For those old enough, Red Dwarf and the 'backwards' episode is all I could think of every time I heard Mat-ski.

Matski and Matsuki are quality. Who knew we had them both in our squad, maybe we don't need attacking additions afterall.

In all seriousness he's someone I've liked the look of during pre-season, he's agile and can nip in and around in space. I wouldn't say he's a traditional CM, can probably play that 10.

He took his chance.

I love it when a player gets a chance and takes it by scoring a fantastic goal immediately. Nothing says “pick me” and “ how’s this for impact” like taking the ball on the turn running ten yards and smashing it into the net. WP son. 🙌

Have you seen what Arthur Smith said to them if you play the tape forwards?

He's clearly a bit raw but I think he has a football brain the way he takes up positions between the lines and comes short to receive the ball. Might be one the coaches can polish. Like the fact that he is eager to get forward and was always very positive in possession tonight. It was great to see him drive forward and then not be afraid to back himself and unleash the shot for his goal tonight. Much to be encouraged about.

Looked decent tonight, but that was only Norwich reserves. Think he can hold his own if given the chance and the midfield is strengthened (and the 5 at the back dropped).

I fancy seeing Still challenge him to play into the Japan squad while at Saints to be fair.

Hajime Moriyasu was supposedly the national coach Will Still was alluding to about only picking players from 1st divisions. He encouraged Sugawara to leave so probably won't put much weight on Matsuki's Championship performances.

Amusing really when most of the Japanese team appear to play in leagues you would say are weaker than the Championship.

Going from the post match interview on Solent with Still there is still a language barrier, which is why they are giving him cameos at the moment as he gets up to speed. He takes it on the half turn which a lot of our players don’t, so I’m hopeful.

And his deft half-turn was something Flynn Downes could take note of.   Matsuki’s cameo, the emergence of Shea Charles and the Archer showing were the highlights of last night.   Fraser’s continued good form and an improved showing from Edwards were reasons to be cheerful too.   Much maligned Macca did alright.   To cap off a good night there were definitely signs of a well organised high up the field press.

 🤦 Yes. That's the point.

Get Still to challenge him to play in a way that shines a spotlight on himself, makes him self stand out with worldies and makes the manager look like a dick if he doesn't pick him.

Also makes the manager look like a dick for making Suguwara move.

Aside from the fantastic strike he looked very lively and was constantly looking for space and wanted the ball from the moment he came on. So for me it’s a keep him here and don’t loan out.

I don’t think we should be complaining about that to be fair.

Its the principle of International managers destabilising players. Not how the player currently fits in the team, or how well her plays.

It's a nice thought.

All the above plus special mentions for Mads and Quarshie. Thought Wood did ok as well and Taylor when he came on.

In the highlights he did that half turn a couple of time and advaced like 10m, not see a player do that for us for ages (lavia), normally its pinged straight back cos they cant talk the ball under pressure and turn to beat the man.

To see how not to do it, Downes last Saturday in the centre of the pitch,  Matsuki did on the right side to easier to defend if lost.

Probably won't make the squad again.....far too positive and too much attacking intent for us!

With Fellows, Azaz and Janker coming in to strengthen midfield I hope we keep hold of Kuryu. I think he'd be good cover for injuries/suspensions and a bit of an X Factor when needed off the bench.

Why? Robinson is also a winger.

In the current formation they would be both vying for the same place. As one of the two players supporting the striker. Currently occupied by Scienza and Armstrong. Robinson has so far shown more than Matsuki to be higher in pecking order.

Only because Matsuki hasn't had an opportunity. I've seen nothing to suggest we aren't going to plat Robinson on the wing in which case he's competing with Scienza.

Armstrong / Archer / Scienza / Jander / Matsuki / Jelert are all short players - when everyone is clamouring for a 'strong spine' this might be the reason why he hasn't featured more. Azaz, Fellows and Flynn Downes are all bigger players and Jander/Charles seemed to do a pretty good job together.

Matsuki is the most lightweight player I have seen in a while. Against Norwich he scored a great goal, but every time he got close to a Norwich player, he was brushed off the ball.

This is my view of him. He popped up with a great goal and looks really busy, but he's proper weak and will get dispossessed quite a lot. I can see why he hasn't been playing. He won't get the freedom he had in the lead up to his goal in many games.

He looks a tidy player with energy, but he'd just add to the issue we already have - no steel, just lots of meek technical players who get knocked off the ball.

Absolutely this. What I've seen with Matsuki's cameos, he looks a tidy player but he can't replace the likes of Fellows or Azaz...though he could have been on the bench at Blackburn!

What I don't understand is why our recruiters didn't bring in any muscle. They'll all the same ilk. Matsuki & Downs are particularly lightweight.

I thought we were changing that in the summer with Downs and Quarshie, some even Quarshie whilst tall is quite weak in one-on-one duals.

But after adding some height with those first two, we didn't really continue in the same vein which was odd. I thought we were hitting the spine of the team with some physical presence.

Tall yes but there's no real muscle there. Downs is particualrly flyweight. Absolutely no presence whatsoever. Whereas that Bristol City sub last week seemed to brush our defence aside every time he had the ball.

Matsuki was a Martin era player so another more technical than athletic/strong player.
