Just a random (I'm bored thread) one:

For me, Franny at Wimbledon, uplifting Fash 20 foot in the air, pure class!

Mine too. I spoke to Franny in a nightclub a few weeks later and complimented him on that 'tackle' and asked him about it. He told me that after he was dismissed he was sat alone in the dressing room feeling gutted that he had let his teammates down and all he could hear was the Saints fans singing his name (for the first time), real mixed emotions, for although he is now regarded as a legend, up untill this tackle he used to get a lot of shti from a large number of our supporters, not for his efforts but for his shocking distribution.

You're right - he got loads of **** for years. Always groans when he was announced. He was shocking at times though.

I'd go for two already mentioned - Ruddock and Benali. There was something stupid like 9000 at the Notts County game - bad Branfoot.

One of my all time favourites is actually the thread title

1976 .. Fulham Allstars (BEST, Moore, Marsh. etc ) come to a struggling Southampton in the come down period after winning the FA CUP, well actually just our normal p!ss poor start to the season (P7 W0 D3 L4) and a week after getting dicked at Charlton 6-2, and with The (we love all London Teams) Big Match TV cameras there ready to record the match for viewing the next day, we totally p"ssed all over them and Georgie porgy puddin 'n ' pie spat the dummy big time and got sent off. (remember in those days GBH was the absolute minimal crime for a Red Card ;))

The arrival of Super (TED) Macdougall helped inspire us to negate the 6-2 defeat 2 weeks earlier with one of our own 6 - 2 at Wolves (who went up as champs with what would have been the best defensive record in the league if we had' stuck 6 past 'em ;))

In the space of less than 2 weeks we had been involved in 3 games producing 17 goals but Best's sending off still brings miles to my face :p

My favourite was 'us' getting Mark Viduka sent off, the fans were in fine voice at St Marys "He's just a fat Ozzie w$nker, fat ozzzziee waaaaaaaaanker" which got said fat ozzie very riled up, so much so that he ran around throwing himself into takles making us sing louder until he got himself sent off !

Favourite sending off would have to be Campbell for bringing down Tinman in 2002. Beatts scored the resultant penalty, Tinman scored with his todger and we won 3-2.

A close second would be Diomansy Kamara tripping over his own feet for Pompey in the cup. Lying on the floor he picked up the ball, expecting a free kick and the ref gave him a second yellow for deliberate hand ball. What a spanner.

Favourite Saints sending off would have to be Tahar breaking Dyer in half.

Back in the early Seventies remember Channon getting sent off home to Coventry, as a young kid I remember being mortified that my hero had been sent off,(always seemed defenders in those days) But then it turned out to be good as the whole mood changed inside The Dell....the atmosphere really lifted and the poor ref that day got so much stick and had to run the gaunlet from the west stand and a small pocket of milton roaders who headed to the corner by the tunnel. This was in the days of "The referee is a ******"

Ruddock againts County must be the best followed by Mark Dennis against Villa put the Villa player into the west stand.

Though not Saints the scrap between Norman Hunter and Francis Lee in the 70's must be the best, after they were both sent off they continued trade punches all the way to the tunnel

Definately Tahar smashing into Dyer and ruining his World Cup chances.

This one certainly seems to be a popular choice, and quite rightly so.

I remember that he had recently signed a 3 year contract with Newcastle, and then had the audacity to say he was thinking about taking Tahar to court as, by not appearing in the World Cup his value on the transfer market would suffer . What a selfish c*ck. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving knobhead.

Surprised Roy Keanes dismissal in the 6 - 3 "can we play you every week" match hasn't cropped up yet. :D

Ossie against that t0sser John Bailey...didn't even bother waiting for the ref.

Bailey had earlier got Steve Williams sent off .....funnily enough Bailey hardly ever played at The Dell after that but when he did boy did he get both barrells from the West/East/Milton stands.

I still laugh at the time Leonardo got sent off playing for Brazil v USA in the 1994 World Cup. It was one of the most blatant sending offs I can remember as he deliberately elbowed one of the USA players but Kevin Keegan who was co commentating on the game was adamant that he was "unlucky". I never was sure what he thought happened as it clearly something other than everyone else saw.Unfortunately I can't find footage including the Keegan commentary but the sending off is 2 minutes into this clip. Red card or not !?

George Best at the Dell,October 1976.I seem to remember Angie, his missus behind the Archers Rd goal, taking pictures, wearing thigh high leather boots........or was that just a fantasy?

No you are spot on about Angie Best btw. Have to agree it was the 'best' sending off ever.

Can't remember any of the player names but it was the first time Cameroon played in the world cup. They were up against Argentina and decided on an aggressive approach. some Argentine Winger was flying down the touch line and three cameroon players took it in turns to make horrific flying tackles on him, he dodged the first two but the last guy absolutely polaxed him and took an instant red.

My all time favourite, too. I seem to remember that Fashanu was being ultra-aggressive that day, alternately leading with his elbow and diving on the ground at the nearest touch back. Then he absolutely flattened one of our younger players (can't remember who) quite deliberately, so the next time Fashanu had the ball, down near the corner flag, Franny just went after time. After a good thirty yard run up he launched himself at Fashanu, taking him out with a flying scissorkick tackle, around waist height, sending the big ugly oaf flying up into the air. Before he'd barely landed, Franny had already picked himself up and began walking off towards the tunnel, with the ref waddling after him. Moments like that are what make legends.

my favourite is Cameroon against Argentina where two or three lunges in succession ended with Benjamin Massing connecting good and proper with Canniga going down the right wing. (see youtube)

You could see it coming and the final impact didn't disappoint!

You would get jailed for that now.

It was in 1990 and Cameroon won 1-0 and qualified for the QF's where they lost to England. This is the incident !

Yup, for hacking down Dion Dublin wasn't it - because he was about a yard beyond the last defender (and it definitely wasn't going to count).

Blimey was that 10 years ago ?

Favourite sending off...? Probably Tahar on Dyer. My Fantasy Football team name the following season was "Tahar Shot J.R." after the media outcry and Dyer's pathetic World Cup legal challenge whining.

Least favourite ? Peter Crouch at Crystal Palace in the Prem relegation season ruling him out for the last game. Prutton comes close, the d1ck.

My all-time favourite sending-off is from April 2003 when we beat Leeds. We'd won the FA Cup semi-final the week before, I think, and you could have been forgiven for thinking that our boys were going to take it easy for the last few games to make sure they made Cardiff. Not a bit of it. We won 3-2 and Peter Reid, Leeds' boss at the time, admitted that they had been hoplessly outplayed and the scoreline was ridiculously flattering. Anders Svensson scored our third, one of my favourite ever Saints goals as it started from a Leeds corner and a sweeping break from us ended with Anders thrashing the ball past Robinson having run 80 yards from his own penalty area to support James Beattie. It triggered something in Alan Smith's brain too, as he mowed into Killer and got the red card he'd been heading for the whole game, and the crowd let him know it as he flounced off. I always did hate Smith. Second favourite would be Alan Thompson, another Leeds player, when we beat them in the play-off season at home. Leeds were phenomenally dirty that day and should have had at least three sent off. We battered them for the remainder of the game and it was inevitable that we would score a late goal and win.

anyone remember Dennis Hollywood getting sent off when Mike Sumerbee nutted him.Summerbee carried off on a stretcher and poor old dennis sent off and he had done nothing wrong----------------------that time

Before my time but remember being told about it. A player had to commit GBH to get sent off in those days, common assault didn't even justify a booking.

Several years ago playing Blackburn, Michael Svensson appeared to have a swing at Andy Cole, loads of players got involved and eventually Cole got sent off and no one else even got booked. Think Souness and Rofe had a barney for good measure in the tunnel.

Dion Dublin at home to Villa in 2001 when we just moved to St Marys and I think game was also on sky. Dublin didn’t even make much contact if any when he slapped Tahar round the face who then went on to roll around on the floor like he’d been shot LOL

I think Delap got sent off in same game? And we lost 3-1

I like your criticism of LWT's Big Match coverage of London teams. London Weekend Television's coverage.

It did that for at least one other Villa game in the early 90s - I never saw Dennis play for Saints but I did have a £250 leather jacket (18th birthday gift) completely ruined by a 90 minute torrent... it went mouldy.

For some reason I also got Nigel Kennedy's autograph on the match programme one season too...

I was only 11 but I remember that like it was yesterday, I had argentina down to win 4-0 on the wall chart score predictor and the Cameroon players came out like it was UFC rather than the world cup finals. that wasn't the only incident in what I remember being one of the dirtiest games I've ever had the pleasure to watch.

1960: George O'Brien about 5'-8" fouled by Harry Harris (Newport County) later played many games at Centre Half for Pompey.

Without a word George hit him with a right cross that pole axed him and left him unconscious for some time.

In 55 years it is the only time I've ever seen a footballer actually land a proper punch. The neatest thing I've ever seen.
