Didn’t know his wife (and new baby) are still living in Germany. That’ll be tough emotionally to be apart this season (or - lucky him, depending on your perspective)

Any reason Ben Garner's photo has gone from the Saints team page? Odd.

There has never been a picture there for him.

Feels like the FA could still derail our season with some bullshit call over this. So shit that we’re 3 weeks away from the start of the season and it’s not resolved, entirely predictable though

An interview with the enemy. Man, that takes some doing. After suffering threats, paying the biggest price, the most over the top punishment ever distributed. And yet, still just having this hanging over you, but also having to talk to the sneering press. I hope he gives them nothing this season, dead eyed monosyllabic answers and depart. Nothing.

He has paid an unfair price already. He owes nothing more. I hope he gets off to a good start and frustrates them further.

I saw it before it came down. It didn't mention the punishment, but it did say he had been charged with breaching Rule E3.1, which I believe is 'bringing the game into disrepute' and it stated that the club remains fully supportive of Tonda

No, they just say they've acknowledged the charges laid against Tonda, but I can't find anything about it anywhere else.

ChatGPT says..

A breach of FA Rule E3.1 (Misconduct) gives an Independent Regulatory Commission a wide discretion to impose sanctions. The exact sanction depends on the nature of the misconduct, whether it was admitted, the participant's disciplinary record, and any mitigating or aggravating factors.

The available sanctions include:

  • Warning or reprimand regarding future conduct.
  • Financial penalty (fine), ranging from relatively modest amounts at grassroots level to very substantial sums in the professional game.
  • Suspension from football activities, including:
    • Match suspensions for players.
    • Touchline or technical area bans for coaches and managers.
    • Ground or stadium bans where appropriate.
  • Education or training requirements, such as mandatory equality or respect courses.
  • Orders as to costs in disciplinary proceedings.
  • Any other sanction the Commission considers appropriate under the FA's disciplinary regulations, provided it is proportionate. www.thefa.com

Typical examples

The sanction depends heavily on the conduct involved:

Type of E3.1 breach Typical sanction
Improper behaviour Warning, fine, or 1–3 match suspension
Abusive or insulting language Fine and/or suspension
Threatening behaviour Longer suspension and larger fine
Comments implying referee bias or questioning integrity Significant fine, often with a touchline ban
Social media misconduct Fine, warning, suspension in more serious cases
Discriminatory misconduct (E3.2 aggravation) Minimum six-match suspension plus fine and education requirement

Recent professional examples

  • Marco Silva (Fulham) was fined £90,000 and received a one-match touchline suspension for post-match comments implying bias by a match official, contrary to Rule E3.1. www.thefa.com
  • Matthew Uggla (York City co-owner) was fined £750 and warned as to his future conduct for offensive social media posts under Rule E3.1. www.thefa.com
  • Lloyd Hume (Ashford United manager) received a £1,000 fine and a six-match ground/stadium suspensionafter multiple proven E3.1 charges arising from his conduct towards match officials. www.thefa.com

If you're asking in relation to a specific FA Rule E3.1 charge (for example, comments about referees, social media posts, misconduct towards officials, or bringing the game into disrepute), I can also explain the likely sanction range based on comparable FA decisions.

The FA has not yet announced its decision, but if an Independent Regulatory Commission finds that he breached Rule E3.1 (acting in an improper manner and/or bringing the game into disrepute), it has a broad range of disciplinary powers. The Guardian

Those include:

  • A formal warning or reprimand.
  • A financial penalty (fine).
  • A suspension from all football activity, which could:
    • prohibit him from managing matches,
    • prevent him from entering the technical area,
    • prevent him from coaching or training players,
    • in serious cases, ban him from any football-related activity for a defined period.
  • Mandatory education or training.
  • Costs orders relating to the disciplinary proceedings.
  • Any other sanction the Commission considers appropriate, provided it is proportionate.

Could he receive a lengthy ban?

Yes. Based on previous football disciplinary cases involving deliberate attempts to gain a sporting advantage, a suspension measured in months rather than matches is entirely possible if the Commission concludes that:

  • he authorised the conduct,
  • the conduct was deliberate and organised,
  • there was an attempt to gain a competitive advantage, and
  • the misconduct brought the game into disrepute.

The FA is investigating after the EFL's separate disciplinary process found that Southampton had engaged in organised spying on opposition training sessions. The EFL had already expelled the club from the Championship play-off final and imposed a four-point deduction for the following season. Reports indicate Eckert admitted authorising similar surveillance against multiple clubs. The Guardian

Could he be banned for 12 months?

Yes. There is no fixed tariff in Rule E3.1. The Commission can impose whatever suspension it considers proportionate.

Some legal commentators have suggested that a ban of up to 12 months is within the range of available sanctions because the conduct was alleged to have been planned, repeated and intended to obtain a competitive advantage. However, that is speculation rather than a prescribed penalty, and the FA has not indicated what sanction it is seeking. The Guardian

Given the seriousness of the EFL findings, the realistic outcomes range from:

  • a substantial fine with a touchline suspension (if the Commission views the misconduct as serious but not warranting exclusion from the game), to
  • a ban from all football activity for several months or longer (if it concludes the misconduct strikes at the integrity of the competition).

Will be interesting to understand why they've deemed that Tonda "brought the game into disrepute" but Bielsa didn't. Could it be the "bullying" aspect is the differentiating factor...?

Southampton Football Club and First Team Head Coach Tonda Eckert acknowledge today’s charges from The FA relating to a breach of Rule E3.1.

Tonda and the club will continue to cooperate fully and openly with The FA.

Our focus remains on preparations for the 2026/27 Championship season. The club remains fully supportive of Tonda and his staff as we work towards our ambition of returning to the Premier League.

We are unable to comment further while the process remains ongoing, but we will provide an update to supporters as soon as we are in a position to do so.

Well that’s basically a holding statement then.

Well, the club acknowledge the charge and not contenting it (until the article was removed).

Which is more than we knew previously

I think we always knew he’d be charged with something.

Its the punishment that’s the crucial bit and I don’t understand why the FA haven’t announced that with the charge.

We assumed he would, but guess we know for certain which rule has been broken, and admitted to.

As you say, nothing from the FA

It will be because that's not how the process works.

The FA will bring a charge following an investigation (the point it seems like we are at now).

An independant disciplinary commission will then hold a heraring to decide on guilt (if charge not admitted) and sanction.

Not that I can see.

Given Saints initially pushed the statement at bang on 10am, I presume the charge has been made, but the public communication is embargoed until a certain date/time which we've got wrong (hence the hasty deletion).

So this could drag on a fair while yet, and presumably if SFC consider the sanction harsh that’ll be when Dragan gets his lawyers to work ?

Given we have seemingly admitted it, presumably the punishment can be announced fairly swiftly.

Hopefully they deem the punishment levied already is “sufficient” (aka disproportionate) and no further sanction necessary.

That won't happen because Tonda hasn't actually been punished yet.
