Concerning.

At least the U18's won though, hopefully they can have a better year and start to rebuild their reputation.

Interesting to see how they get on. Carl Martin is now coaching them after his year spent with the first team.

Absolutely astonished we haven't really done any U18-23 recruitment this summer.

Can only think that either:

1.) We have no budget for it

2.) Good players don't want to play in the 2nd division PL2

3.) Below the U23s they feel there is enough talent that will emerge quickly in the next 18months.

Lets hope its #3.

Agreed.

Might be some more trialists.  B Team have a friendly this week but info can be hard to find if it’s behind closed doors.

Difficult to judge as it’s age group but that is an impressive performance

Agree. But we know we were pretty terrible last season and we’ve got a REALLY young group this season & new coach back in place implementing a new strategy.

Anytime somebody scores 5, it’s impressive.  Really promising start by the lads.

Quite a few high scores as Villa scored 10 vs Norwich who we beat last week. Ajani Burchill eho made his Championship debut for Bmth last season aged 16 got a hatrrick.

Hopefully we can at least keep Doyle til he signs a pro contract!

Also seems like we did sign one of the U18 triallists from end of last season, Johnly Yfeko, was on the bench for us today. LB I think.

Doyle signed scholarship terms early so at least we have that in our favour.

Would imagine that as soon as he turns 17 they'll offer him a pro contract.

Interesting that Dave Horseman has said we’ve lacked cutting edge in these first 2 matches (& I know I’ve not seem either of them in training) but both trialists earlier in the summer gave us exactly that by all accounts.

Hopefully as we get sharper, the goals will come.

Horseman not happy after the latest defeat. Basically calling the players out to do better, not sure if that's the right approach at this stage of the season.

We seem to rinse & repeat at that level.  Needed some additions, IMO.

Drew 1-1 with Arsenal in the PL Cup. Simeu captain, Caleb Watts returned and scored early on. Probably a decent result.

Much better!  Little sprinkling of U18's in the squad.

- Lett started at left-back.

- Ballard & Doyle on the bench.

Another young CB we have been linked with. Clearly an area we want(ed) another Academy option.

Still quite short on numbers at centre-back in the U18’s.  Rodriguez has been playing there.

They are playing in the category one academy league system, so how would that work? The club aren't going to willingly sacrifice being a category one club.

Unfortunately that category is based on our facilities, we've got category 3 performances rock bottom last season, relegated and 4 games in its deja vu back to bottom spot once more.

We actually gave one of the worst players I’ve ever seen in a Saints shirt a contract to help ‘mentor’ the youngsters. We really don’t help ourselves sometimes!

He lasted 22 mins and was replaced by a kid.

Getting their usual beating tonight, when is someone going to put the B team out of their misery and let them drop down a few levels?

It wasn't a B team tonight, it was full of kids. We started a 15 year old. They started a few first teamers. Literally men against boys.

The excuses for this B team are wearing thin. There is something not right about the whole set up - coaches / players / strategy / tactics.
they get thumped every week and show the paucity of talent our expensive academy is churning out.
it might have been a little men against boys - but looking at that Fulham team I’d wager a fair few of theirs were kids too, and don’t forget they are a championship club. When your own site write up highlights last minute challenges and early bookings to take one for the team you know they’ve been utterly outclassed.
Prem 2, div 2 is clearly well above their level - worrying

Read the article with Jason Dodd talking about Like Shaw the other day and how his, and Willo’s experience of top flight first team football was used to help the players make the step up.

Since Les backed Martin Hunter over him falling out with Dodds and Williams, we’ve gone for coaches who don’t have the experience of playing at the top which is probably really important in this phase as it’s kind of a finishing school. It’s mostly mates of people, not the best and most appropriate coaches and in many ways, mentors.

Interesting comments about Fulham too. Funnily enough, they employ a number of the high quality coaches and staff we had back when the academy was good.

if I was Crocker, I’d be looking to get some better coaches in for the B team, and if possible, some who’ve played for Saints as they have a deeper connection with the club. It’s what other good clubs do and makes sense.
