High Profile players.

When Pimpey had their success in the Championship they had a couple of high profile players that were coming to the end of their career in Sherringham and Merson.

Are there any of those sort of players still around that could do a similar job for us?

Dave, have a look at my post on the director of football thread along the same lines. See what you think. I'm sure there are a few that cover that.

That's exactly what Lawrie Mac did, mostly successfully.

...and Berger...and Stone...can't really think of too many players of that calibre gettable right now but how we'd all love another Casey or Ball...

Has there been anymore news on Stern John?

Much rather have him than Rasiak. Not so sure about Euell, don't really know where he'd fit in if we had John, Rasiak, Paterson here.

John is on trial at palace i think, warnock is apparently very keen.

I'm not even sure Euell is at the club anymore? I'm sure he's been released, and is now looking for a new club.

Sheringham and Berger didn't play for the skates in the CCC. De Zeeuw, Foxe, Hislop, Festa, Merson, Stone and Sherwood were the senior signings.

If you are going to be successful though you need good youngsers as well and they signed League 1's best player in Matty Taylor. We need to be be buying one or two of League 1 and 2's best players if we are serious about promotion.

Is Marian Pahars still playing?

According to wikipedia, yes, and I'll tell you what: I bet he'd absolutely love to come back to Saints.

Matt Oakley also seems a good and realistic suggestion. I think the person who mentioned Ryan Giggs is being ever so slightly optimistic though!

Even Pahars as a back up or a bench player would be interesting, Can we go find Ronnie Ekelund too seeing we are digging up old players

Just found this on wiki

During the 2005-06 season, Ekelund offered his experience to Southampton as a coaching staff member unsuccessfully. He joined the coaching staff of the Earthquakes in 2008 as Technical Advisor.

Did he?

The trick is to have a satchel face type manager who can sweet talk higher league players to join your little revaluation, and also have an owner(Alla mad Mandy) willing to gamble paying them top wages,,,,,That is the fast track way back to the promised land, Not cheep But affective.

Yes

Lee Trundle

Glen Little

Chris Lucketti

David Unsworth

Matt Oakley

Dean Windass

Kevin Phillips

Henrik Larsson

Sol Campbell

Nick Barmby

Ryan Giggs

I'm sorry but most of them won't join right now in league one, and mentioning Philips,Giggs, Cambell, Larsson! is complete fantasy, as for Lucketti and Unsworth and Windass they're likely possibilities.

Yes

Lee Trundle- Contracted to Bristol City until 2010

Glen Little- Free agent, training with Reading

Chris Lucketti- Huddlesfield, contract until 2010

David Unsworth - Retired

Matt Oakley- Leicester, unsure on contract status

Dean Windass- Joined Darlington on Player/Coach role

Kevin Phillips- Birmingham till 2010, after what he said about us? Not sure he'd come back

Henrik Larsson- Helsingbourg, rumoured to be retiring after Swedish season finishes

Sol Campbell- Free agent. Villa, Hull and other English clubs interested.

Nick Barmby- Hull until 2011.

Ryan Giggs- Man United until 2011

Sorted it out for you.

Phillips, Giggs, Campbell, Larson... why not throw Raul, van Nistelrooy, Scholes and Nedved in the mix as well?

Seriously though, I'm sure there are some experienced campaigners who would do a great job for us and hopefully bring out the best in the likes of Lallana, Gillet, James, Mills etc... Instead of the big-name, ex-premier league players Pompey went for I think I'd rather go for a few players with experience of what it takes to get out of these divisions. People in the Chris Marsden mould who have been solid journeymen for most of their career and would see Southampton not as a final big pay day, but a swansong and an opportunity to play a part in an exciting project of which they've never been involved in before.

That would be more attractive to me at this stage.

XI players who show the same pride our goalkeeper shows in wearing the shirt. Thats what will get us out of this division.

I kinda agree with you, football is all about chance. You look what happened to Leicester back in 07/08....Mad Mandy tried it again with large pot of money and they dropped down to League One, you just got to be clever and pick up the right players.

We (Pompey) went up with a better team than we have now in my opinion.

Yakubu, Hislop, Festa, De Zoo (sp I know), Todorov, Foxe, Sherwood, Stone, Merson, Linvoy, Quashie (!)...

F*ck me, I forgot Festa......you had a good team for the league, and, I hate to say it, you also had a very good man manager.

Most fun I've had watching Pompey it has to be said (over a season anyway).

Yup good manager, but a great owner, how much do you think that little lot was setting us back in wages pa? Remember there was no TV money to speak of after the ITV Digital debacle. It wasn't Redknapp writing the wage cheques that's for sure!

I've been saying that we should sign Lee Trundle for years on the HCDAJFU threads on these forums, can't think of a better time to sign him than now! He's been a little iffy at Bristol City, but he was a goal machine at this level at Swansea, and he's hardly over the hill at 32. Could provide some good experience up front with a younger player like Patterson playing alongside him.

Would also like to see us get Matt Oakley back in, he loves the club and he's one of my cult heroes because he took the time to write back to one of the childish letters I sent to various players at the club yonks ago, and he could still definately do a job for us in the middle of the park.

After what happened with Skacel, perhaps a high profile signing isn't wise. We'd only get muppets on here moaning that they are over rated, over paid, we should never have signed them and stayed with Paul Wotton instead.

This approach hardly started with the blue crap, its what Lawrie did.

I still think its a valid approach.

Is Marian Pahars still playing?

Marians Pahars: It's Nice to be back but I still miss England

Striker Marians Pahars has rediscovered his passion for football after returning to Latvia to play for Skonto FC, but admits that he has pangs for the Premier League, telling uefa.com: "Of course, I miss England."

Cult celebrity

Now 32, the 75-times capped Pahars has every right to be called a living legend in Latvian football, as one of the stars of the side that qualified for UEFA EURO 2004™ under Aleksandrs Starkovs. However, the last few seasons have been unkind to the striker, who had enjoyed cult celebrity in England with Southampton FC before injuries set in.

Injury ravages

Having left Skonto for Southampton in 1998, Pahars got the chance to play in the English top division for several years, prior to the Saints' relegation in 2005. He scored 43 goals in 137 league games for the club, but injuries ruined his later seasons, prompting him to join Anorthosis Famagusta FC in 2006 and then return to Skonto this year.

War wounds

"Of course, I miss England," Pahars told uefa.com. "It's really hard to explain what you feel when playing in England. It's a pity my career won't end the way it could have; all those injuries. Every player has new injuries after 30, and those injuries are bothering me now. The old ones? I am used to them, so I don't even pay attention to those pains."

'Nice to be back'

While other players might have been tempted to give up, Pahars has enjoyed returning home, and has scored eight goals in 16 league games in 2008. "Skonto will be my last club," he said. "I am really happy to be playing football every week and doing this at home. I started my career in the Latvian league, and it is nice to be back."

Changing times

When Pahars left, Skonto were midway through their European record 14-year run of domestic titles, but they have not taken the crown since 2004, and are four points behind reigning champions FK Ventspils in the race for this season's honours. "Skonto are not favourites anymore, like in the old days," conceded Pahars.

Same feeling

"In every match you have to give 100 per cent, but even that doesn't guarantee us a victory," he added, noting how competitive the league has become. "I like playing here and feel the same emotion as ten years ago. I have bags of experience but I'm still nervous before the first whistle. I would have already quit if that feeling had gone away."

Long view

Whether he will go into coaching after he retires is a question that Pahars is still pondering, though he conceded that he "cannot imagine not being involved in football". For the moment, he is just enjoying his game. "Right now, I want to play next season as well," he said. "We'll see. But I'm just happy to be enjoying my football again."

Paolo Maldini?! Ryan Giggs? Paul Scholes?! Even if we were in the Premiership I doubt we'd tempt any of them!!! Realistic ones are more like those recently released or available ex premier league stars (in the loosest sense) Dwight Yorke, Danny Mills etc
