Yes, it was  originally taken from the city crest but so were many other clubs' badges. You only have to look just down the road at Portsmouth to see that.

Incidentally, the badge represents the fact that men have always gone to war from this city. The red and white roses of Lancaster and York together showed that the English armies were united when they sailed from Southampton to France.

I’m not sure that the three roses was our original badge (although note you say traditional). I have seen images of a crest on the early sash and possibly quarters kit with more of the county emblem.

Not able to find an original photo, but here is a retro referencing it.

 

It does seem that the City crest superseded this one early on though, then dropped in 1974.

Good research on that and interesting.

But careful what you say about men going to war from here. It’s one of the bestest known facts that men have only ever gone to war from Portsmyth, the greatest wartime city in the history of mankind. Every single one of them went from Portsmyth for D-Day apart from a couple of insignificant rowing boats from elsewhere.

Only the bottom half of the first ever club badge was the shield with the 3 roses. "An oak panel in the boardroom at The Dell, saved for posterity in the new stadium,  reminds us of the club’s history and also displays the club’s first badge. It’s the shield and crest taken from the County Borough Council’s arms."

It was a bit random in the early years. In old nineteenth century team photos some players can be seen wearing the 3 roses badge, but others had no badge at all. I think it depended on whether they had someone to sew it on for them, but perhaps it was a bit like a cricketer getting their county cap. Then, of course, shirts without a badge became standard for many decades. You still saw players wearing the 3 rose badge on team blazers.

Yes, English armies set sail from Southampton for centuries, from Agincourt to the Falklands and beyond. Whilst it's true they have a naval base, considerably more soldiers have gone to war from Southampton than from Portsmouth.

There is indeed. It is just as well that they don’t add an appropriate smell to their paint. We have Elephant’s Breath on our kitchen table legs.

That's fairly standard to be honest, along with the "awaiting pickup by carrier" for several weeks that eventually results in the vendor telling you that the package has been lost in transit. 

 

Oh well, it's a small price to pay for getting a short at an equally small price  🤣

Seeing as the home shirt is predominantly red given the back, I suspect we'll wear that, possibly with the red alternate shorts that are on the online store.

One thing I like about all the kits is they’re all very simple and smart in their own way.

The second kit could be interesting because if it’s that one that’s been leaked that’s a big own goal there - they’re clearly more arsed about getting PR time rather than actual sales.

The crest on that Retro shirt refers to the County of Southampton (Southampton was the County Town of the County of Southampton (Hants) (usually referred to now as Hampshire). Southampton has only been a City since 1964, before then Southampton held the status of a county borough and was formally designated as the "town and county of the town of Southampton".

They’ll only charge what people are willing to pay. £45 is a ridiculous price for a tuna sandwich but if thousands of people were willing to pay it, I’d be out on Above Bar St. selling the buggers tomorrow morning.

Less and less people are prepared to pay it though, that’s the point. Hence why DH gate and countless others are doing a roaring trade these days.

If the official suppliers massively dropped their prices they'd probably make a lot more money in the long run.

Indeed. Dhgate knockoffs only exist because people aren’t willing to pay the prices clubs charge anymore. 

 

We’ve gone from £30-40 every 2 years to £60-100 every year in the last 15-20 years. 
 

£160 it cost me to get my 2 nippers the home kit and undoubtedly one of them will ask for either the away or third shirt at some point which would be another £160. 
Charging that much for kids is fucking ludicrous.

Clubs are clearly aware of that and have calculated that the sales lost to Chinese knockoffs don’t outweigh the profits from the higher prices they charge in the club shop. I haven’t bought a shirt full price for about 15 years now, I just wait for the end of season sales if I want one.
