as it says on the tin.

most depressing day of whole window.

why has it been depressing?

we've had the most successful window we have had in years. Pardew said there would be no more business, so anyone who thought otherwise was a bit too optimistic!

We've spent around 2m in this window and have kept all of our best players. What more could you ask for at L1 level!

because the enlightened few managed to convince some forumists that NO MORE didn't really mean no more.

then, you should belive in what you hear not what someone told you what you may or heard or what it might have ment or not ment if you overlooked it first time or what it could mean in the pre/past tense blah yada bla.....

We've signed lots of good players = Happy Steve.

We can still get loans in, we all knew that it was over, Pardew got all he wanted by the look of things.

Happy with what we have, by all reports semi and seaborne looked good at the weekend too.

Hopefully Barnard will reward pard's faith, i am unsure atm, but massively over the moon with the other signings.

Brilliant transfer window. Well done to Alan, Nicola and Markus. Our squad looks very strong now.

By my back of the envelope calculations we now have 40 players in the squad? If that is correct is it not disappointing we have not sold more than we have albeit Saga was a major result.

At this level I don't believe we need to be paying the wages or managing teh contracts of 40 players although some of those are out on loan e.g Poke and Thomson and some may still go out on loan they remain on our books and presumably there are costs associated with managing them as a result.

Pardew has made some great and some interesting signings but no one to help fill in for Hammond or Schneiderlin or put their place in the team under pressure. Puncheon looks more like a replacement for Antonio.

Players in this season.

That is fantastic. Now AP can begin knitting the team together and planning the assault of the League for next year ! In the meantime we can win the JPT and have a crack at Pompey in the Cup.

Very happy !!!!!!!!

Poke, Thomson, Lancashire on loan.

Saga released - 5 in 4 out.

Shame we can't get rid of Pulis and Molyneux but getting clubs to take them must be difficult.

The trouble is that if no other club wants to take them the player(s) cannot be moved on.

And some idiot signed some complete and utter dross last season; such as Pulis, Molyneux and Forecast (the latter on a FIVE year contract, FFS!)

As another poster has mentioned we have bought 5 in and 4 have gone out either sold or on loan plus Trotman and Mellis went back to their clubs, so we have actually got one less player than we did at the start of January.

Many of these players that AP wants to move on are probably out of contract in the summer so there is natural wastage to be had there.

Puncheon can play anywhere in midfield and I suspect from his comments on the OS that AP will have no qualms about using him in central midfield if the need arises. Add to that the signing of Ostmebor and the soon to be fit Murty, plus Wayne Thomas which will release James to play or cover in midfield as an additional option.

Central midfield can currently be made up from Hammond, Morgan, Wotton, Puncheon, James, Gillett and at a push Lallana so thats not bad for a league 1 side to be fair.

A pity that a couple more loans couldn't be arranged to thin the squad, but money is tight at clubs now so its a bonus that at least Lancashire has gone back on loan to Grimsby. The wild lunge he made after coming on as a late sub against Ipswich gifted them their goal so it may be that L2 is more his level.

AFAIK loans can still be done for another month. I'm sure, in fact certain, that somebody will correct me on here if I'm wrong.

And, IIRC, Pards stated on Solent recently (after the Millwall game I think) that 10 squad members would have to find themselves new clubs in the summer, or words to that effect. Saga's gone, so make that 9.

Danns has apparently turned the move down to the Saints on Deadline day -

http://www.holmesdale.net

Warnock - "With Danns he knew that wasn't the right step for him and his career. "We are looking for him to step up and take on the goalscoring duties from Moses now. He is in great form and we play a system to suit him so he can get forward and score."

Yeah right Neil.....

Players in this season.

That's a brilliant looking list. Barring a keeper, you could field an entire first XI of players we didn't have before August! (Although central midfield would be weak...)

Oh, and I think the loan window opens in a week so we're nowhere near finished yet!

As far as we're concerned, bloody great transfer window!!!

With regards to the thing as a whole, I don't get people whingeing that it's boring because only £30m was spent this year compared to £170m last year, yet these are probably the same people bleating on about how football is self-destructing financially?

Football is eating itself and the reduction in expenditure is an example that poeple are beginning to smell the rich roast. The trouble is that wealth can sometimes deliver a huge advantage that other teams have to gamble on their future success to keep up. The Leeds debacle happened 10 years ago and no one has learned any lessons and clubs backed by huge wealth are being chased by clubs with huge debts bought by not so wealthy businessmen using leveraged buy outs.

It is not a case of bleating, more a voice of valid concern and a return to a level of competition both nationally and internationally that at the moment will only diminish without strict regulation of football by a regulatory body that sits above the whole sorry mess of the FA, UEFA, FIFA and the national league bodies.

Bringing it back to home, if there are 10 players who Pardew wants out and he does not intend to use them then I suggest we pay up their contracts and move them out now as they are I suspect simply using up resources that our more valued squad members need such as access to physios, nutrition specialist etc. A surfeit of players in the squad can only cloud it's complex management on a day to day basis regading training, strain on supporting resources and team spirit with no doubt a few disgruntled players rotting even in the outer reaches of the reserves sowing their seeds of ill will that often under utilised staff will unfortunately sow if not managed.

Finally, with the greatest respect to everyone IMO we still only have 2 players who fully merit the tag of 'recognised / quality central midfielder' . We have others but they are either questionable as a permanent solution, too old and slow, not well regarded by the manger, or better in other positions. Into those categories respectively we have James, Wotton, Gillet, Puncheon and Lallana.

Perhaps if football's finances were a little more liquid there wouldn't be this ridiculous propensity to take players in and out on loan and like overseas players it is probably time to limit their numbers drastically and make those players that clubs do buy and sell look a little less scatter gun in their approach trying to cover all potential bases and overloading one or two in the process.
