I listened to the 1h40m Will Still episode of the High Performance podcast a good while back - I know Turkish is a fan 😉 and suspected that he might end up at Saints at some point. The BBC seven minute interview with Julian Laurens waxing lyrical is also worth a listen.

I can't claim to watch French football so went looking for knowledgeable Saints fans who do, and found these posts. Hopefully they will add something to the discussion.

Understand rohl holding out, its obvious he wants to move home like still does to uk so fairplay to him, assume he fed that back to Spors.

Very excited about the appointment myself, what he can bring, explain and implement with the overarching goal of trying to win football matches not stats.

Why is it taking so long? I thought Spors was meant to know what he’s doing. Sounds like he’s a poundshop Les Reed to me. Just watch someone else come in a Nick him whilst Spors is guzzling on his sausages

After two dogmatic coaches blindly playing a a rigid system at all costs that is music to my ears. I'm increasingly optimistic. That being said I'm optimistic every time we appoint a new manager despite recent evidence failing to support that.

It’s not too late to get a manager with (check notes) experience of the Championship rather than yet another appointment that makes the appointees into some kind of genius if it comes off. Not that any of the ‘clever clever’ left field reinventing football ones have. Talking about a video on Monday Night Football isn’t enough for me. We’ll see how the players take to him - they’re so confused by all these systems. Should have gone old school.

I am not sure that they are trying to be seen as being geniuses. The object is to recruit someone who is going to be a good fit for the club going forward. There is a tranche of managers who will always be out of our reach which leaves a list of managers  who have experience but have been sacked a number of times for not achieving and a list of up and coming managers who have potential. Some clubs go for tried and tested, some go for potential. There is a risk with both. I don’t have a problem with going for potential. The next tranche of higher level managers is out there. It is just a question of finding them.

Congrats, I think you got the full bingo card of lazy comments in that one

- I couldn't give a rat's arse if he hasn't played professional football; Terry, Gerrard, Rooney had great careers and I wouldn't want any of them in charge
- Players will judge him by the quality of his sessions, the advice he gives the team and how he handles them as people; I know players who have played for guys with amazing playing careers and they've turned round and said 'he couldn't coach for shit and his assistants had to do everything'
- He didn't 'learn football management on a computer game' he went into analysis and coaching early and did his badges and worked his way up. He also played the Football Manager video games in his spare time. Maybe he even broadened some of his knowledge in the process. However, feel free to find me any bloke in their early 30s who loves football and hasn't played a football video game, be it FM, Pro Evo, FIFA... whatever. It's just a new generation of people arriving in their 30s and starting to get coaching jobs now
- Ligue 1 getting called 'the level of the Championship' is really laughable. PSG, Lyon, Marseille, Monaco, Lille, Nice are equivalent to Champ clubs? I don't think so
- He grew up in Belgium, yes, because his Dad moved his wife and kids for a job over there but has repeatedly said England is 'home' to him, he speaks native English and his entire family is English

So yes, he has done quite well for a young English coach working overseas, it's not really up for debate. He hasn't stunned the footballing world with an outstanding achievement as yet, he hasn't won a trophy, but to belittle his career with lazy tropes is a bit boring and just suggests you're not paying attention

For the record re: standard of French football. PSG by far the best and riches club in France have never won the Champions League, indeed only twice has a French club ever won any European Cup. It's a one club league with a couple of ok ish other clubs and then fodder.  Think Scottish Prem.

SO we're about to appoint Still on an 8th place with Lens and his interviews on various performance podcasts. Jeeez!!!!

How many Championship clubs have won the Champions League?

I like that, ‘makes the appointees into some kind of genius if it comes off’.  That’s exactly how the idiots have been operating since day one, with managers and transfers.  They’ve looked anything but genius.

They never learn.  Absolute joke of a club.

Don’t entirely disagree with the point.

But equally I think Will Still is the kind of manager where if he went to another club you’d be thinking “smart move”.

It looks like we’re getting him, time to back him. Ultimately the manager will fail with these players still at the club, I’d be more concerned with transfers.

Just because PSG have never won the CL, doesn't mean the entire French league is poor. It's probably equal to Championship level, with a handful of prem-level teams, a host of champ ones, and a couple of L1 standard outfits. Not a bad place to have come from heading into the English championship with a strong club.

Wanted to add something to the debate about how the La Ligue compares to the Championship.

According to Global Football Rankings Ligue 1 is 5th ranked, Championship 11th, so that should indicate that he’s more than capable

Will Still’s Lens side finished 1 league position and 5 points behind Rosenior’s Strasbourg. 🇫🇷

This summer, Stras had a net spend of +€62m vs. to Lens’ -€73m. Not to mention the loans due to the Chelsea association.💰

Interesting how both coaches are perceived.

Tonight you're mine completely
You give your love so sweetly
Tonight the light of love is in your eyes
But will you love me tomorrow?
Is this a lasting treasure
Or just a moment's pleasure?
Can I believe the magic of your sighs?
Will you Still love me tomorrow?

😃 I am a fan, he came across really well on that and it changed my view on him. Seems like a very bright guy and despite not being the most charismatic was fascinating to listen to. As for the podcast in general they have some very good guests on there like to listen to it on my lunch time walks

Strange if they’ve decided he’s the one that they can’t conclude a negotiation. If he is the most important piece of the team and future. Not paying and bringing him in feels a little bit weird.

maybe something legal maybe playing silly buggers and being cheap maybe don’t want him and playing game to get Rohl. Who knows…

As has been pointed out on here quite a few times before now, in the last 9 or 10 years only Daniel Farke has had Championship experience and gone on to win the division. Left field clever clever appointments are actually quite..clever.

No idea if Still will get the job, if he’s the right man or if we’ll be successful but shouting old school isn’t the clever point you think it is. You simply do not had to have had experience to be successful.

SKY blog still doubling down on Still being the main target (for now at least) - https://www.skysports.com/football/live-blog/31771/12476234/transfer-centre-live-football-transfers-news-updates-and-rumours

Seems a bit cruel of you to post this, with no context, and then just bugger off. I was just starting to like the idea of Still instead of Rohl, so hoping this is just WUM behaviour.

Completely agree - if the poster cannot enlarge on what he is privy to he should not post anything rather than his ambiguous 'A twist?!?!?!'

Purely speculation but Will Still changed his mind on becoming Vincent Kompany's assistant once he saw the setup and what was required of him.  He seems like a bloke who goes with his gut feeling and it wouldn't surprise me if he agrees a deal in principle and then has a change of heart once he gets a look and feel for the club.  Total speculation based on pilchards twist post, nuffink more.

Is the twist Russ joining Leicester?

Happy if that's the case, as long as we end up with a manager who prefers even the most half-hearted of presses... 6 points incoming.

Is Pilchard one of these 'in the know' posters?

I have vague memories of Pilchards apparently climbing trees at Staplewood (with binoculars?) to gather information.....
