Seven Samurai - A mix of action, numerous character subplots and dealing with wider cultural changes. 
Le Diner de Cons - So funny that even the characters burst out laughing at what's going on.
Micmacs - Uplifting flights of fancy, built on sadness, heists, togtherness and the arms trade. Amelie also a great watch.
Quatermass and the Pit - A superb example of a multi layered plot, with Hammer production values. 
Aliens - Keeps a lot of the beats of the original, and as much as I like that one, I watch this one more.
Akira - A worthy, but not slaveish take on the manga. Lots of layers from political intrigue to evolution of our species.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - Oldman, Roth, lots of wordplay and physical comedy around a tragedy.
Metropolis - Years ahead of it's time. M is the better movie, but I've seen this more.

Not sure I catch your drift but There Will Be Blood bored the shit out of me. Each to their own though.

Keeping the positive aspect of the thread, Tom Cruise has done some decent films. Loved A few good men, and Days of Thunder is a great popcorn film.

Also forgot to mention that life affirming and pretty funny at times holocaust one, Life is Beautiful

Toy Story 5 is also excellent. Tarantino makes good films but is a knobhead

I've not seen 4 or 5, nor many of the other recent Pixar films. I used to love watching them all when my duaghter was young, so clever in that both kids and adults could take different things out of the films.

Yeah I had no excuse for Toy Story 5 - no grandkids yet but thought fuck it I used to enjoy these

Only actually got round to watching that quite recently, after reading QT making a prick of himself and slagging off Paul Dano's performance in it. I thought he was great TBH, as he is in everything I've seen him in. But yeah, DDL is just incredible.
