Just a thought after reading that Matt o’reilly has been linked with Roma after a disappointing first year at Brighton

He’s not been played in his favoured position (8), apparently, and has said he’s unhappy. And apparently open to a move.

He cost them £21m - so we are not paying that ( well I’m 90% confident we are not!) -  but given our strong interest last year it does not sound totally mad to suggest he might be somebody we would love to have on loan if available - and of course would be a guaranteed starter - especially given Mateus and Tyler employment status at SMS may be changing.

I think he’d be a fantastic fit at Saints if he took up the challenge but I suspect there’s a lot better and wealthier clubs than us would take him as a loan- or even as an attacking midfielder punt - and that’s if Brighton even let him go.

Sizeable loan fee with obligation to buy might work for Brighton, but he's not choosing Saints over Roma.

I notice Eddie Beach (former Saints academy keeper) got released by Chelsea. Not sure he's good enough for us either. A player that might be is Donnell McNeilly, a striker, who rejected the contract Chelsea offered him. Not sure he's another Livramento, but might be worth a look.

First goal was a scuff that Che would have been proud of.

Looks as if he likes a tap in as well. But nothing of note there, apart from a top knot, and a bit reminiscent of Mara.

Definitely give him a miss and onto the next one.  Hopefully.

Part of the link last summer was his relationship with Martin. No chance that move will now be resurrected, loan or otherwise.

Nothing wrong with a tap in. It is a skill in itself to be in the right position to score them regularly ala Gary Lineker!

Who is the next one? Trying to buy a decent striker while in the championship (one that will be good at this level but perhaps be able to do it at the level above) seems almost impossible.

Yup agree. Think he’s on about £55k pw so paying that plus a chunky loan fee gives him a year to show he can cut it in English football. An obligation to buy like with THB may make sense. I’m certain Still knows who he is and what he’s capable of. If we lost Tyler and Mateus to big fees but got oreilly in on loan I’d say fair enough, reluctantly, a team with Mateus O’reilly and Tyler on the other hand. Now that would be worth paying to watch!

I’m pretty shore he isn’t. Will look up Donnell McNeilly.

Not sure he's what we need this summer, but Chelsea, City have all the young talent, so I don't have a problem returning to that well.

Did you just compare this bloke to Lineker?

Trust the recruitment team they’ll have plenty of names.

I think we are going to struggle to find the right striker, so maybe focusing on creative players might be a good idea.

Have talent like Chakvetadze, O'Reily and Rak-Sakyi behind Stewart and the side has a very different look.

I dunno, from a physical perspective he fits the profile we're looking for.  Tall and rangy, and sounds like he has good pace and mobility.  He's only 20 (although soon to be 21) and got a reasonable scoring record for a lad that's only really played one season.  I don't know much about him but I think he definitely fits the bill for the kind of player we should be looking at and could see him battling Stewart for a starting position.  Obviously in an ideal world we're looking for someone with a bit more experience but everyone wants one of them and they all cost way more.  This is probably the kind of signing we'll be making.

EDIT:  Only got one year left on his contract too

We're swapping double barrels for Downes/Downs'.

We should sign Lewis O’Brien just to go with O’Brien-Whitmarsh

and there was the opportunity to sign Coventry’s Ben Sheaf to match our Ben Sheaf but I think we released ours this summer

It does. Three different players wondering when Stewart is going to recover. 🙂

We do have the numbers of forwards in the squad.

When we finished 15th in the PL I think it was Adams, AA, Broja, Long, and Walcott used to fancy himself there. We ended up thankful for Broja's purple patch.

Now we have AA, Archer, BBD, TP, Stewart with Sule picked a bit for counterattacks. Plenty of Championship goals there historically too.

Yet, despite each having strengths, we're looking for more of an all rounder; that Adams upgrade SR were going to give us. Stewart looks closest to that, with AA being capable elsewhere in the side.

I'd not count on Stewart being fit. So, I'd say it was still something we'd need.

Seems to from this video

Tall Paul is likely to be off and can't count on Stewart to be fit so it makes sense to get another big lad in.  TBH I like having a bit more a physical threat up front and gives us so many more options.  I loved it when we had Pelle up front but for whatever reason it's never felt like we've been dangerous at crosses since then.

the couple of times I saw him play he didnt lok up to much. Im delighted if it turns out badly for him after he played around last summer.

Lineker said he wasn’t a natural striker so studied endless videos of the top strikers to learn best positioning etc

I don’t believe O’Riley would come. Downs looks like a good replacement for Onuachu, I appreciate it’s difficult for a club of our standing to acquire a solid striker so I would be willing to take a chance on him. What’s importance is his reactivity, and conversion, picking up a decent striker who has underperformed due to poor service from midfield/wings is the way to go. Of course, easier said than done

Matt O'Riley was targeted when we played a completely different game model and were just embarking on a PL season. Matt O'Riley was barely a realistic target then, only really propped up by a relationship with our manager at the time and was rightly recruited by an established PL team. Not sure where the idea that it hasn't worked out for him at Brighton has come from but if he is moving on, it's not to a team who has just been relegated to the Championship who will now play a different way, in a lesser league and offer less wages for the pleasure than when he previously rejected us.

Downs looks a lot better in that video.

Hope we’ve a got a winger as good as Steve De Ridder lined up as well.

A rangy central striker with more pace than the average No.9, Downs has a touch of Germany record scorer Miroslav Klose about his budding game.

If so, that’ll do for me.

True, but then Lineker wouldn’t have put them on a YouTube to showcase his talents.

This is more clever-bollocks.  Personally, I would be pissed off of we bought him to go with the Hoffenheim reserve we’ve just bought.

Why would we spunk a load of money on O’Riley when we already have Fernandes?

Also why would we want to? He never wanted to come here before and now his old manager isn't here.

Not sure he's quite Shteeve De Ridder but we were linked with this fella a week or so ago:

We may hold the cards, but you simply cant tell someone that they can't get a move to a PL side (offering a decent transfer fee) and earn twice as much money. If a club wants him and Fernandes wants the move, he goes.

Nope, our decision if he goes, simple as that.

We enquired for Downs but Koln want a fair bit more than we initially pitched at. He's out of contract next summer so if he's not willing to sign a new one (at the moment he's refusing the extension on the table) then they will sell rather than let him go on a free next year, but it will take more than 5 million euros.
