Billy Sharp is signing for Southampton today subject to a medical, after Doncaster Rovers and The Saints agree a fee of £3m + Joseph Mills.

above copied from Donny fans forum

Ipswich bid £2.3m yesterday and had it turned down.

All DRFC are saying is they have had a £3m + Bid in for him this morning from another CL club.

Heeeeeeeere Billy..billy..billy.......

Which forum is this? I've just checked one and the only Billy Sharpe thread is a 'congratulations' to the chairman for rejecting a 2.8 mill bid for him from us.

Billy Sharp isn't slow....i'd say he's quicker than Barnard

Agreed. Not lightening, but quicker than what we have.

What I don't know about him is his work rate. Barney works his socks off.

With that said, Sharp is tried and tested in the championship, and I can't imagine why some people are questioning the move TBH.

Barnard is a whole hearted player but likely to struggle in the Championship

wouldnt surprise me if we tried to offlaod him to a League 1 club with a bit of dosh

I think that's a bit harsh on Barney. Yes, he is a hardworking player but technically he's not bad and is also a very decent finisher. Yes, he lacks electric pace, but I think on the basis of the goals he's scored the last two seasons, he deserves a bit of a crack at the C'ship.

Saying that, I would still welcome Sharpe, who I think would give us a bit more pace and something different up front.

How can you say that...? Such a stupid sweeping comment to make when he's never had the chance at this level.

I was told that the club's intention is to strengthen the spine without being given any detail. That means to me any combination of goalkeeper/centre back/centre midfield/striker and this would be a logical and welcome move if true. I suspect that Joe Mills has a reasonable added value to Doncaster over and above any fee.

Great signing if true. Would rather Maynard but given they signed him for over £2.2m a couple of years ago and his stock has only risen since then, this is a more realistic option. I seem to remember Billy being quite "sharp". Perhaps not electrifying pace but busy enough. He's scored plenty of goals in pretty average sides as well. Hopefully with the likes of Lallana, Morgan and Alex OC giving him ammunition he could be quality. £3m on a striker when a defender and another central midfielder are clearly the priorities, to me signals our intent. Very happy if this is true.

This.

Would be very happy with this and think he'll do really well here!he scored 52 goals in 80 odd appearances under NA at Scunny so obviously he knows how to get the best out of him.

Seen a few rumours that West Ham are eyeing up Barnard, I of course have no idea if thats true or not. Would be pretty happy with Sharpe though.

Any club would be mad lining up a bid for a player that could be locked up in a few weeks.

I'm pretty sure he played against Saints for Sheff U in the FA Premier League u19s play-off at St Mary's a whilse back. He didn't stand out compared to Blackstock, Best and Gillet but I remember because there was some northern type sat right behind me who was obviously related - kept shouting out "c'mon Billy Sharp!".

Decent effot for Donny last season, not sure he is worth that sort of money though.

You would be better giving Nugent £40k a week for 3 years than getting Sharpe

Although having said that and using the usual yardstick for strikers, Nugent scored 14 league goals in all competitions. Sharp scored 15 in the league alone.

As far as bang for buck is concerned your Skate logic is evident. ;)

I thought your "source" at the club said we did? Do you not trust your "source"?

I was given info which I passed on on here as I felt it would be of I terse to some. I trust him but it is always possible he was told what he wanted to hear. After all it will only be cortese who knows the true state of our finances and what is going on with transfers etc.

I think a lot of people are thinking what I am. If we are spending 3m+ on Sharp, then it's a lot of money. If this is one of a number of expensive signings it will be a good signing...BUT if its using up the majority of our transfer budget then a bit worried about CM and CB.

I doubt NC and NA are that stupid
