Spors and our scouts must have been busy watching the Euro Under 21 Championship in the summer. Jander, Jelert and Fellows all featured, although we would've been aware of Fellows already. I wonder if there were any other players who caught our eye

Issa Doumbia seems to be the next one

Sounds like we're looking at something like this for the season:

image.png.96ac683cc1a69255e388811658b4c4d7.png

I personally prefer having Jander/Downs as a more deep lying creative playmaker in a midfield 3, with Azaz pushing up to support the attackers (he was popping up everywhere vs Watford, finding the pockets and linking the play in the final 3). This approach would give us plenty of options, with movement from the attacking 4 players, and a 2man midfield that is very capable of anchoring the side and recycling play (all 3 of Jander/Downes/Charles are very good for this). I also wouldn't be too attacking with the full backs / wing backs - we are wide open time after time with them doing that - and frankly we need to be tighter - quite happy with them supporting the wingers from behind, but don't need to see them playing in the oppo half regularly or doing mental overlaps that leave us wide open to cross field diagonals and counter attacks.

Archer/AA offer mobile pacey strikers who can finish and get on the end of moves, and Downes/Stewart offer us a more physical mobile presence.

All in all, the squad seems more balanced now and I am pleased with the amount of players we've shifted. But i do also think there is still too much scar tissue and hesitation from the Martin era - and it is notable that its the likes of Stephens/Manning/THB (could still not be match fit i guess) that are the ones making basic errors and letting the opposition in time after time.

Too much to hope for that we sell one of them and get a top quality CB in? I accept we won't have a better keeper than Baz or Macca this year.

Wasn't expecting this move for him :

Bit weird that he has waited until the very last day. Honestly thought he'd decided to retire.

Presumably he has been training with someone.

Calling @Farmer Saint to the thread to explain this LOAN.... ;)

I said "unless we're desperate". The Wellington injury, now we know the extent, and with a couple of days left of the window, can be classed under this, don't you think?

What damage did Welington do and how long is he out for?

Morning, this feels more of end of the window option that became available and we decided to upgrade. He was previously linked to Everton, so presumably his agents were seeing if a PL move materialised

We'd have purchased if it was purely an upgrade. He may end up being better, but don't think this is a long term target, more a "he'll do" situation.

Think he was training with Leicester.

We still need someone to stop goals going in and someone to score them. And a strong CDM. Baz was hopeless for those two goals beaten across him from ridiculously tight angles, diving over the ball both times. We will lose more points because of him, just as we did when he was number one before. And up front we look weak, with Armstrong particularly looking like his running around ability is far better than scoring. I’m kind of hoping we lose Downes as his heart is clearly not in it and he is translating that into careless performances on the field and mystery illnesses. I also thought we could do with some muscle - Warford’s team had a bunch of big bullies who, well, bullied us. We are susceptible to that. So. Decent window so far but need more surgery.

Nice to see plucky Liverpool spending at least £150m on the transfer deadline day, only breaking the transfer record twice in one window 😂

But it's Everton and Aston Villa that are the problem 🤔

He may not have wanted a permanent in case we don't get promoted. It feels like a loan suits everyone with Wellington crocked.

Exactly.

This also isn't us loaning in essential players, like we did in the previous season.

So, with Ederson joining Fenerbahce today was this such a random post?

Its only not random if he actually comes to us and we aren't having 4 keepers in the squad.

Liverpool sell well, annoyingly, that's something they're good at - they may spend £450 million odd this summer but so far they've also recouped £200 million. They also didn't spend much at all last season, and they need to future proof for when Salah retires. And they lost Jota, though a morbid thought, I'm not sure if they get an insurance payout for him. I hate defending Liverpool but I actually think their business has been superb and they must be shoe ins for the Champions League - god help us all.

Agree with that, we've signed some decent players individually but we'll take a while to see if they have the right parts to make a decent team

This is my concern also. Looks like we've improved chance creation but if the stats are anything to go by we were already doing pretty well on that metric -finishing chances and not making mistakes leading to goals are the two things we need to improve and neither of these are going to be solved by bolstering our wide positions.

Ho hum. You never get all the ones you want.

Umm, newly promoted to League 1 team vs us. Might depend on whether the guy wants Premier League football and sees us as a better way to get it either directly or as a stepping stone like so many before him?

Bloody French !!

You do wonder why they'd bother making an offer if they haven't been given positive signals.

It's Paris Vs Southampton end of the day... 🫣

And Paris FC have got flashy ambitious owners (main shareholder is worth $150-200B, red bull also involved) and an exciting project. I don't think it's clear cut at all that we'll get him now.

Hmm, that’s a very non committal tweet - “considering”

I’m going bold and calling bullshit. Probably posturing when they were trying to sign Kone.

My challenge for Will is to put as many of the good new players we have into their known best positions - the positions in which they have done so well they they have come to Saints attention and we bought them.

Id be wary of attempting to “ convert” these new players to play other positions or ways of playing.

They are joining a team that fell well short last year. So, instead of asking the new ones to play like the players they are replacing I hope Will creates a structure in which the new players can flourish immediately.

How? By engineering it so they play in the same way - in the same spaces - or near as damn it - as they did for Brentford, Boro, WBA, etc. THAT is his biggest job imo. Don’t try to fix the new players - play them in their best positions and focus on fixing the old ones to adapt accordingly.

And if the old ones don’t or cannot adapt. Move them on.

Plenty of people on this board have chosen Southampton ahead of Paris.

Didn't someone suggest ellert was a wing back? I'm not sure we should be playing him as one if we don't have to.

I’m not quite sure Ryan is quite ready to be dropped after those two goals. Ditto Cameron. Will Still has already said if you want to stay in the team you have to score. Can’t see him dropping Manning after two excellent strikes then so Jellert will probably be bench for Portsmouth IMO.

🔵🚨🇫🇷 Paris FC is pushing for Léo Scienza!

🗣️ 1.FC Heidenheim 1846 has received a €10M offer from Paris. Advanced discussions. The deal could be concluded at €12M including bonuses.

🇧🇷 Scienza has always favored England but living in Paris appeals to him. Family discussions underway to validate the choice.

🏼 3-year contract.

He dropped Manning after the last time he scored. Pretty sure his quote about scoring largely referred to strikers.

Will be gutted if he goes to Paris. I really hope the prospect of playing for a team that could be in the Premier League next season appeals to him. His story and rise from obscurity is a great one, he is the German Jamie Vardy in respect to where he has come from!

Agreed. I think we still have a good chance given premier league football as a carrot.

It could also be noise to secure him a better contract offer etc. from saints ofc.
