, pick it up and shake it to see if anything rattled?

To be honest, as much as I'd like to see Man U sanctioned, it would set a bad precedent. Whatever the reason for the alert, I'm glad they put security over money and/or points. I'd hate to get blown up one day because the club whose stadium I was visiting was afraid of a sanction.

Quite right, I wouldn't been making the point if it was a genuine security incident. This was not when all is said and done, so as I say it is their fault, and failure to fulfil a fixture when it is in the power of the club to do so is a sanctioning event

From The Guardian comments:

Security Search Management & Solutions Ltd, a one horse organisation from Kent It has one listed Director of Christopher Philip Reid. Should United give them the bill for the replay no doubt they will just fold.

The guy used to work for G4S, so no surprises there!

This is 100% the responsibility of Man Utd and as such they should receive a massive fine. As someone mentioned earlier surely every club must carry out a complete sweep of a stadium before a match. Obviously this did not happen at Old Trafford which shows that they are putting thousands of lives at risk every time they host a game. Outrageous and they should be made an example of.

The Times today said that it would cost MU about £3m.
