Four first team midfielders assuming Downes stays and Smallbone and Aribo depart is probably right over a long season with two games per week frequently. With Jelert coming in, seems likely Taylor and/or Bree are departing. I think the one might be more likely to be Scienza given BBD is out the door. 8

We have facilitated a huge amount of much needed change in the squad - it doesnt matter at which stage of the window. We all asked for a proper shake up and IMO we have done it. Unprecedented amount of departures with probably a couple more tomorrow and a good volume of players in - some considered amongst the best in their position from the Championship and some promising additions from outside. Really don't think we could have done much more. 5

saintwbu Posted August 31 Posted August 31 Of all the players seemingly trying to leave, Aribo would be the one i’d choose to keep if I could - to me he was one of our better players last season (not saying a lot) despite being hung out to dry playing CB under Juric a lot. Great on the ball, intelligent, hard worker, he’d be a good option in the squad IMO. 4

Good player, just not physically independent enough to win battles in a midfield two. Bree and Taylor almost certainly, Taylor to Boro was the rumour, BBD went to Derby today. Aribo will be targeting Saudi and if that fails move to Turkey. Fits with Blackmore’s 4-5 out. Edited August 31 by Gloucester Saint

Not picking on you/this comment especially but I have to say I don’t share quite the level of optimism going on round here. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of good work has gone on - we had a terrible squad and look to have made numerous improvements and shifted a lot of sub-standard personnel. We have, however, lost our 3 best players from last season IMHO (KWP, Fernandes and Ramsdale), plus our hottest prospect (again IMHO, Dibling). More concerning for me, however, is that we haven’t addressed any of the spine, precisely the areas that have cost us in the last 5 years. We don’t have a midfielder who can tackle, we don’t have a strong vocal leader at the back (haven’t since Fonte), we don’t have a cf worth the name (haven’t since Ings), and have a keeper who … let’s just say divides opinion. Mostly in that the staff think he’s good, while 95% of the fans disagree. We are better off than we were a week ago and look to have added some real quality. But I can’t see a spine to build around and form our identity around … let alone tackle, score, defend or save. I’m not in need of any Kleenex, whether for tears or transfers induced ‘excitement’. It’s good, but it really ain’t that good. 6

It’s good, but it really ain’t that good. I don't take it personally, can definitely see your point, but Jander is primarily seen as a DM and was generally speculated to be going to a higher end Bundesliga side so he's clearly meant to fill that spot. At the back, I'm not a huge fan of any of our CBs to be honest, but I can see why Quarshie has been brought in and hope he plays a lot this season. The championship is a bit of a weird one for central defenders, I do think there's a lot of mediocrity so maybe the thinking is we can just get by. Upfront it looks like they want to get it done by committee - Archer looked decent for a half at least yesterday and is clearly finding his feet again. I'd actually like to see Stewart given a shot as he looks well up for it. So I think there's probably enough there overall. But not unreasonable to doubt them as well. 5

Willo of Whiteley Posted August 31 Posted August 31 I reckon a lot of the outgoings will be loans. I’m sure our wages are too high for some clubs these players have been linked with

There's nothing concrete at all and they obviously wouldn't do that because it would be admitting abject failure. If they were going to do anything they'd do something like sell Adam Armstrong and cross their fingers that Downs comes good. 1
Willo of Whiteley Posted August 31 Posted August 31 In some ways I would’ve liked to see us release Stewart or sell Archer. Stewart won’t play more than 26 games this season, that’s my prediction. Archer maybe he could come good? Who knows. An accomplished striker at Championship level would’ve been the way to go instead of Damion Downs but here we are. 3
SNSUN Posted August 31 Posted August 31 1 minute ago, ErwinK1961 said: in - Scienza out - Edozie, Bree, Taylor, Aribo Close, I still think Smallbone goes and Taylor stays, purely because of Welington's injury, even though we now have Jelert (still primarily a right back) alongside Manning. Plus his versatility and experience could be key. Edozie I'm surprised that hasn't been sorted yet, he's been linked with an exit for what seems like weeks. It's not like we've kept him until now because we didn't have replacements. We've seen players head off to Turkey after our window closes in the past so even if we don't ship the unwanted lot out tomorrow, it could still happen to one of the countries that still have their windows open (and Interestingly the Belgian window is open until the 8th).

Holmes_and_Watson Posted August 31 Posted August 31 With under a day left in the transfer window, I think we’re still weaker than the team that got promoted in 23/24. We’re not massively weaker, but the drop in quality is telling. We’ve lost the PL experience of KWP, Bednarek, Stu and Adams since then. The 3 bright spots of last season, in Fernandes, Dibling and Ramsdale, are no longer here this season to compensate. While Mads has plenty of PL experience, the others follow the SR model. To be part of a side promoted to the PL, they are all going to have to make a step up. That includes Azaz and Fellows who were at least highlights of teams in our division, which will help. In terms of squad depth, the basis is there. As everyone has said, we need to move on those who don’t want to be here, or don’t have a playing future here, in order to bring in some extra quality. Baz’s upgrade is currently on loan with Newcastle, so it looks as though that position is set. Likewise, Archer is being given the nod, with no one providing the all-round quality Adams gave. It looks as though other funds in this position went on Downs. But we can hope, with BBD’s departure. If Jander isn’t going to be a starting DM, then it’s a position that could really do with strengthening. Likewise, a left sided attacking midfielder would be ideal. A lot depends on outgoings of Edozie, Aribo, Smallbone, possibly Sesay on loan, and even someone’s late bid for Downes. Elsewhere, I can’t imagine Bree getting many minutes now with Jelert’s arrival. As much as I think he’d be fine in the squad, he’s going into the last year of his contract. Here’s hoping for more computer game fun from the media team. 1

Jack Posted August 31 Posted August 31 It’s great to see a big overhaul of some off the dross that have been stinking the place out for too long, and some positive signings ready to come straight in and improve the starting XI. But doesn’t it seem weird that we’re doing nothing about the piss poor goalkeeping department, while being so ruthless elsewhere? 6
Greedyfly Posted August 31 Posted August 31 3 hours ago, Ex Lion Tamer said: In his Middlesbrough season he was 21 years old and scoring more than a goal per game. That's an excellent rate for any striker, let alone a 21 year old According to Fotmob he scored 11 in 23 league games - someone want to fact check them because I know FM can be wrong at times. IF that is correct, as I suspect it is on this occasion, its less than a goal every two. He isn't doing it again I don't reckon either.
