That’s the correct approach. It’s indisputable that they’re the biggest & most influential group regardless of whether you personally like the music. It wasn’t always the case, in the 70’s The Stones, Who & Kinks were in the same bag. If you said “I think The Who are the greatest ever band”, it was a legitimate debate. Now, you can say “the who are my favourite band”, but you can’t say anyone other than The Beatles are the number one. Their music has aged so much better than other great acts and so many of the songs are still part of the culture. My grandson’s school choir sing “come together “ FFS. That’s the difference imo. The Stones had some great singles, Gimmie Shelter & Jumping jack flash areas good as anything Lennon & McCartney wrote, personally I think John Sebastian & Robbie Robertson wrote a couple up with them, McCartney himself has said “God only knows” is as good as anything he wrote. But it’s the number of tunes pretty much everybody knows that’s the difference, and the fact so many were just album tracks. I doubt many people can name non singles the who or Stones wrote, but that’s not the case with The Beatles. The aforementioned “Come together “ was just an album track, as was Yesterday, I saw her standing there, Back in the USSR, In my life, here comes the sun, there’s dozens of them. There’s also so many covers and young musicians are still covering them in bars and clubs now, 55 years after they split. The most remarkable thing is the timescale & age they were. 8 years was all the recording time was. The oldest, Ringo, was 29 & George was 26 when they split. It’s remarkable that so many years have passed and they’re still as popular as they are. People like what they like, but must acknowledge their achievements are way ahead of everyone else’s, by any measure other than personal preference. Edited 16 hours ago by Lord Duckhunter 2

The is of course subjectiveness to any taste but talent is on view for all to see. I could say a member of the Venga Boys is a better song writer than John Lennon or can write a better concerto than Mozart- there is clearly a right or wrong. Anyway no need to argue as you clearly know and love your music, and know I am right. Correct. You can hate the Beatles music but they very clearly are not shit. Bob Dylan's older stuff however is absolute crap.

As a spotty youth back in 1969/70 I was into what was called in those days hard or heavy rock; Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Groundhogs etc. By the mid 70’s I was thoroughly bored with the genre, sold all my albums and listened to other stuff. I was convinced that it would die a death soon. Fifty plus years later and “heavy” music is still a thing. Mind you, I thought that rap music was going to be a five minute wonder, so what do I know?

I "discovered" Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Status Quo, and many others through art lessons at KES, as the art teacher allowed us to bring in records to play during classes. Later, once in the lower 6th, we persuaded the Head to allow us to put a jukebox in the 6th form common room, which could be played at lunch time. That was stocked with punk and new wave singles. Pretty much, yes, although I catch up with some of it now on Planet Rock. Our 6th form common room was directly above the Headmaster’ office. The Upper 6th used to bring in albums by Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Nice etc. The noise must have driven him to distraction, but he never complained, bless him. (Ear plugs, probably).

I'm not a big fan of I am the walrus or all you need is love but the likes of yesterday or blackbird are beautiful songs even if some of their songs are of their time.

Undeniable that the Beatles have some shit songs but they also have a very large body of work and their best ones are right up there -albeit some are overplayed so they lose their shine a bit.
