Drew Surman coming back??

No thanks. Not what we need in my opinion. Not quick enough or tough enough. Not much better than what we've got and thats before the summer bonanza!

I've always been amazed by the "no pace or strength" argument with Surman. He has a decent amount of pace (not everyone needs to be sprinters) and i've seen him outmuscle two players and run off down the line before.

Sorry, but anyone who thinks Surman CNDAJFU at this level is bananas. He was one of our better players last season, regularly outperforming (and outscoring) Lallana and Morgan who were dreadful. I'd take him back in a heartbeat, although I can't really see it happening. NPC clubs will be in there ahead of us.

Drew is Southampton to the core, would be a great bit of business to get him back, after all he was only sold to keep the club afloat during the darkest days of administration. He never really wanted to leave and IMHO that is why he has not performed at Wolves, his heart was never in it, he is a saint and would be great back here.

Another Mail exclusive - just wait for the Echo to publish this tomorrow as well. I will not be holding my breath.

I'm going to petition NC until he comes clean and says whether this rumour is true or not.

Can you imagine how unsettling this must be for the rest of the midfilders in the squad.

Would love to have him back, but lets be a little bit realistic here .... maybe next year when we are in the Championship, and he has put enough away in his piggy bank to ab able to take a pay cut to play for his beloved Saints.

Have got no hard feelings about him leaving us to go to The Prem, in fact I think a part of his decision to leave was knowing (hoping) it would keep the club in business for a while longer.

Drew would be a fantastic servant in league, but if Wolves want their outlay back it isn't worth it! 500k and it would be great business! While I am at it, I would bring Stock in to play alongside Morgan with Hammond in the hole! Drew would predominantly be on left again wouldn't he?

Why can't Hammond play DM, his main role has been to break up play and pass it on anyway, also we don't need Wootton then.

Drew, Morgan and Adam could then be in front of him. However, agree a player like Stock is most needed to boss midfield and get forward. We don't seem to have midfielders who can take a game by the scruff of the neck and impose themselves. Bailey or Racon from Charlton might suit nicely as well.

Of course, we have to fit Punch into the equation somewhere as well. Perhaps Drew would somewhat replicate his role and, on reflection, for whatever Wolves would want for him (probably Lallana) I suspect Pards might prefer to spend his money in other directions...

would be happy with surman coming back but where would he play? JP and AL wide left and right MS and DH in the middle is good enough to win this league. Yes it would be good to have him in the squad but im not sure he would want to drop back to L1 just to be a squad player

v good player at this level and would be up for the journey - not sure how Pardew would be planning his first choice midfield though.

Schneiderlin - one of first names on team sheet

Hammond - capt and rated by Pardew

Lalllana - 20 goals

Surman

Puncheon??

i suppose it gives us more options and better competition for places. I would still like to see a CM general in there too

We definitely need another CM player and Drew fits the bill. Punch has had to be used there but is not as effective, as he is on the wings. It will allow AP to rotate personnel, be more flexible during periods of injury and suspension and swap formations much easier

Being a little negative for a moment, the one player I think we are most vulnerable to losing is Morgan. I believe he only has a season left on his contract and at only twenty he is already way too good for this league. Surman could be a very satisfatory replacement

Not saying he isn't a great player, but is he really what we need? Where would he fit into out midfield? IMO we should be more worried about getting antonio back than bringing in surman, who is no better than we already have. Obviously I wouldn't be disappointed if he did come though.

Drew did not want to go to Wolves only went because we needed the money to keep the club afloat, welcome home Drew if true.

A valid point. I normally agree with the "Never go back" theory, but in Surman's case, the circumstances were (at the time) purely a means to generate money for the Club

(Plus of course, I can't think of any player enhancing his career under Thick Mick ):D

CM "generals" are a thing of the past IMO. WHo is there that you would class as this these days? In the past i would put Souness, Viera (in his Arsenal days), Keane and our very own Jimmy Case in that catageory but look at the top clubs now, would you call Carrick, Hargreaves, Fabregas, Lampard, and Co midfield generals? THe nearest thing these days is probably Steve Gerrard and i dont think he'd be interested in a move to St Marys just now. Even he is a different sort of player to the likes of Souness though. The modern central midfield usually comprises of a decent ball playing holding player to build the play from the back and an attacking box to box goalscoring player in front of him.

I'm sure he signed a 4/5 year contract?

I imagine the Daily Mail take such stuff from here, then print it, and we put it back on here, making it possible apparently.

Wouldn't obviously improve the midfield. He'd have to be left midfield, yet Lallana has been excellent. Surman has no pace and I thought his delivery was appalling. He'd probably get a few goals though. But he'd also still have the losing mentality that we've been trying so hard to get rid of.

This is a good point.

We should look forwards, not backwards.

It is a good point and I have the same objection.
