As for no sign of replacements, Russell Martin clearly knows more about whats happening on that front than us, so whilst he is calm about it I don't see why any of us should worry.

Les used to be "relaxed" about the summer windows, Ralph was confident, if not convinced we had a striker in the bag, so you can understand supporter's frustrations and doubts.

But agree that it's not for us to worry about, too many other important things to worry about in real life, the assortment that RM has to select 11 from doesn't rate too highly in the scheme of things (even though we'll all moan like mad if we don't bring the right ones in. Again)

And meanwhile you get relegated because the other two aren't good enough

No you reinvest the money, and sell on the other two for a bit less than the cheap money you bought them for. If you go through several cycles like that and get a couple of years out of the good ones you end up where Brighton are. Buy 'experienced, premier league proven value players' and you end up where Everton are

Alcaraz has said that he wants to stay and Sulemana is away having specialist treatment so won't be at all fit until after the window closes.

`specialist treatment' - nah. He just ain't turning up to training cos he wants us to let him go for less than we want to. The only reason he doesn't leave  is because the offer we get is miles off our valuation.

Rather than gutted he seemed pretty relaxed about it all after the game yesterday.

As he and Jason Wilcox have strongly hinted all summer, lots of players will leave. Adams will, KWP will, Sulemana will. Its hardly a suprise or shock to him.

As for no sign of replacements, Russell Martin clearly knows more about whats happening on that front than us, so whilst he is calm about it I don't see why any of us should worry.

Had no idea what's going on and no control over it was his response yesterday.

Is anyone really that surprised?

And we were always going to take around 15 million if he wants to go back to the premier league, especially with Scotland likely to go to the euros.

no. I've ben saying it all summer. We well sell em all.

It's actually a no brainer to sell Adams rather than let him walk for free. The only question is, can we find a suitable replacement.

Ps noted that Piroe not necessarily out of the question. A new contract just puts the price up. Prem clubs sniffing around.

Has Piroe even signed a new contract?

Swansea City announced the Grimes contract. They haven't announced the Piroe contract.

Adams out, Piroe in. It's been on the cards all sumer.

If I’m looking at it with my work head on, not my Saints supporter one on, then even if Piroe doesn’t score quite as many as Adams, they still have an asset with 3 years of a deal next season if they get him for roughly what they get for Che. Che could get Saints up, but motivation may wane past September out of the shop window and if Saints cock it up and fail to get promotion, there’s no asset.

Adam’s is replaceable but the question is do we have the appetite to spend what is needed to adequately replace him. If the answer is yes the. It’s a no brainier to let him go.

SR had absolutely no idea what was required to keep the club in the Prem last season, and I am seeing no evidence so far that they have any idea what's required to get back there.

I'm quite happy to be proved wrong, but I'm not convinced.

7 points in 9 and we are in the playoffs positions mush. Thats a tiny bit of evidence to be getting along with, just a tad above zero. But you do you 👍

If they were that close to buying Adams he wouldn't have been playing yesterday and become an injury risk prior to a move.  Don't believe all you read 🙂

Che looks quite happy here and Everton are a financial and footballing disaster zone. Don’t forget their fans were still protesting after it was confirmed they had avoided relegation.

Clubs will likely raise their valuations once we show interest in someone, too, seeing how much we've taken in player sales so far.

This was always the mega gamble/risk of trying to play hardball and keeping players until this late, in my opinion there comes a line where it's too late to sell and I think we're just about to hit that line - as like you say, clubs will see us as being flush with cash and they'll stick extra $$$ on the end of everything. Saints being Saints will never overspend, always doing it on our terms etc etc etc, which will mean we'll end up with diddly squat.

Piroe has only been mentioned in the gossip columns and then only because of the Martin connection. We can afford to do better than him.

There's definitely a fine line like you say. The worry is that we go for a 'lesser' option in order to fall within whatever the transfer kitty is allowing, and ending up with a meh option.

Not sure what you mean by better. What other proven championship goalscorers are there? Anyone else is bound to be a risk that we don't need to take.

If we’re holding out for prices of our own then surely it offsets that?

I saw one of the transfer window manic depressives, either DMan or DT, saying they’d have preferred us to offload Lavia and JWP earlier for less money so that we could get players in earlier and not get off to a bad start. Well, we’re on a good start and we’ve got at least £10m more in the bank from the Lavia sale alone than if we’d let him go to Liverpool.

As fans we’ve all been disappointed in recent years to not solve transfer problems despite assurances from the club otherwise. And Martin gas continually said we need players out before we spend on players in. It may work, it may not, but (not necessarily you I should say) there’s an awful lot of pant shitting on this board about a transfer window that isn’t yet finished and has plenty of time yet to run.

it's more than that though. He is a proven championship scorer in the last year of his contract and no prem side has come in for him.

If we go for someone else (better) that is fine by me. I'm not sold on him.

Wilcox clearly said in his first interview “ we will not by or sell a player without the pair of us agreeing “

Can you really blame fans given the shit show of the transfer windows over the past few years? Selling off the remaining good players now and then bringing in a load of new players-regardless of quality-is imo a risk we don't need to take.

Everton is a very common BAME name. It’s unlikely Che was named after the most racist football club of the time. They were found out in having a policy only to sign white players. https://www.grandoldteam.com/2020/06/08/everton-are-white-everton-racism-and-the-era-of-change/

Well I thought I was fairly clear when I literally said this line that you quoted from me. “As fans we’ve all been disappointed in recent years to not solve transfer problems despite assurances from the club otherwise.”

As yet though, I’m yet to agree with the level of wetpantery going around in terms of what we’ve had out compared to what we’ve got in, outside of losing a decent CB in Salisu the club has imo done alright in replacing outgoings either by new signings or former loanees coming back. It’s going to be a hectic time until the window closes but at the moment I’m alright with where we are, it looks alright to me. I can’t predict who will go before the end of the window, or who we’ll get in exchange, but I’m not going to panic about it until it happens.

Almost no one has made a fuss about outgoings thus far, it's the prospect of further losses in the form of Adams, Alcaraz, Tella and KWP that people are getting upset about. With very little time to replace them, it's going to be a big risk that we don't need.

The prospect. Exactly. It hasn’t happened yet.

I’ll get onboard with the criticism club as and when it happens. It’s all a little bit Alpine Saint to be criticising something that hasn’t even happened yet.

Yep. But there will be three game periods when our strikers don't score too.

It isn't really about how much cash Saints spend, doubt that's an issue within reason. The much bigger hurdle is persuading a proven goal scorer to either switch teams or drop down a division. There are 4 or 5 Prem teams in the hunt for a decent goal scorer, that's the reason Tella and Adams are receiving bids. I winced at the injuries today because that adds a few million onto the bids. If a bid of £20m comes in both of those players are offski.

So what are the options? Bank the money and stick with Armstrong, Mara, Ballard and Onuachu as this season's attack. Well that's an option and it is better than a lot of teams even if it feels like a downgrade to us. Onuachu really hasn't been given much of a chance and he may start clicking but personally I'd rather see him out of the door and one of Adams, Tella or Sulemana remaining, but if he stays then game on.

Sell, bank some of the money, and buy Pirou. Like others I'm not convinced but he'd fit the Martin system. Probably the most likely outcome.

Sell, bank the money and buy in a promising forward from a Prem academy. Pointless as we have one of those already and he has to be given game time otherwise he'll start looking for a move.

Sell and blow serious cash on raiding one of our competitors, that is an attractive option as it will both boost Saints and damage whoever Saints raid. I can't see Saints going all Man City like that. The cash raised is going to be needed for next year.

Do nothing make them stay, and tell them to suck it up. For that to happen Sulemana and Onuachu have to be sold promptly to raise the cash for salaries and win bonuses.

Probably be a messy mixture of some of those options, all late on as well.

The poster from Plymouth was dead right. SW, Norwich and Plymouth have all faced an attack that others probably won't have to face. That isn't a fair competition. The transfer deadline should be August 1st

Is Che Adams better than Piroe?

🤷‍♂️ Adams has had previous success in the Championship as well as additional PL experience. He has started this season really well with 3 in 3. Piroe has had 2 excellent seasons in the Championship but has not scored in the league this season (although as was pointed out above, he has scored 2 in the cup). Piroe's 2 good seasons have been in Martin's system, so you would think he could fit in well at Saints.

However, if we keep Che and then he has a fallow period then everyone on here will be saying we should have sold him and brought in Piroe. If we sell Che, buy Piroe and he doesn't deliver everyone on here will say we should have kept Che!

Who'd be a football manager, eh?

So last summer when people got upset at the "prospect" of not signing an adequate striker and other posters said it was premature and we weren't allowed to say anything until the end of the window, when the window closed those same people were rating it 8, 9 or 10 and making excuses for the lack of a striker.

Replacing in form players currently performing well in this league is a risk even if the players who replace them are as good or better on paper. Absolutely no guarantees they will work out which is why it's a gamble.

I'd think of more relevance would be the 19 goals he got last season and the 22 the season before that but just because he hasn't scored in his first three league games for a poorer team, he's probably crap...

Your question doesn’t make much sense.

Those people last season who were concerned about a lack of a decent new striker said it because we didn’t have a decent main striker for PL level. And the club, and manager, at the time said that we were almost definitely getting one in. We didn’t. That was a fail. Anyone who says otherwise is simply going against the actual words of the manager. Fact, we kicked off last season light of a decent premier league level main striker.

This season: if we kick off September with Adams and Armstrong then, for me, happy days. If we don’t, I’ll wait to see what the replacement is/are. But you’ll just have to forgive me if I don’t doommonger myself to sleep about something that hasn’t happened yet. I’ve said it before but I’m fully expecting from here on in a 1-out 1-in transfer policy. So I’ll judge it when it happens rather than panic my pants every day until the end of August.

Might as well shut the forum down for two weeks if you're saying there's no room for speculation or comment on scenarios espoused by pundits and reported in the media. If we can't talk about the reported sale of Adams and Tella and express concern about how those sales are a gamble and the chances of players coming in having to be as good or better and having to gel quickly in order to fashion a promotion bid then there's no point in a messageboards existence.
