Where were you when we signed Keegan?

I was at Titchfield Junior school, my dad was one of quite a few who told us at the gates at home time. Keegan then came and opened the carnival that year. My dad got his autograph for me as he was the village bobby and had to escort KK around! I was so proud I took it to school to show everyone. Even written on police issue handbook paper.

I was working in the claims office at CIS, when I got phone calls from my mum and then a cousin, who had both heard it on Solent. At the time I played cricket for the same club as Graham Baker and when I got to a comittee meeting that night, I was informed Keegan had asked Graham to get him some games the next summer and I was the captain.

Told everyone I knew (and some I didn't) for the next few days before finding out it was a wind-up.

Every Saints fan old enough remembers where they were when news came through in1980 that Lawrie had signed Keegan at The Potters Heron. Keegan at the time was European footballer of the year.

I was working with my brothers on a roof in Olivers Battery. We couldn't believe it so went home early to see it for real on the news. What happened over the next couple of years was the most exciting football I've witnessed as a lifelong Saints fan.

Where were you when it was announced and is the next few days destined for the same?

I was 4 years old and living in Oliver's Battery Road South at the time!

I was skiing in Italy and a group of older lads from Luton or Watford (who knew I was a Saints fan) mentioned the news to me as we were in the lift going up the mountain. I semi knew it wasn't a wind up as they werent that type altho it was v hard to believe.

I never came down a mountain that fast ever again and then began the search for a paper. As said earlier no mobiles in those days.

Had to wait until the following day when I could get hold of a day old Daily Mail

Also remember going to the Guidhall when KK was presented. There was a journo on stage (from the Express? boyfriend of Lillian Board the athlete?) who said ..'this will be the first of many.. Didnt quite work out that way but LM did manage to sign a lot of big names

KK was a v good player and his disallowed volley from the corner of the box (can't remember who against) was one of the best techical efforts i have ever seen.

Disallowed at the time for offside against someone else. would definately have counted under todays rules

Don't remember exactly where - just remember it meant there were more saints supporters at school on IOW than Liverpool and how my home and away patrick kits were my pride and joy

If this is true please let's have a retro patrick kit next year!

I was at school and when i got home my Mum said "your father's got something to tell you" in a very matter of fact way. "oh ****", i thought, then he walked into the kitchen and said with a big smile "you will NEVER guess who Southampton have signed ! "

well i may have been 13 but i nearly wet myself.

If he becomes our manager at the age of 42 I may wet myself again : - )

I was trying to work out how old i must of been when hearing the news so you have made it easier for me.

Yep got home from school and my dad and 2 brothers (all spurs supporters) was sitting there watching the news when I came in and saw it for myself.

Staggering as you would only dream that the greatest english footballer at the time was coming to your club.

I remember feeling rather pleased and smug when the Head Master mentioned it mind you !!!

I was a pilot flying Heralds from the Airport and had just landed and got out of the the aeroplane going into the office and saw him come in on a private plane from Hamburg.

It was all over the airport in minutes that he was signing for us and off for a news conference. I just didn't believe it but it was true. In those days customs, immigration and S/B saw everybody coming in especially in private planes. Everybody was on first name terms so we got the message very quickly.

When I got home it was all over the tv news.

I was at the Guildhall Forum ( a proper forum!). Steve Curry , Daily Express Football Writer, was Chairman with LM, Jack Charlton and Dennis Law answering questions from the audience. KK was introduced during the evening and the place went balistic.

At school, and the remember our teacher telling us he had signed. I remember running home to ask my step dad. Sat glued to the tv that night watching the news. The next day I remember playing footy on the school pitch and evryone was KK. It was a real buzz.

Spoke to my step dad not so long ago, who said a signing like Keegan then would be like be like signing Ronaldo now which to be fair is true.

l remember school assembly about it being announced. This should put it into perspective for younger fans - it was huge!

By the bus-stop on the corner of Landseer Rd & Butts Rd when some random bloke shouted "we've signed kevin keegan" from his car. We didn't believe him, but being 9 years old in a way it was like "so what, we're the best team in the country, why wouldn't he want to play for us?"

As to the offside volley it was Armstrong who was offside, for those who haven't seen it it was similar to Van Basten's in Euro '88 or Beatts against Leicester. Wonder if its on Youtube?

Recently stayed at the Potters Heron, renovated now but the rooms are the same. Not sure the missus understood quite why I was so keen to stay there :)

I was at Springhill School, right opposite the Dell, and we all rushed to the gates to get a look at the great man. There's a clip that sometimes shows up on clips shows of the whole school piling around the fence and waving at Keegan etc. Emod Flynn ran out and got a hair off his head!

I was in my first year at university, living in hall. A mate across the corridor (who had very little interest in football) told me that Saints had just signed Keegan. I think I told him to f*ck off. I did apologise when I heard it was true though...

I was walking back from school (secondary) with a mate - as I got to our gate and said goodbye to my mate, my mum came out and said "Have you heard, Saints have signed Kevin Keegan!". Took me a while to believe her, but remember me and my mate just jumping around in the street like, well, delighted schoolboys!

Oh happy day. There was nothing like it.

Managed to pull a sicky from school and heard the Radio Solent announcement live.

The ran up to school at the end of the day to make sure everyone knew about it.

The next 2 1/2 years was a Patrick haze!!!!!!!!!

Tell me about it! Me and my best mate had both full Saints kits (the classy red/white, blue/blue - still my favourite 'alternate' kits - perhaps we should bring back if the KK rumour is true!), Patrick trainers and the blue/red 'shiny' track-suit. Always remember thinking it was so cool we had "Rank Xerox" as our sponsor too - right up there with the big boys.

And you forget how slick the build up was too - but that team was just a well-oiled machine, bursting with talent, such a shame that we never quite clinched a championship, it was definitely within reach.

In the wilds of North Hampshire 2 miles from Aldermaston everything over the news wires was screened for national security so the news did not get to me until after school, when I got in the house from school the phone was ringing it was my Liverpool mad mate "you are never going to believe who Saints have signed!", before I could guess he blurted out Kevin Keegan!!! I thought he was on a wind up............................ "Switch on Newsround and see for yourself if you don't believe me!!" Straight away on Newsround there it was John Craven saying the words as a Saints fan you never in your wildest dreams ever thought you would hear.

I supported the team that had just signed the most famous player in the World: phenomenal.

The next day our tight little gang of Saints fans were the centre of attention at School.

He was just the tip of the iceburg to what was about to come our way with regard to players we signed, what great days they were even 30 odd years on they are permanently burned onto the hard drive between my ears!

At work. I was told by an eternally p!ss taking workmate, who had no interest in football. As usual, I thought he was on a wind-up, and even when he protested his honesty, I just laughed it off. Got home and it was a headline on the BBC national news. People today don't appreciate that KK was the biggest media footballer in the northern hemisphere [and that kind of meant the whole world anyway] at the time.

I'd just about scraped my jaw off the floor by the next morning to apologise to my mate. Overnight, Saints went from just being one of the top league's number to one of the glamour clubs. It was the greatest masterstroke in so many masterstrokes performed by Lawrie Mcmenemy.

I was at work as an apprentice when one of the lads in the tool room Pete strolled over about 3.0pm & casually said You've Signed Keegan. To which I remember replying F**K off your taking the P**s, Refused to believe it until I got home & heard it on Solent news. Cant describe the feeling, what an immense signing as I think he was European player of the year at the time. And the way Lawrie Mac played that press conference, & then unveiled KK fantastic memories.

Sad It ended the way it did, kind of make's me a bit cautious about him & not so trusting of the man, would be happy if he were to come as a director of football, but not convinced about him as our next manager.

I was 10, been a Saints fan for 1 year, a football fan for about as long, I was distinctly underwhelmed as I'd never seen Keegan play, found it hard to believe that someone could be a better footballer than those already wearing the red and white stripes, when I did get to see him play he still didn't seem as good as Golac or Channon, Holmes, Williams etc. Just another cog in a great team. Only years later did I realise what a coup it must have been. I lived in London and was told by my dad (the only other Southampton fan I knew) who never rated Keegan anyway, called him a clockwork mouse. So it didn't seem that big a deal. Great times though!!!!

Yeah, people forget - it really was like us signing Beckham in his pomp; European Footballer of the Year. I remember reading a match previews and them regularly saying "The Southampton Bandwagon comes to town" (wherever we were playing), such was our 'star power'. Incredible days.

I had pulled a sickie from school that day and was in my bedroom. I didn't believe my dad when he shouted the news up the stairs but, when it eventually sank in, I was jumping up and down on my bed with joy. Needless to say: my unsickliness was rumbled and I was back to school the next day!

I had just moved to Stoke.

We supplied Stoke City with dressings and medication.

The Stoke City physio came in and told me, I thought he was taking the ****. A few minutes the beat copper came for a cup of tea and told me.

The stoke lads were truly jealous and couldn't beleive it.

(They were good blokes tho, Stoke City are still my second team)

I heard the news from the lollipop man coming out of junior school in Portchester. Ran all the way home to listen to the news to see if it was really true. As I was a liverpool fan at the time (young & impressionable ;)) & KK was my fav player, I asked my Dad for season tickets at the Dell. He duly obliged with 2 tickets in the front row of the east stand bench seats & was converted to the Saints fan I am today

Happy days
