Pompey Takeover Saga

It is interesting that the only other time I have heard about a South African consortium buying a Football Club was about 15 months ago.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/portsmouth/3439882/Tony-Adams-afraid-of-the-sack-if-Portsmouth-sold-Football.html

"South African tycoon Greg James, chief executive of Central Rand Gold, one of South Africa's leading gold mining companies, was believed to be in talks about buying the club".

or http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/portsmouth/article5134440.ece

And then there is nothing for over a year, no other interest in any other club, which MOST PEOPLE think would give BETTER value for money.

I stand by what i wrote on Friday http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=619289#post619289

IMO "Daddy" name will be linked somewhere, the land around Farton Dump just does not make the deal work.

Chainrai makes Pompey promise

Portsmouth, 10:28, February 22, 2010

Portsmouth chairman Balram Chainrai has promised to find a way to save the club even if he can't find a new owner.

Pompey have just a few weeks to find a way of avoiding a winding up order from the HM Revenue and Customs over an unpaid tax bill.

Chainrai, who took charge at Fratton Park at the beginning of the month, has promised the club's fans he will save Pompey from going out of business.

Spokesman Phil Hall said: "He absolutely pledges that he will not do business unless people have the funds and, if he can't find investment, he will find a way of saving the club himself,

"He will bring his business contacts into play and he says categorically the club will not close and its history will continue into the future."

I see that Phil Hall has been chosen as Chinrai's mouthpiece.

Hall was employed by the Skates when Harry returned as their media relations man and was reported to have put preasure on his former Fleet Street chums to kill any stories that would hurt the Skates (Harry ... Storrie ... Brown Envelopes ... Agents ... Gaydmark Familly etc )

Perhaps someone can email them the link to this thread?

They clearly don't do a great deal of work in that office, as there has been at least 3 links to an Arabian news site where SAF states he is taking advice on whether to invest more in the company or do a runner as fast as possible and ditch his shares.

What comes as a surprise to them comes as old news to us, but it's been that way since the beginning of this thread :)

He also says that the club have a few weeks to find a way of avoiding the winding up order, when in fact they have only 4 and a half working days :D

There was an interesting comment in the Times report that btw posted earlier

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/article7035570.ece

Chainrai has taken over the freehold of Fratton Park in exchange for writing off £10 million of the debt, although he stands to get back more by leasing the ground back to the club at an annual rent of £1 million and could make a bigger profit if the club go out of business.

Has someone finally twigged what the endgame will be?

Resignation letter. Playing the 'don't sue me, no one told me anything, and if they did I could not check it' card

Shall we call it his 'Dear Peter' letter from now on?

he's jumping ship, clearly doesn't want to be known to be involved with them anymore - which seems to have been initiated by reading the SOA (which i guess actually does demonstrate that they are insolvent)

Skates seem to think this is a good thing, as it means the takeover will now go through....not sure i get their logic, if anything this sounds more alarm bells as to the future of this club.

A fully built 100,000 sq ft supermarket would cost £20m tops. Buts thats not what they have, They only have the land.

Plus a quick look sees that Tesco , Asda and Sainsburys already have stores in the area.

There is already an Aldi. However, there is only a mini Tesco (on Goldsmith avenue) down that neck of the woods. Fratton Park itself can not be knocked down and replaced by a supermarket. It must be used for recreational use. The land next to it (car park etc) is a different matter. I'm not sure if that land adds up to 100,000 sq ft though.
