A critical appraisal of the first quarter of the season.

We have only scored 11 goals in 12 league games - and one of those was a 4-0 win. So the other 11 league games we have only scored 7 goals. That is not a good enough rate of scoring. That is not a goal rate which will get us promoted if extrapolated out through the season.

also from all games this season including cups we have played 15 and only won 5. Again, teams which only win a third of their games do NOT get promoted.

we are now more than a quarter way through the season. while there is still enough time to do something about it, it is also fair to say that we are sufficiently far into the season to begin to worry and say that this is not good enough. if some folks here want to slate me for being 'negative' that is their lookout but it doesn't change the above facts one iota. We are just not good enough at the moment.

But the key words in that summary are the three at the end - at the moment. Prior to this game we were unbeaten in 5 and the overwhelming consensus was that we were improving. I was at Tranmere last weekend and it was a million miles from the dross we served up against Swindon and Rochdale. So to base the future of our season on the entirity of the first quarter is not wholly fair or helpful, given the time Adkins has actually been here. Huddersfield was always going to be a tricky fixture given their home record and on this occasion we don't seem to have been able to match them. However, defeat to them is no more an indicator of our demise than last weekend was an indicator of our impending dominance of the league. We are getting better, we will continue to get better and we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

First of all, we should have beaten Tranmere. They were utter crap. As I have said, there is plenty of time to turn things around.

Second, it doesn't matter a damn about 'getting better'. What we need to do is score goals, and we are just not doing that enough. There is no way to sugar coat the first quarter of the season. It is simply not promotion-material. Can we turn it around? Yes. Will we? I hope so. But in recent years there has been this feeling that we are 'destined' to be promoted just because we are Saints. There are clubs out there with a 10th of our resources who are doing much, much better. Sure they can slip up later on and yes, the league table is congested and tight. However we must not be complacent. We need not only to start winning games, but really stamping our authority on the league if we are to stand a chance of automatic promotion.

How does getting better "not matter a damn"? When Wilkins held the fort after Pardew's dismissal,we didn't score once. Since Adkins' arrival we have stopped conceding (1 in 5 prior to today) and we are now scoring again (4 in last two). A defeat to a team with an exceptionally good home record is not the end of the world, as some seem to be painting it. I still firmly believe that we will get promoted and nothing that has happened today has changed my mind. Others may choose to see a defeat away to Huddersfield as the indisputable evidence to the contrary, which is their right, but I would suggest that they are being somewhat short-sighted and should keep the faith. It will come good, of that I am sure.

Getting better, getting worse it matters not, we went into this game deluded by the facility of our win against Tranmere. Adkins got it totally wrong (unless of course Morgan has some sort of knock as he did get laid out against Turkey and then again in Denmark).

we needed to go into this game with a 5 man midfield an Barnard in front of them to try to grind out a 0-0 draw or hit them on a lucky break.

Completely agree with this. I feel that we are almost handicapped by our 'big club' status which frankly is just not deserved. If we were still at The Dell, we would be no better than some of the other mediocre teams in this division. This division requires tough, hard working individuals that can score goals - fancy football alone may dazzle the home crowds, but will not win you the league.

How does getting better "not matter a damn"?

You must of missed the quote marks I put around 'getting better'. Obviously getting better is a good thing. What I was trying to point out is that the only 'getting better' that counts is 'scoring more goals'. And we are not scoring nearly as reliably as we need to if we are to be promoted. As said above, all the pretty football in the world won't matter a jot in the long run unless it results in goals. Goals win football games.

Absolutely correct. That also brings with it the additional advantage that scoring brings pressure from opposition supporters and acts to demoralise the opposition team. Goals are the catalyst to other elements of a successful outcome. On the other hand, no goals makes even a good team look very mediocre indeed. Losing is not a good thing, but a 5-3 loss is better than a 2-0 loss because at least you know that next week that goal scoring ability will probably go unanswered.

usual over reaction to a loss, welcome to football, you win some and you lose some, get over it, think we are in general heading in the right direction. The sacking of Ap has put us back a season, any fool can see that, but maybe it might work out better in the long run and we might get lucky this season, who knows? As I said, this is the sort of football ups and downs i've been living with for the last 20 odd years!

actually I've been saying this before today's game. Wouldn't it have been nice to have got NA in before the pre-season! I think he will do good things for us but I accept that he needs time. the problem is what with ML's passing if we don't gain promotion this season then who knows, maybe the owners get bored..

10 points behind the league leaders is not a catastrophic position at this stage of the season and NA seems to be moving things in the right direction. However, last season we were scoring goals and lots of them. This season we can't buy a goal and until that is addressed, mid-table mediocrity will be our lot this season.

Because we insist on playing the totally ineffective(from open play)Lambert. When someone somewhere has the gumption to drop him

we'll be better off.

So what's changed? That's what I can't understand. Was it hoofball that suited his style? Is he injured or did Pardew mess with his head pre-season?

He believed in all the hype about himself as likely as not, plus with Antonio and Papa on occasions opposing defences had more to worry about that just him.He was pivotal to our system to be sure but it was such that any side who parked the bus and shut Lambert down probably got a draw or better. Obviously that had to change and it has affected Lambert adversely for some reason or other. He may have come here to move up a League in 1 season and now with his career fading into the twilight never having played above League 1 level maybe he's grown totally disillusioned.

Nonsense, sacking a manager shouldn't put a team back a season...Norwich seemed to cope ok last season.

We have been doing ok for the last few games but doing ok is not good enough for the most expensive team in the league.

I wasn't at today's game but we really should be competing with the likes of Huddersfield,it sounded like we weren't doing that and that is not acceptable.

The league table doesn't lie and we deserve to be where we are but the bigger picture is that we have the most expensive squad in this league and most of the championship but this is not being reflected in our play or league position.

There is no need to panic as there are plenty of games to overcome any problems but there still seems a lot of problems to overcome.

+1 Like. Let's not slit our wrists, just yet! It's a marathon not a sprint.

I understand the cause of the worries but let's see where we are at the turn of the year otherwise we'll be worrying about season 2011/12 next week!

Being a seasoned marathon man of sorts (47 marathons PB in the 2 20s) I know that you have to be even paced, it's no good having a target time of 2hrs 30, running the first quarter in an hour and then hoping to run the remaining 19 and a half miles in 1hr 30.

With 15 points on the board over a quarter of the way into the season this is what it would equate to roughly. We need nearly 90

we only have 1/6th of that 1/4 into the season, negative splits yes, but not that much.

It's too early to say what will happen, but we cannot afford many more defeats now if we want to mount any sort of challenge. We've made this season unnecessarily hard for us, but that's the way we love to do things i guess.

The P'boro and Swindon game today sums up this league IMO -i don't think we'll see any run away leaders, it'll be pretty close throughout - but we need to make sure that we're in the mix and it'll help if we can string more than 2 frigging wins together.

Next games coming up - Oldham H - Notts County A - Daggers - H

If we can get 3 wins out of those we'll be on 24 points and in the top 6 with any luck, then we're back in there.....and we then head into fixtures with P'Boro and Brighton. So it could setup quite nicely come a months time.

I wouldn't call Nicola Cortese a fool if I were you.

Pardew was sacked, and Adkins appointed, to deliver promotion without fail this season. Not another pi s s-about season of rebuilding and "we need a full pre-season" and "time to gel" and all that boll ocks.

Adkins has to get this team promoted, without fail, this season.

I despair of these bedwetters on the forum with their delusion that every manager needs three years before anyone can expect them to achieve anything.

He better hope we don't have to many games like to day then. If he does fail (and I'm not saying he will) does he get replaced in the summer? or do we wait until the season is several games in before getting rid and then let Wilkins run the show for a few games?

Amen. He was appointed to do a better job than Pardew. He's had long enough. He's got the resources. He's got to get results. So let's see what he's really made off. This is not Scunny, this is the Real Madrid of League One. This is real pressure. Rise to it Nigel. I'm sure he will.

And promotion without fail applied equally to Pardew, but he was only given 3 league games, not a season. When Pardew was sacked Saints had Played 3, won 1, drawn 1 and lost 1, with a GD of 3 (GF 5 : GA 2) Points 4. That is 1.3 points per game.

Under Adkins we have Payed 6, won 3, drawn 2, lost 1 with a GD of 3 (GF 6 : GA 3) Points 11. That is 1.8 points per game.

This points average would give us 76 points at the end of the season, 3 more than last year but not necessarily enough for the play-offs. Also, the playoffs are NOT promotion, they are the right to take part in a lottery with odds of 3-1 against.

Conclusion, not that Cortese was a fool, but it will take more than a change of manager to improve results to achieve automatic promotion. The squad needs strengthening with quality, not more squad players.

I think it needs eith a striker who can play in Adkins style or a more pragmatic approach to the use of Rickie Lambert. While Lambert looks still a way off fitness, when he is fit, I don't believe he suits the slick, passing interplay style of Adkins. He is suited to a more direct style - maybe one of the reasons Pardew played that way? He's not mobile or pacey enough for the way we played against Tranmere, albeit he is perfectly suited to balls whipped in from the angles!

we are clearly not the worst team in this league or the best, so should expect good and bad runs as we have been having. The question of what we can do about it and how quickly we can get there is the interesting one for me.

Can we improve by training and organising the players we have... yes we can. Can we improve the team by buying in...yes we can. Both will however take time. I think we rae lucky to be so close to and staying in there at the moment.

The thing that worries me most is the strength of character both mental and physical to get hold of a tough game like yesterday and control it or at least let them know that they are in a game. I am not talking here about being technically better and out passing poor sides.

Not quite. Adkins first game was the defeat to MK Dons; as of today his record stands at W3 D2 L2, 11 points, 1.57 points per game which would give us 72 points over the season. Not good enough.

I thoroughly agree with your last sentence though.

Who gives a toss what's happened up to now?

The point is that we are 7 points off an automatic spot. The target has to be, IMO, to get this down to a maximum deficit of 3 points (ideally we would be better than that) by January transfer window. If we are in with a good shout of auto come January then we will be in a good position to recruit strong players and finish in the top 2.

So, we have two and a half months to make up four points or so on second place. That is realistic and achievable IMO.

We will start to score more goals. There are players in the squad who bagged a few last season who haven't got any yet. They will do. Ricky will start playing better at some point. Barnard will go on a run. Lallana is returning to full fitness.

No need to panic - the season's obviously not turned out to be the cake walk it probably should have been but if we can be right amongst it by January we will still rightfully be favourite to go up. Our problem so far has been our home form which has been compromised because of missed chances - nothing more, nothing less. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

I assume you are referring to me Mr Fry. I have never said that people need three years to get promotion. What I have said is that most managers take time to get it right and it is unfiar to sack them after a year if they don't succeed at first. Getting rid of Pardew was not a good move in my opinion. Unless NA is rubbish this season I would not sack him either if we don't go up this season. You might think that Cortese has not set us back. I don't agree. I also think it is unfiar to expect Adkins to deliver promotion this season come what may.

You could well be right, but if we don't go up a change of players might not be a bad thing? Whatever we think of Pardew and Adkins, if we don't go up 2 seasons running with these players in the side, perhaps we have the wrong players?

It is still a long way to go but this team does not look like promotion material.

The team is made up of players cherry picked from teams in this league to give us the best players available in each position. All at a cost of more than all the other teams in this league put together.

Last season Leeds were unbeaten until October. When they had their major wobble in the new year the points were in the bag to see them through to promotion. We now cannot afford another bad spell.

Can this team win 7-8 on the bounce ?

Can we go unbeaten for 10-15 games ?

On current form I cannot see it.

A more worrying thing is that a lot of fans are happy to accept playing in this league and would not be too concerned if we were still here in 5 years time.

This league is crap. Always has been and always will be. We need to get out of here this season or we could be here for years to come.

On current form I cannot see it.

doesn't say much about us at the moment then, what with being in the lower part of it.

Since when have I said Cortese hasn't set us back by sacking Pardew? I said at the time, and I still think, it was a pretty dopey move and set us back a long way.

Pardew delivered the instant success I said he would and you sneered at as impossible because it wasn't how Lawrie Mac and Alex Ferguson did it.

The point is Cortese doesn't think we've been set back, and Cortese expects promotion, without fail, this season. People talking about rebuilding this season, let's see how we go, no pressure etc etc are deluding themselves.

Cortese expects promotion, without fail, this season. That's what Adkins has been hired to do. Not slowly-slowly, gently-gently, don't worry about achieving anything for three years bo llo cks. It's 2010. The days of Lawrie Mac are gone, gone, gone.

actually I've been saying this before today's game. Wouldn't it have been nice to have got NA in before the pre-season! I think he will do good things for us but I accept that he needs time. the problem is what with ML's passing if we don't gain promotion this season then who knows, maybe the owners get bored..

I think we all share your concerns matey.
