Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 29 April, 2011 Share Posted 29 April, 2011 What car does he drive? Just that I could have sworn I saw him in a Merc CLK 55 AMG in Shirley earlier this week. If it wasn't him then he has a very plausible look-alike.

Dr Who? Posted 29 April, 2011 Share Posted 29 April, 2011 If we go up, he will come back I have no doubt. I love him as a player for Southampton back in the day, but I am not sure if it would be a good move, but sure if he stayed fit he could do a job for us in the Championship. sfc1971 Posted 29 April, 2011 Share Posted 29 April, 2011 his in laws live at regents park so with family ties etc I think a move down here when (fingers xxxxxed) we can offer C/ship football would be a "no brainer" for Beatts. However NA should be very careful as to fitness I would prefer to keep hold of connolly for next season as he would be cheaper and prob just as effective. Beattie would come to Saints and take the p1ss ! we have seen to many of these over the last few years.

He's on at the very least 2 x Saints highest player - dropped rapidly down the ranks of higher (than us) clubs, and no where near his best (for us or otherwise). Sentimently, yes it would be great to have him back, but in reality wasn't this our down fall in the past? Getting expensive hasbeen's blotting out the squad? Could do much better in my view - Dobble?

Eaststander Posted 30 April, 2011 Share Posted 30 April, 2011 It will approaching ten years since Beattie was in his pomp at this club. Good times yes, but that does not mean that they can be brought back. Shall we pair him up with Pahars again, I don't think so. Many on here are still traumatised by the Dixson/Speedie fiasco. What we need is the next JB and MP, young, keen, and willing to run defences ragged. Let's just move on up and let The likes of Beattie sit back and look on. His days have past. sotonist Posted 30 April, 2011 Share Posted 30 April, 2011 Shall we pair him up with Pahars again, I don't think so. I dreamed last night that Marian had had a miraculous return to fitness and was in our team for the last few games of the season. He was having shot after shot but i woke up before half time and he hadn't scored by then.

Crab Lungs Posted 30 April, 2011 Share Posted 30 April, 2011 I don't understand the negative reaction. FWIW, as I've mentioned previously about Beatts, is that I think in able for him to "function", he seems to need to be at the right club. And, for better or worse, we are one of those clubs. Familiar surroundings, faces and a fanbase he knows well would do him good. I'm not the sentimental type by any means but I think he could really have 1-2 good seasons left in him and do a great job for us in the NPC. He just needs an opportunity... VectisSaint Posted 30 April, 2011 Share Posted 30 April, 2011 9 goals in 3 seasons (0 in last 2), including a big fat zero in the SPL. Look, JB was great when he was here but he is older and fatter (too many muffins) and can no longer cut it. I would rather have Brett back than Beatts to be honest. The only possible role for JB is as occassional backup for RL, and he would not want that (JB that is). Everyone needs to stop the nostalgia, we need to be building for an NPC promotion challenge (assuming we go up) with an eye to the PL, Beatts does not fit into that scenario in any way, shape or form. He's is a (happy) part of our history. How many games has he actually started these past 3 or 4 seasons? He's moved around and not made any impact. There are up and coming strikers throughout world football these days who could grow with the club. They will be hungry to succeed, not happy living off past success, and not that bothered about re-visitiong old haunts late at night around the town with old friends. I have nothing against him, but as I keep saying, this is about the future now. Let's go find that new Drogba

So you would drop Lambert (80+ goals in 3 years) and replace him with Beattie (9 goals in the same time period). No way would they be effective together, Beattie needs a runner a la Brett. So on that basis with RL's staying power past two seasons he'd get what 15 minutes a game? May come in for 3 or 3 starts a season? And on HOW much wages? Or a promising 21/22 year old who is happy to learn and improve and grow with us. Obviously if Beattie would accept 1500 quid a week then he'd probably be borderline value to us in that role, but that really is not going to happen

I believe RL likes to play further back and be a creator as well as a goalscorer hence he is never there on the end of crosses like JB used to be. I agree we should only get JB back if he took a low wage. Afterall he was part of the problem when we wet down as he wanted away.
svetigpung Posted 30 April, 2011 Share Posted 30 April, 2011 then...yes , great for us. now...no , as a player, maybe , but as a person definately not. He would bring more problems to the dressing room thinking he was a big time charlie. Lets just keep the memories of him scoring against poor old Pompey back then. Lighthouse Posted 30 April, 2011 Share Posted 30 April, 2011 Around the time Beattie left, a certain Mr Rudolf Skacel (only a year younger than Beatts) was banging them in for hearts. 6 years later he's once again banging them in for Hearts (having vanished into obscurity somewhere in the Greek League with Saints fans saying he was finished). I think some players returning to a club where they were once popular could be more comfortable, motivated and up their game.

Cabrone Posted 30 April, 2011 Share Posted 30 April, 2011 I think a fit and motivated BT would be an excellent 2 year signing for the championship as long as he was realistic on wage demands. However I wouldn't want BT (despite having very fond memories of his time here) if it meant that we didn't go for someone like CMS (who would be my no1 target). Under Weststand Posted 30 April, 2011 Share Posted 30 April, 2011 I think if it was a pay as you play contract I'd take a chance. Otherwise is he really are future? Sentimentally it would be good, but he has not been very good since he left us, would much prefer us to try & get Mackail-Smith hungry & on fire this season and he is a real handful.
