If the £7m rumour is true for AA it's pure insanity bearing in mind that's what we paid for Downs.

We basically set fire to 7 million.... Didn't think he would be a world better but neither did I think he would be that bad! He was off the scale useless!

Aren't all signings data driven? Unless we are literally lobbing darts at a giant transfer dart board (which tbf wouldn't be the biggest surprise.)

All transfer will have data associated with the player. When Shields was around for example, he chose Man City players.
When Sheffield United bought Ehije Ukaki this summer it was purely data driven

What a disappointment he and Salisu turned out to be. Both big, powerful and not the slowest but still fell short of what we needed at the top level. I didn't agree with Doswell's 'bottler' assessment of ABK, but his failure to handle Awoniyi and desire to play for Saints once we got relegated were equally damning. I used to absolutely slate Bernard for his pathetic displays in 2004, but when you compare him with someone like ABK, I wonder if I might have been a little too harsh.

Only if you are in your late 50s.

This must be the guy that has stalled meaning Archer stays?

Wouldn't get a work permit.

So if we are in for him, it's with the immediate intent to loan him out (probably to Goztepe) to a stronger league until he earns enough points to qualify for a WP - as happened with Matsuki.

ABK signing for Verona actually reminded me that there’s a Saints player I give less of a sh*t about than Aribo.

One the 4 non leaque players we have, another one gone also.

If they still buy him now, it has to work within their PSR budget though, which obviously will be impacted massively if they don't sell Larsen.

Is that why Saints can only get boot sale and 2nd hand charity shop players?

if you do a KLF with your transfer kitty, then the car boot and charity shop are the only option.

My mother called me at work. She never does that and she knew nothing about football! She just knew it was important. In 10 minutes it was all over office (long before the inception of mobile phones). Top item on 6 o'clock news.

4/10 because we got rid of Aribo otherwise is a 2/10

And Bazunu. But it still doesn't go above 4.

Of fuck. Another donkey for the sanctuary. SR never learn.

Is it just our fans who write players off before even seeing them play? I'd never heard of the bloke until yesterday, so will reserve judgement.

But the positives...

- An experienced International, having nearly 90 caps already and is desperate/driven to play well for the next 4 months to make the squad for his home World Cup (he averages a goal every 3 games for them, not bad in a crap team! But yeah, I know they play some poor opposition).

- He's really experienced at club level too, having played in the MLS, Turkish Superlig, Belgian Pro League, La Liga and Eredivisie, and hes scored 120 in 360 game (1 in 3 average, which is decent isnt it?)

- We've moaned for years that we lack height and strength in the team, especially up front, and now we look like we are getting a powerful, quick, 6' 2" striker to lead the line, which we've been crying out for for ages and should suit the league.

Larin feels like a sensible, low-risk option up top to me, and he's only on loan. He’s a proper No.9 — big, strong, and knows how to play with his back to goal. Will give us a presence in the box, get on the end of crosses, and occupies centre-backs, which is something we’ve lacked at times.

Can we just give the bloke a chance? I cant believe we are writing him off because he's Canadian (so a lazy/obvious comparison with his Yankee neighbour, Downs) and because some kids have posted a showreel of some missed chances. Have you looked at the video's where he does score? I'd recommend it as he looks better in those.

My opinion of this guy as a centre forward has nothing to do with him being Canadian.

I seriously hope he is better than the evidence suggests.

Looked at a couple of youtube vids from his time in Spain (always a reliable way to judge a player!), and he looks, at least worth a gamble. Big strong and fast 🤞

I remember when we signed Crouch, and the uproar from the fanbase as his stats were shocking and he'd never be able to play at the top level, that turned out OK, you just cant judge someone without seeing how they fit into a team/style.

I also have little faith in SR given the absolute dross they have signed in recent years, but I'll at least give a player 10+ games before I decide how good/bad they are, this guy hasnt even stepped foot on the pitch yet!

At least let him prove whether he is shit ffs… so many so great at making their mind up on managers and players before they have even walked through the door.

There is a little bit of everything in here, including two goals for Larin, who bounces off and runs past Romeu for the first and takes advantage of a Gazzaniga fuck up for the second. Not sure I come away feeling terribly great about Larin. He hardly ever scored and one of those was a gift...but at least he is running around in those clips.

Exactly... remember we brought in that awful inexperienced manager in 2001, Gordon Strachan? He'd just got top-flight stalwarts Coventry relegated for the first time in 34 years! How could he possibly do a job for a similar sized club like Saints?

Hopefully Larin has been misused and is more suited to physical leagues like us and turkey.

He will want to get in the canadian team and the best way to get attention is to smash some goals in.

I'm judging him on what fans at clubs he's played for think of him. Say what you like and call fans fickle but generally I find most are usually on the money when judging players. Maybe this guy proves the exception to the rule but I'd be very surprised. He's a cheap option and we could and should be doing better.

Great post, and a welcome injection of common sense.

He's been signed to give cover, and when he does play, to annoy defenders, give us an outlet, hold the ball up, bring others into play, and score the odd goal.

He ain't going to be a poor man's Drogba, but given where we are in the league, we wouldn't have had many (if any) better players beating our door down.

Let's see how he gets on, but I'd imagine (hope) he'll be a significant upgrade on DD.
