MLT - Footballs Greatest Penalty King

This was as easy as it could be to pick the number one, indisputable. Anybody who didn't have him in that slot couldn't really be considered to be an expert.

You could also ask yourself who is the greatest free kick taker? I'll always remember that freekick against Wimbledon at the Dell where he flicked the ball up and volleyed it in...

Quite staggering....

How lucky were we to have him?

Fantastic !

Some great penalty takers and indeed some great players in that top 10 - And our boy came out on top as always- Even above Zidane and Brehme!

Following also Daren's post - I still understand Hans Segers bears a grudge at the audacity of that MLT free kick!

They have a free kick list on the same website.

MLT is only number 11 in that. Beckham is first. The one I really disagree with in the free kick list is Roberto Carlos - more often than not he seemed to miss the stand behind the goal let alone the goal itself!

Yeah, but you are neglecting the big-club/Brazil syndrome that afflicts every sports journalist working on national newspapers

And I reiterate; any sports journalist who would question that MLT was the best penalty taker of all time, could not consider themselves an expert. It would be akin to an art expert placing Jack Vetriano's "Singing Butler" above Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa

2 [ex] Saints players in the top 3. Bit surprised James Beattie isn't in the list as, to my knowledge, he has never missed a penalty. Coached by MLT, of course.

If I had to choose someone to take an absolutely vital penalty it'd be Matt, no question. BUT, I honestly think that Beattie is the best penalty taker I've seen. His technique is awesome, and whereas Matt not only had the one miss, he also had many penalties which the keeper got a hand to, I don't think I've ever seen Beatts come close to missing one.

While I totally agree with Matt being at the top, it is a really dumb list.

While great footballers, players like Bergkamp and Gerrard can't be considered some of the all-time best penalty takers, they have both missed several.

It would be interesting just to see the same list ordered by success rate.

And James Beattie should totally be in there.

We know Matt le Tiss got 48 out of 49, but I'd be interested to see how others did. I can't find many stats on this subject.

But while we're talking about MLT, I don't think many of us noticed this when he was on countdown in the summer, but it turns out he's pretty handy with the maths too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rteww8eyplQ

David Peach had a pretty awesome penalty record too. Did he ever miss one? He really hit them hard and low, goalies had no chance.

As usual with these lists biased towards the modern generation. Glad someone remembered Peachey, for him not to even be in the Top 50 is a complete and utter joke.

Oh come on, if that Da Vinci bloke had been any good, Lisa would at least have been topless

I think Beattie missed one when he first joined Everton, but have to say that his technique is excellent - he really leathers the ball into the back of the net.

Some players that they have got on their list have failed when they have been put under strong pressure, unlike Le Tiss, who has scored to keep us up - the biggest pressure (away v West Ham).

I'm sure I remember a ref applauding MLT when he hit a volley from the half way line straight from a keeper's goal kick.

The keeper (can't remeber who...anyone help?) managed to stumble back and tip it over the bar.

The ref tapped his hand against his leg a few times in recognition of the most amazing shot! If it had gone in it would have been the greatest goal ever!

How very true.

Sadly, I think it's also the metality of England managers too.

As MLT also once said, you would have thought Hoddle would have picked him for the world cup even if it was only for taking penalties.

Beattie never missed for us, neither did Pahars or Rasiak. When we had that mare against Watford last year, was that the first we had missed since Le Tiss v. Forest?

Dont include the shoot-out at Derby. ;)

Rasiak did miss the penatly for us in FA cup in season 2007/08.

Can't believe Shearer is on the list. The only time I can remember him taking one for us, away at Coventry I think, he missed. Never had much faith in him after that and I'm sure he missed a fair few in his later clubs.

And where is Neil Ruddock? He may have only scored one out of three for us but the one was worth a place on the list on it's own.

Watched a re-run of our "Goals on Monday" show just now, MLT in jeans and a SHORTSLEEVED shirt (Tommac alert!)

They did a piece on that article and showed the Crossley save ( but also the Newcastle goal)

He seemed actually embarrassed by it all, suppose he still hasn't worked out that there's only two people ever watch McAffrey et al down here and one was working nights this week!

No 1 penalty taker and yet he couldn't kick the ball out of play when he had to. Makes you wonder why he missed one, or would that be a cynical thing to say?

I didn't think it's be long until the forum weirdo ruined another thread.
