Before our " successes " under Lawrie Mac , there was only the occasional FA Cup run and the 1966 promotion to brag about. Fans occasionally criticised players but rarely the managers ..especially as we had only TWO in a 31 year period..but then after 27 seasons (albeit including some very poor ones) came relegation TWICE, and it is just too much for some to bear. Those good seasons were good because we had built a stable team system under stable managemant both on the touchline ..and in the Boardroom. Nowadays everything is based on the last result and people panic when things go adrift. SFC is now (roughly) in the same position they were ..this time last season... and in the first season I watched them ...1958/59 Perhaps I have learned to be...philosophical, but that is something that comes with age and I don't think that EVERY question has a black/white answer. Are the fans wrong?........not necessarily, but many live only for the next match and lack PATIENCE.

Super_Uwe Posted 16 September, 2010 Share Posted 16 September, 2010 It is bizarre but to be honest I don't think we as Saints fans are alone - I think football fans in general have become less and less patient. There's an indirect link (IMO) mentally with the amount of money players are paid to how they should perform, and as a result people are much less forgiving now when things go wrong. You could possibly argue that football in general has only got itself to blame as there's very little that fans now have in common with players, but other than that I just think there's a massive load of people with chips on their shoulders who think they're owed something and football seems to be a way of venting their frustration. LGTL Posted 16 September, 2010 Share Posted 16 September, 2010 One man paid £14 million to own us, and he appointed another man to run it for him. We as fans are owed absolutely nothing, and we have no devine right to know anything.

Just imagine how the fans on here would have treated Lawrie Mac between 74-76, with relegation followed by a poor season the next season I'd be interested to know from supporters who remember those days what the perception of Lawrie was before we lifted the cup We would have hounded the guy out of The Dell

lordswoodsaints Posted 16 September, 2010 Share Posted 16 September, 2010 (edited) I think people of my generation (in their 40's) witnessed the greatest era in the clubs history,it all sort of started to go wrong in the late 80's early 90's for lots of different reasons,ok there were a few highlights, letiss,fa cup final and a few memorable games but it just didn't seem the same as the 70's and 80's......the club and the fans were a lot closer, you could go to an away game and the same faces were with you week in and week out,I could sit or stand in any part of the dell and bump into loads of people I knew and we were all friends. Those days seemed a lot simpler and friendlier, the club and the fans were as one 99% of the time, the players lived amongst us and shared our joy as well as feel our pain but most importantly they were approachable. Jimmy Steele was a mate of my dads, and they used to go out on the **** together sometimes with ossie,I was mates with Dennis wise,Reuben agboola and Mark Dennis,I used to bump into chris nicholl all the time over the sports centre and he was always willing to talk about saints. I'm not name dropping just trying to show how things have changed and IMO not for the better......how many fans these days are friends with footballers? Not many I suspect. What I'm trying to say is that the club today is far removed from the club people my age grew up with,I don't like the club as it is today,I still enjoy my football but I can take it or leave it tbh.....perhaps it's my age, perhaps I'm just a grumpy old git. All these people who claim to speak for me,sisa and the trust are all people who I know from back in the day, they were knobheads then and are knobheads now.let them have their 5 minutes of fame nobody really takes any notice of them. rocknrollman no2 Posted 16 September, 2010 Share Posted 16 September, 2010 As Saints fans i think we have gone through more than our share of managers, owners, chairmen and players who are now playing for someone else at the top level. We have also had to put up with the fiasco of the first Ted Bates statue and things like Rupert talking about Klingons etc.It doesnt help that our freefall downwards has happened in a fairly short space of time.Lets face it we were in the Prem just six years ago. So i guess that makes a lot of us a tad bitter. But at least it shows we all still care.

Charlie Wayman Posted 17 September, 2010 Share Posted 17 September, 2010 We feel let down, simple as that. We are given a bucket load of promises about our future year-after-year by a whole succession of boards which are never fulfilled, we have to endure changes of direction about every 15 months for whatever reasons and we never ever win anything worth winning. Everything we do as a club seems to have been done on the cheap so we know we are never going to get top players or managers and coaches here and we know all our best talent will be groomed for the highest bidder and we just know we will only ever recruit has-been's, wanna-be's and no-hoper discards from bigger clubs and we know it will all change again next year and etc. etc... so that's why we are all so tetchy and ****ed off with every new promise or revelation and every broken dream and the eternal promise of jam tomorrow. I know I have not made myself popular of late because I expressed the view that Adkins is a typical Saints appointment but as a fan who saw his first game in 1948 and has remained loyal ever since it is beginning to look doubtful to me that anything will ever change here. When you are young and much of this history is unknown to you it is quite understandable why you are full of undiminished hope and expectation. I was the same and sometimes still am. Those of us who have stuck it out through thick and thin (except for the second coming of Rupert Lowe) are entitled to feel a bit cheated. Disappointment must be the over-riding sentiment of any Saints fan who has endured it all for so long. ..and just to reinforce my point, Mr Cortese has promised a selected group of fans that the stadium will be improved. My response to that is "When?" After all Mr Cortese you have been here for over a year already and nothing has changed yet... the food is still bad, the loos are disgusting and the queues for drinks ain't worth joining. It all sounds like just another empty politicians promise, always the "What's" but never the "How's" and "When's". You'll see much the same during the Labour leadership discussions. Toadhall Saint Posted 17 September, 2010 Share Posted 17 September, 2010 We in general expect to much - you can't get Nurophen for a football club. Things take time - ie writing Adkins off at this stage is bonkers in the scheme of things he hasn't been at the club for more than 5 mins - you try getting any kind of message across to X number of individuals in that time - the message will be heard but not necessarily acted on or understood 100%. Teddy Nutkins Posted 17 September, 2010 Share Posted 17 September, 2010 After having been involved with Saints for more years than i care to remember, you would think as fans we would get used to trials and tribulations that have be-fallen this club. After last season, which i thoroughly enjoyed, i allowed myself the luxury of relaxing and thinking with the club in safe hands, the manager up for the fight of promotion, we would party on through the season.I should have known better, just when you think it's safe to enter the water, some arse throws in another shark. Why oh why is it always SFC, that has to be at various levels of sewage, why can't we win our first game with a new manager, it happens everywhere else.
