exit2 Posted 14 March, 2009 Share Posted 14 March, 2009 Well I usually do the next 5 games thread but as things are so tight, Im looking at the remaining 8 games. Blackpool Away Charlton Home Watford Away Wolves Away Palace Home Sheff Wed Away Burnley Home Forest Away Now looking at previous seasons in the CCC, it seems that at least 52 points is needed for saftey. So at present we need 13 points from 8 games. It is very achievable but my main concern is that a few of these games are more than 6 pointers! If we lose to the likes of Blackpool, Watford, Forest etc the gap is widening much quicker! Also looking these fixtures I really havent got a clue on what points we would get, Im totally stumped. So do you reckon we will get 13 points from these remaining games to reach the magical 52, or do you think the points needed this season for saftey are going to be higher

Bailey Posted 14 March, 2009 Share Posted 14 March, 2009 (edited) Didn't realise we only had three home games left, looks like we're going to have do it on the road. Might not be a bad thing in truth. We've hardly delivered at St Mary's all season and teams are more willing to come forward and have a go at us when we're away from home. This suits our style of play a lot more, as we tend to struggle to break the teams down (Derby and QPR at home) that play with five men across the middle. Pilchards Posted 15 March, 2009 Share Posted 15 March, 2009 When teams are fighting for there lives they will produce some amazing results. I personally think that 5 wins from the 8 will be our only hope. Too many times we are seeing teams get freak results where we can't seem to manage that at all, Wolves for one? It will be like Brum, Oh so close but NIL points yet again!
saint_bert Posted 15 March, 2009 Share Posted 15 March, 2009 I said before the Derby game when we had 20 points to play for we needed 16. that was with 5 home games. we have to win all our home games now and because of the two previous draws we now need two away wins. I cant see it happening now as we suddenly look like we have no goal threat. Its going to be a roller coaster ride one feels

Belgiansaint Posted 15 March, 2009 Share Posted 15 March, 2009 Just had a look at our relegation rivals' fixtures. Their run-in doesn't look comfortable either, especially next week. A Saints win in Blackpool combined with Brum, Wolves and Burnley wins over Norwich, Forest and Plymouth (theoretically very plausible) would constitute a huge motivational boost. Wonder if 49 or 50 points won't be enough, though Saints should aim for higher, of course. Are they capable of doing that? That's another kettle of fish, obviously. Gonna be a nail-biting finish to say the least.

SNSUN Posted 15 March, 2009 Share Posted 15 March, 2009 Put quite simply, we need 9 points from our next 3 games. Sounds impossible for Saints, but Blackpool, Charlton and Watford are the teams we need to beat in order to stay up. At a push, I reckon 2 wins and a draw would suffice. Any less and we'll be all but down by the last day.

rallyboy Posted 15 March, 2009 Share Posted 15 March, 2009 Let's just have a reality check for those who still can't see a problem... I have seen people going on about Watford and Derby - FORGET THEM, they are way up the road, and the same goes for Blackpool if we fail to beat them - a point will do them a treat. Barnsley are likely to scrape points from their two in hand so they could be out of touch, and Norwich have found form and are getting away. So, Forest and Plymouth are the targets, if by winning at Blackpool we involve more then great, but can people stop getting excited when teams seven points above us draw?! And as for us settling for draws at there next three, forget it WE MUST WIN if we are to mount a serious escape bid. Forget the blinkered ''oooh, we are still mathematically capable of surviving, we just have to miraculously produce the best run of form since 1894'' etc. GET REAL, the table doesn't lie, we are down there because we are that poor and things must change. Plymouth, one below them in 19th are only 4 points ahead, played a game more, so with 8 games left they will see themselves are not safe at all. Their current form is worse as well. lenwilkins Posted 15 March, 2009 Share Posted 15 March, 2009 13 points from 8 games. 4wins and a draw from 8 games. Have we achieved anything remotely like that at any stage this season? I suspect not. IMHO we're down. (Of course had we kept Pearson and not embarked on the completely lunatic Dutch total football scheme inspired by the equally clueless Lowe and Wilde which has reduced this football club to a shambles it might have been a different story.) Thats the key fact - 4 wins and a draw from 8 games when we cannot score against poor opposition. Unfortunately the writing was on the wall several months ago...Wotte putting two up front helped, but he still persists with the diamond at home and THAT limits the teams ability to dominate the midfield and get good balls to feet in attack. We are down people. That could also mean administration and if Lowe tries to hold on this season that could mean a very rough ride in league one, in turn leading to TWO seasons (or more) in that league. The next 8 games are probably the most important in the recent history of the club and yet look at who is in custody at this most important time...it ain't looking too good is it? St Marco Posted 15 March, 2009 Share Posted 15 March, 2009 Have to agree with the above. We have to go above and beyond any form we have probably had in our entire time in the CCC to stay up. The last 2 match days teams around us have slipped up and we failed to take advantage of it. I worry that we could be about to go through another poor form period like before xmas when we had 5 games and nobody around us was winning either. You have to take those chances. If you look at the table only us and Charlton have been in the bottom three for most of the season. The last spot has been passed about by a few teams Watford,Barnsley,Forest,Doncaster,Derby,Norwich etc all those teams have hauled their ass out of there apart from Barnsley, who have 2 games in hand to play. So we need to now go on a big run. If we are playing for draws like the last 3 games seem then that might not be enough, what worries me is if we fall a goal behind can we change our system to get that goal back? 8 games left and we have to say we would need 50% wins at bare minimum from those games. The next game is massive, we lose and Blackpool stay up as they will be 10 points clear of us. If we get 3 points from the next 3 games even if they are all draws then i think with 5 games left we would need a miracle.

We might be away, btu Blackpool aren't too clever and those around us have tough games!!!! Next week: Barnsley away at Derby (not easy) but have agame at home v Palace midweek Forest home to Wolves (toughie) Norwich are away at Birmingham (toughie) Plymouth home to Burnley (hard game) Following week is interesting as someone has to drop points: Barnsely v Forest Blackpool v Plymouth Norwich v Sheff Weds Still think it will go to the wire.
