Haven't seen it on here anywhere on here, but Jose Fonte has had an interview with a Portuguese radio station. He talks about Gaitan and Jackson Martinez in the Premier league... and the talk about the move to Liverpool. Not sure whether it's the translation, but he basically says he isn't staying for definite.

The Portuguese Center of Southampton reveals that there are clubs interested in FC Porto and Benfica midfielder and that either one or the other, would not have difficulties to succeed in the Premier League

The market is putting Jackson and Gaitan in the mouths of the world, in England, secured José Fonte, Southampton central, in an interview with Antena 1. "Here in England there is much talk of players such as Jackson and Gaitan. Some have already faced them call themselves top, they would not have difficulties to adapt and play in the Premier League. If they came would have much success and now, if you want to come to the Southampton, have their doors open, "joked.

Joseph Fountain was considered one of the best English League Central and elected best player of Southampton. Liverpool until has been associated with the Portuguese central. "I can't say that I'm staying, but I'm captain of the team, it's important for the Club and it will be difficult to leave, which is not to say that things don't change, if there is a good deal for everyone. But it will be difficult, because things go well in Southampton and people cherish me very much, "replied.

In reality it is true, if a good deal comes in, he'd go, but still not great quotes from our captain.

I hate interviews which are printed in translation. It's bad enough reading something before you actually hear it in your mother tongue. Throwing a foreign language translation into the mix just makes it even more open to mis-understanding.

Especially as the other day he was quoted as saying he was trying to get Morgan and Clyne to stay. TBF at his age I doubt there will be a good deal available he is to important for us to let go cheaply and to old for anyone else to pay much for him.

Totally agree, but thought I'd share it because I hadn't seen it on here before.

This. If they suddenly offer £12m then maybe its looked at, but zero pressure on our side.

Otherwise, he is only saying what anyone else would when asked.

I'm sure Crook will have a story on the Mirror/Star site before midnight though.

Tsk. Boo hiss boo. Take him off the banner before he even gets on there.

To look at it another way, Fonte is going to be 32 in December and maybe his concern is as much about us bringing in a younger challenger for his position and he's looking to maximise his earnings in the years he has left as a top pro, if the opportunity arises.

He said in another interview recently that he feels he has a couple more years here and then he wants to move to the MLS with his old pal Guly.

I don't think we have anything to worry about.

I did raise some concerns about this last week, and thought at the time that quite a few Saints fans might be in for a bit of a nasty shock, given most of the replies, which were along the lines of there being very little chance of Jose leaving.

Personally, I am surprised by very little nowadays. Though getting Alderweireld to sign for us would be a bit stunning.

As much as he has been superb for us, everyone has a price and if we got offered silly money I wouldn't begrudge him a big pay day and semi retirement at the Liverpool old folks home before he heads off to the sunshine somewhere in the MLS (and to be honest, anything over 6 or 7 million would be good business sense for someone who is already 32)

6-7 million can't be classed as silly money. Yes, we need to be sustainable and all that but it really wouldn't make any sense to contemplate selling Fonte as we will likely already need a replacement for Toby. You can't dismantle one of the best defences in the league for an extra few million.

Agree with this.

Struggling to remember any time a club has benefitted from selling their captain.

We did if you count Lallana, albeit only 1 position. Can't deny he was good player for us but never captain material IMO

Fonte's done great for us this season but its more than a little hard to believe that he'll attract the interest of the bigger clubs.

Still, at 31 you'd imagine he sees Euro 2016 as probably his one big chance for a serious tournament with the Portuguese national side. As such, being able to start regularly for a big club could be what it takes to give him that boost.

Still, I can't see Fonte starting for any bigger clubs than us. Especially at his age.

I don't mean to put a downer on things, but, lets face it, he's not thatgood.

How is selling for 6m good business?

A top class premiership centre half with up to four years left in him in that position you would sell for just 6m? Just how much would it cost to replace him? Minimum 4 times that. Selling makes no business sense at all - so why do it?

That's not taking into consideration we are in Europe next year and will need every ounce of very good players we can lay our hands on. There is not one good reason to sell - business or otherwise!

I don't get this talk about Fonte's age being an issue tbh. John Terry is 2 or 3 years older and was the best cb in the league this season, Jose seems to be getting better with age. Would be a massive loss if he left, especially for a measly 6 million

Completely agree. No idea why people are so willing to have our best centre back leave for tuppence.

His age matters because no one will pay what Fonte is worth to saints for a player over 30.

It isn't if he performs like a £10m or £12m defender.

For a 32 year old defender?

How much did we get for 31-year old proven Prem scorer Rickie Lambert again?

£7m is silly money for as long as Harry Redknapp doesn't have a club and Fonte's never played for him. Agreed that he's worth a lot more than that to us though.

I've just got back from my Dental appointment. My Dentist is Portugese and obsessed with football. Wearing a Saints top for my first visit last year means she only talks about Saints and Portugal. Her husband is a Villa supporter and they both went to Saint Mary's to witness the thrashing we gave them. She says Jose (pronounced Joe say) can't get into the national side because he's a little slow compared to a couple of their other defenders but both were impressed with his performance and with two friends (who are Doctors) from Southampton met him and talked football. He is staying with us! He likes Southampton, the people, the Fans and the Club.Spoke very highly of RK and Kat.
