Callum Mcfarlane leaving his job as U21 Head Coach to join Chelsea as U18 assistant, reuniting with Joe Shields.

Has done a top job at Saints but just shows how hard it is to compete with big clubs at youth level as on the face of it he has accepted a more junior role but in a powerhouse academy with huge investment.

(Can this thread be renamed to Saints Academy?)

Can you elaborate? McFarlane is doing a top job with our under 21s.

Alfie House has just said the replacement will be Key.  Can't find any details on him but will try and find out more.

Best bits video...

If only Rusk was still around! 😂

Getting annoying every time we have a bit of success/reputable backroom staff member, they get snapped up by one of the big six straight after.

Doing a decent job with the ECB. Surprised he wants the job change before the Ashes.

Does this mean we can look forward to Chelsea have a renewed interest in our academy players 😑

No more than before I wouldn't have thought as Joe Shields is already there and besides pretty much every u18 who is genuinely high potential gets taken by one of the big club academies already.

Very hard to keep a hyped player all the way through to a pro deal now.

Normally, Southampton's B team will come here to Valenciennes to face Valenciennes' B team.

I don't have the exact date yet, but I'll do what I can to be there and give you some information.

ER who T’ ECK is TONDA?   🤔

I see he has been Assistant Manager at Genoa for 4 years and before that at Barnsley for a year; before that Assistant Manager for academy or youth sides at Munich (1 year), Leipzig (2), Salszburg (1) and Cologne (3) since 2013.  He has worked with several decent managers.  Not bad for a 32 year-old.  Calum McFarlane has gone to an EPL club, apparently.

The German invasion continues.

Shame we're blessed with so many great strikers otherwise we could've given him a chance in our first team this season.... ;)

Yeah, good finish that. Wondering why he can't get in our first team squad 🙂

Overshadowed by the Ipswich match, but the under 21s won 2-1 away to Newcastle on Sunday with goals from Dipepa and Akachukwu.

From those of the older players / have been around the first team squad, the following were missing from the squad, so imagine some may be injured but others about to go out on loan?

Zach Awe, Nathanael Boot, Nico Lawrence, Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh, Dom Ballard, Victor Udoh.

Squad numbers are being used for the U21s this season for the first time - ones unique to the U21s and unrelated to the first team numbers.  There will be others but here are the ones who have played so far:

1         Dylan Moody

3         Max Fry

4         Jayden Moore

5         Tommy Dobson-Ventura

6         Abdulhalim Okonola

8         Moses Sesay

9       Baylee Dipepa (15 in earlier games)

10       Romeo Akachukwu

11       Nicholas Oyekunle

13       Khiani Shombe

14       Sam Tabares

16       Sufianu Sillah Dibaga

18       Aston Daley

19       Barnaby Williams

22       Cam Bragg

26       Will Armitage

28      Rory Whittaker

29       Sutura Kakay

30       Josh Jeffries

31       Dom Ballard

Is that a new competition request for PL2, or something Saints have chosen to do themselves?

Question for anyone who follows the u21s closely... Do we have anyone in the squad at the moment who is head and shoulders above everyone else and thus likely to be knocking on the door of the first team this season? In other words, do we have another Jay Robinson or Tyler Dibling in our midst?
