Squad Rules/25 Man Rule

So following on from a post made by Egg on the Sam Gallagher thread,

 

There isn't much room for additions *unless* changes are made. 25 players max, including 8 home-grown (HG) or club-grown (CG), and excluding players who are 21 years old (U21) on or after 01/01/1996. Assuming there aren't any outgoings, which players would you leave off the registration list entirely (and thus condemn their season) in order to make the bare minimum of one or two additions.

In all seriousness, I did look at Gazzaniga and for the reason stated above couldn't see how he could count at club grown. Stephens I wasn't sure about, because he's been away on multiple loans and I couldn't be bothered to calculate it And it wasn't vital to the Premier League squad rules issue anyway Happy to be corrected, of course.

 

Oh, and reference Taylor, agreed, but the Q relates to our (my/your/etc) opinion of the players, not the board's.

Just seen on Footie Whispers (yeah, I know) Gazza is being linked with Spurs. Seems unlikely, but fingers crossed [emoji13]

Next season will also need careful planning. As things stand, we have 26 over 21s (includes Gazza and Reed). Next year Bednarek, Flannigan, Wood, Hesketh, Barnes and Seager from the current under 21 list will qualify as over 21s if they are still at the club by then with the same number out of contract: Taylor, Pied, Yoshida, Wood, Gardos and Flannigan.

The U21 list includes all the U21s out on loan (Lewis, Olomola, Seager) but the main list doesn't include loan players (Reed, Clasie, Gallagher) - simply because there is a number restriction on the main list but not for the U21s.

 

The U21 list omits 5 of the scholars: Enzo Robise, Kornelius Hansen, Kameron Ledwidge, Sean Brennan and Bailey Owen. This seems odd so there may be some qualifying condition I'm unaware of e.g. needs to have been registered with club by a certain date; or perhaps a rule relating to nationality (none of those omitted is English).

Indeed. I thought Alfie Jones was our best prospect at centre-back, and he's spent half the games seemingly playing defensive midfield to accommodate Bednarek.

Yes this looks right except that JWP is also club grown and I thought that Jack Stephens was club grown rather than home grown - though that’s academic as that distinction applies only for Europe and I have more chance of getting pregnant than we have of qualifying for Europe next season (I suppose theoretically we could win the FA Cup but that would require us to win matches on a scale we have not done for a very long time).

 

Goalkeeper Jack Rose is another home grown player who we included in our 25 man squad in September but may miss out in January if we sign enough players that we have to omit some we don’t need.

 

As for next season the additional u21s not mentioned already that will no longer qualify as u21s are Marcus Barnes, Ryan Seager, Jake Flannigan and Will Wood. That said Flannigan is out of contract this weekend and Wood is on trial at a club in south east Hampshire.

Really useful work, thanks. So with two gaps (forgetting the issues it may cause next season) I'd guess we'd be looking at (net) 1 forward and 1 centre back, though the management might decide our defence is good enough as is.

 

Wouldn't be surprised to see gabbi off with 2 forwards inbound.

 

Of course, would happily see other improvements, but doubt we'll be inundated with offers for anyone other than possibly Bertrand. And I'd rather we kept him!

Correct. Also, can anyone confirm if olomolas loan to y oval was only until January? Not premier league ready but might at least give a further option. Which will be needed if we sign any of Walcott, sturridge or balotelli as they'll be crooked or suspended most of the time!!

Technically correct, but in the real world the club has to manage players. They can't just say "sorry, son you're not playing", they are professional players being prevented from fully earning their living. They tend to loan them or move them on/terminate contracts. Bit different with the European rules where it is only a small number of games they are not available in.

You can. It works both ways. I am sure Gardos is quite happy picking up his PL wages for 6 months more knowing he isn't going to play because he has known for at least a year that he won't and has probably rejected taking a pay cut in order to go somewhere else and play. Likewise Jack Rose, a 4th or 5th choice keeper won't be expecting to even get on the bench in the PL so if he isn't named he won't be bothered.

 

No way will Gardos or Rose's feelings stop us from signing a player that we think might improve us.

For 25 man squad purposes Carrillo’s arrival has been cancelled out by Targett’s departure on loan for the rest of the season. We currently have 28 players who qualify as over 21 but 4 are out on loan for the rest of the season. So we can bring one more in without needing to omit anyone who not on loan from our 25 man squad

For 25 man squad purposes Carrillo’s arrival has been cancelled out by Targett’s departure on loan for the rest of the season. We currently have 28 players who qualify as over 21 but 4 are out on loan for the rest of the season. So we can bring one more in without needing to omit anyone who not on loan from our 25 man squad

So, if we sign Promes and a centre back and/or a keeper (looking unlikely but you never know) who would be omitted from the squad? I assume it would be out of Gardos, Taylor or Rose unless we were to sell or loan out Gabbiadini or Long. Anyone got any thoughts?

So no one will need to be omitted. In fact we will either have a vacant place or name one of the 4 loanees in the 25 (probably the former).

 

I'd expect the squad to be published on the PL website today but no decisions to make so not very interesting.

Confirmation of the updated squads. No surprise omissions in our 25 man squad - which, as expected, is a 24 man squad. Targett, Clasie, Gallagher and Reed are omitted because they are on loan.

 

The U21 squad lists all the U21s registered with the club, including those out on loan (Cook, Barnes, Seager and Lewis), apart from scholar Bailey Owen. No idea why he is omitted. It also lists Simon Kozak an U18 defender who isn't shown on the OS U18 profiles for some reason. Olomola is also missing from the OS profiles but is in the Premier League U21 list.
