Is there a thread already?

So Parsons mentioned it last night & I recall Dragan hinting about his secret pet project a year or so ago?

Given the importance of commercial money in regards to spending, this could be massive thing for the club.

Anyone know much about what we’re discussing with the council?

This is part of what was available for public viewing on the Southampton Planning Portal earlier this year, not sure if still up.

Extract of the memorandum of understanding document between SFC and SCC:

  • Expand the current footprint of St Mary's Stadium to allow future growth of the stadium (minimum 45,000 capacity stadium for football events and minimum 50,000 capacity for concerts/music/other entertainment events).
  • Work with SCC to understand the development opportunities for the St Mary's Waterfront area, including developing an effective together to acquire and develop land in St Mary's Waterfront to maximise additional significant revenue generating opportunities in the area immediately around the Stadium.
  • Work with SCC to create a 24/7, 365-day set of commercial, leisure, sports and entertainment operations around St Mary's Waterfront.
  • Work in partnership with SCC to develop the optimal use of the land in and around St Mary's Waterfront. Use the operation of such additional activities to make the St Mary's Waterfront the prime sports, leisure and entertainment destination on the South Coast.
  • To become the prime operator and owner of leisure and entertainment facilities in the City.
  • To use the revenues produced by the additional commercial activities to establish Southampton Football Club as a genuinely sustainable Premier League football club and work with SCC to make Southampton attractive to residents and visitors.
  • In collaboration with SCC, development and deliver a strategy to significantly improve the transport infrastructure of the City to make it a destination of choice for visitors nationally and internationally. Grow and develop relationships between the Club, partners and communities across the City
  • Alongside of SCC and as part of their overall masterplan for development, play our role in the sustainable development of the City

Phil Parsons at the fans forum last night...

 "Your revenue level is tied to your salary level and without the increased revenue you can't drive your salaries into higher levels. We've been working a lot on some real estate projects around the stadium. We're not quite at the point of being able to publicly share those because we're in talks with some major developers. But I can tell you that they will be one of the biggest development projects around any stadium in the UK."

Parsons mentioned the reveal may be in 12 to 18 months time.

Solak had previously said it is into the hundreds of millions of pounds being spent on this. Not just around the stadium either, a stadium capacity increase is also included.

We sold out about 4/5 out of 23 league games last season.

Yeah, the stadium is about right for where we are at the moment.

The one that always stands out for me is Middlesbrough. (Why wouldn't it be!) The Riverside never sells out, it would be embarrassing to have that level of spare capacity. If Man City struggle to sell out 50k, then it would be daft for us.

But that is not where we want to be...you could argue Baz or BBD are right for where we are at the moment.

Big mistake and shame Saints didn’t buy the gas site if they’ve any great intentions of expanding.

Actually he has a point. Let Parsons immerse himself in this development project and bring someone else in to run the club (without the fuck ups in PR and defending the club’s position in times of crisis)

By my understanding the project's very much driven by Dragan.

The club's spent an awful lot of money developing plans - way more detailed & specific than anything shown to date - for land it doesn't own yet.

Unfortunately the relevant landowner(s) know the future value, so are asking silly money. I don't know whether the club will just cough up or if there's an ace up the sleeve.

Whatever happens, full council & transport provider buy-in feels critical. Beyond a couple of buses (passing near but not through), St Mary's has scant links - and the surrounding roads are frequently heaving as it is.

Pie in the sky perhaps, but I hope there's an exploration into dusting off the old service rail line and popping a platform by the stadium.

Yeah, it's all pointing towards eye-watering figures in land and property acquisition, isn't it.

Get half-term Phil on it and who knows, it could be as much of a success as the city’s last waterfront commercial, leisure and entertainment hotspot, Town Quay.

The club and Solak should only be interested in trying to acquire the empty land adjacent to the Chapel Stand, which I guess is owned by the Coal Pension Fund, like some of the SMS land, when it was being cleared to build. That alone would probably cost around £6-7m to buy these days

I would hate to see more employment land lost to rows of flats. Expanding our stadium and increasing its immediate footprint, if possible, must be the first port of call.

But unless Solak gets his wallet out, it's not going to happen because of the club's existing debt.

A pocket of land was available opposite SMS a couple of years back and would have been great for club parking and more, but I don't think it sold, and the aggregate yard leased it.

Discussions between the club, ABP and Soton Council regarding the waterfront land have been going on for sometime.
The challenge there is finding somewhere close by or along the Solent to accommodate the primary cargo ie sea dredged aggregate and the vessels that carry the cargo.
It will happen but the timeline is expected to be a minimum 3-5 years.
Perhaps a shorter timeline may be possible with the adjacent small industrial estate with one site already cleared after the recent fire.

We aren’t regularly selling out.

Certainly it wasn’t until the tail end of last season that we were.

Even the end of the season wasn't I don't think prior to Ipswich. Bristol City had quite a few empties if I remember rightly.

Wasn't it mentioned at the fans forum last year too? Think they said then they hoped to give more info this year so hope it doesn't become a constant cycle of 'next year'.

Parsons needs to team up with Alan Shearer on this project. Someone with a high public profile and a history and love of the club should be involved in my opinion.

They could name it the Alan Parsons Project...

Can see an expanded Level 1 type building either on the demolished warehouse that burned down or across road somewhere either side of aggregate cement works.

The flats on gasworks site hasn't materialised so could Saints have a hotel there?

Need a station platform built nearby but that's never going to happen.

Could do with more parking maybe re fi the cruise parking near kendal street with wider access as take 1 hour to get out.

Loads of land here and there within docks/waterside area and derelict buildings so I suspect its got to be stuff fans would use before and after match, shops, eating, cinema, maybe those new type virtual golf thing or race track??

Stuff round Wembley is always busy even on non match days so that's the blue print to follow!!

The mega store could be yet another bar or eating place and a new shop where demolished warehouse were?

Depends how it's used once extended. Spurs make more from hosting events at their ground than during matchdays.

IF bigger names/acts can be attracted to play down south, then its definately an avenue worth looking at long term.

Extended chaple end and hotel by gas works for those big name gigs could work.

Im off to see Sex Pistols at Brixton jn December but they may not be around by the time St Mary's is 40,000 capacity entertainment venue!!

Dont think you can blame the Council too much as they really dont have money to invest themselves.
They need to get partners in who can stump up the cash.
Unfortunately there isnt a lot of spare cash floating around at the moment

They’re just too stupid to know what to do. 
 

Livenation have funded £100m of the new one going up in Cardiff for example. 
 

Get it built, get it sponsored and get it filled and they will reap the benefits to the local economy.

I think we would see a pretty heavy uplift in people through the door over a season
