So, how does the finance work for us with Taylor, Smallbone and Bree?

I think all were out of contract next summer, so it means they all walk away then for nothing. So, potentially a loss, compared to selling them now (which we clearly couldn’t do!)

However, I presume we are receiving loan fees, though these will be relatively small

I’m guessing that next summer, if they get contracts, they’ll get a signing on fee as no transfer fee will be needed, though this might not be huge.

Then there are salaries. With relegation reductions, what were e paying these guys? Say an average of £15k pw. Will their new clubs be able to pay that? I’m guessing not, so we are probably subsidising the shortfall, maybe to the tune of the loan fee.

So, we reduced the squad size and the wage bill, helping cash flow, but effectively giving these players away impacts the balance sheet.

Can anyone put real numbers into this? Is this how it works or is it even more complicated?

Incredible to move on from 20 members of the previous season's first team squad in one summer window - and still trying to get Aribo and Edozie out the door

  1. Ramsdale
  2. Lumley
  3. Walker-Peters
  4. Sugawara
  5. Bree
  6. Bednarek
  7. Bella-Kotchap
  8. Kayi Sanda
  9. Taylor
  10. Larios
  11. Ugochukwu
  12. Smallbone
  13. Fernandes
  14. Lallana
  15. Gronbaek
  16. Amo-Ameyaw
  17. Dibling
  18. Sulemana
  19. Brereton Diaz
  20. Onuachu

Taylor walks on a free next summer

Smallbone walks on a free next summer. Wrexham’s £7.5m bid they didn’t move forward with irks.

ABK we have an option to extend but will we? Unlikely!

So you’re probably right, all most likely walk free after this season. Sad indictment of our recruitment in recent times?

Must admit I was sceptical when people said we'd be looking to overhaul to this extent. Pretty incredible.

If he has a good season (lol) then we will most likely extend for that extra year, just to claw some dosh back.

By the way, how much of a spotlight has been shone on Isak's behaviour by the media (mainly SSN) and lambasted?

Compare that to VvD's behaviour, or Schneiderlin's social media post...

... did they get lampooned by the media in the same way?

SSN acting as if player power has spiralled out of control. If they'd been paying attention, they'd have seen it has been an issue for quite a while.

Im not sure how to break this to you, but the media tends to have an agenda

Of the new squad, surely we won't lose that many to the international break?

Bazunu, Manning, Charles, Azaz

No idea about the lads from overseas, and if there are any U21 games coming up.

But, hopefully, the bulk of our squad is here (like Pompey's) preparing for THE game

I think in all 3 cases the monetary values involved are so relatively low on the balance sheet it doesn't really impact us. Smallbone has a zero value as he's an academy product. Missed opportunity for profit but no losses. Bree we signed for less than a mil and chaz I think was on a free.

Salaries they would've likely already been reduced on relegation and then it's just up to the clubs to negotiate the share.

Three of those were either free, academy or signed for less than £1m. ABK looked like a decent deal for a club like ours. He had the talent, just not the application.

There are much worse examples of our recruitment than those four. Lyanco, for example.

Pretty astonishing that Kwp, fernandes and ramsdale are the only good players and people that you can say made any difference to the team.

Some may try and argue that Bednarek should be included here - but no. He was fucking wank too.

I suspect he'll stay for a nominal fee, although he'll be fighting for a place with another stellar ex saint RB, Kayne Ramsey.

Edozie, yes, but not sure about Aribo. I'd like to keep him personally, decent player at this level who will give us another option. If he was on the bench at the weekend, I reckon we'd have won if he came in for Downes.

Would Smallbone have signed an extension before going on loan in exchange for getting a loan to a team he can shine at & saints get a fee next summer?

Possible, Saints may also hold an option year on his contract.

u21 internationals same time as the full internationals.

Under 19's too, so Robinson won't be around either.

Listening to Leo's interview it sounds like our team made contact weeks back on the move so this was well planned out in advance despite it coming down to the wire haha.

Ive always liked him, better than what he gets credit for, would be happy to keep him but dont think he's featured at all under Still has he?

Think we can safely confirm it'll be Will Still's team whoever he picks. This is an almost total reset and has been too long coming. Not saying it's sure to be a success but it feels like an exorcism.

probably not a good time to be swapping from 5 to 4 at the back, sadly.

He's sat in the McDonalds in Shirley waiting for the EFL to confim the move. Had a strawberry milkshake and a Big Tasty with bacon.

I think it's only fair to crack this back out. Well done to the team at Saints. Excited for the season ahead.

Many were critical of Spors after the initial Downs, Quarshie signings and the long gap between further signings and sales - yet he’s pieced it all together with the planning and precision of a surgeon.   Impressive.

Another thing I noticed...

August 29: Fernandes sold for £42m
August 29: Azaz signs for £15m
August 29: Jander signs for £12m
August 29: Fellows signs for £10m
September 1: Scienza signs for £8m

Total spend post-Fernandes: £45m

Really good forward planning from Spors and Lederer

*deal values include add-ons/bonuses

Yeah ABK had the ability but not the application. Rationale behind that signing wasn’t bad as with Salisu. Lyanco never even looked anywhere good enough, better attitude than those two but emergency option at best in the PL. Not sure he’d be that much better in the Champ. Not sure what Semmens was up there.

We've got rid of an awful lot of bloat, that's for sure.

If we get promoted I'm fully aware that we'll require yet another rebuild (with a completely different approach to last time, and VERY astute recruitment).

But the way we've done business, there should be a bit more financial flexibility to aid in attempting it.

In terms of the Championship stars we've picked up, should they not be deemed good enough for the Prem I feel we should still be able to recoup some value from them. I.e. not complete dead wood.

The squad still has its foibles, but I'm not sure there's a team in the division with a 'perfect' set of personnel. Of course there's always an inherent risk to such wholesale changes, too - but what was the alternative?

I'm feeling cautiously optimistic for the first time in a while.
