HISTORIC EVENING At THE KING POWER

Hopefully this is considered worthy of a new thread. With help from Keith Fray who has digitalised all Southampton's results since 1885 in preperation of the forthcoming Official History book, I have checked to see if Saints have ever overturned a three goal deficit to win a competitive football match. The answer is never have we managed it - either home or away.

We have come back from being 3-0 down at home to draw 3-3 a few times, eg Liverpool (Pahars), West Ham (Paine) and Forest in the Cup (1963) but never won a three goal comeback and certainly not away. What is it about our manager? Never before have we scored 5 goals away in a either half of a game and yet we did it at Charlton under his stewardship.

Two records in one season.

Nice to make some positive records for a change! We need to use this as a springboard now to actually achieve something this season or all this will be is a trivia question in a few years.

What a brilliant come back. For the fans that attended it must be up there with the greatest away games ever? In recent times, Liverpool away in the League cup might push it close, but going from 3-0 at half time to winning 3-4 in the 96th minute must take some beating.

Has also reminded me of coming back from 3-0 down in a preseason friendly against Dnipro (then in USSR) in 89/90 to draw 3-3, with an absolute woofer of a goal from Jimmy Case.  Almost as good as Charles’s winner last night!

Certainly one of the most memorable games and results in my lifetime, I'll never forget this one.

Everything about it was great, but to win it with the last kick of the game just makes it even more special. There wasn't even time for us to panic about holding on!

It takes it for me. Prior to that I think it was Millwall away when Lambert scored the 2 late penalties for his hattrick to win it 3-2 from 2-1 down. We’d lumped some money on Lambert hattrick too. 
 

Last night was ridiculous. I feel weird about it, the away end was so angry about the first half performance, rightly so as it was pathetic. They were loudly booed off. I don’t think I’d have hung around long if Tonda didn’t make HT changes. Makes it even sweeter as we owed Leicester one for so many reasons, “Southampton, it’s happening again”. Numbers wise maybe only 800-1000 Saints there? Going from being full of regret at the wasted trip at HT to hurtling down the stairs for a 96th min winner at our end - stuff of dreams

Thanks for doing this. Tried to work it out this morning. Got back to 1959 and a game Shrewsbury but couldn’t get any further back!

Yep. I've watched an awful lot of Saints away games and not once seen us come back and win from 2-0 down. I missed the Preston game in 2008 and was gutted about that at the time. I go less often these days, so have to accept that I will probably miss these once in a lifetime experiences, but am envious of all that attended. I've always said that you have to experience the lows to truly appreciate the highs (To do that in 90 minutes of football is something special). Anyone that follows Saints has had plenty of lows over the last five years to prepare the way for this high. What a buzz it must have been driving home!

As Duncan has said, last nights result was history making and it must have been a fantastic experience for the band of hardy away supporters when Shea Charles scored the winner.
I cast my mind back to the 1963 FA Cup Replay game when, as a mid table 2nd Division club, the team was second best against 1st Division Nottm Forest, going 3-0 down, until what I thought was a consolation goal with about 12 minutes to go (no additional time played in those days).
However Saints were transformed and with a fantastic level of support (possibly one of the best ever at The Dell), a further two goals were scored.
Around 30,000+ fans then made their way to White Hart Lane for the second replay, where Saints put on one of the best team performances I can recollect to win comfortably 5-0 and earn the right to play Man Utd in the semi Final at Villa Park.

My favourite too though have to admit there's a bit of recency bias there. But I've never experienced anything remotely like those last ten minutes and am still in a state of shock/euphoria now.

Thought the away support was class too, whilst a lot of stick was given at HT it didn't really turn at all until the third went in, and everyone seemed bang up for it again pretty quickly when the second half started.

Was really trying to think of other top ones. Winning from behind at Spurs, winning at Old Trafford, few other unlikely wins here and there but there’s nothing that can compare to being that far out of a game then coming back to win it with the last kick. 
 

Agree, fans were quality last night despite the low numbers. There’s been such a disconnect between the fans and players in recent times but the fans got right behind them with the much needed triple substitution at HT. Players came out way more up for it, fans responded, players responded to that. When the Stewart goal went in it felt like we were right in the game despite still being 2 down, it felt like it was on.
