VVD was a Rolls Royce of a player. That was evident from his first game, great defender who glided around the pitch with ease. Bella-K and Salisu were like cart horses, and even then best sent to the glue factory. Shame about ABK, obviously had potential. You don’t get in the Germany WC squad at 22 without having something about you. But equally Germany with the likes of ABK in their squad don’t get past the group stages. I think so - ABK and Salisu not even remotely similar, Salisu couldn’t control his feet but was a decent last ditch defender. ABK could glide past players, carry the ball up the pitch, and seemed a level above when he was on it. But it only lasted about 3 games unfortunately, which probably explains why he ended up with us.
LiberalCommunist Posted September 10 Posted September 10 Christ, they hype train is on full throttle! I hope the lad doesn't read this and just keeps his head down. Very impressed so far, but its been three weeks! And besides, who ever keeps Jack out of the match day squad gets a +2 Bonus, so his ratings are a little warped! 2
LegalEagle Posted September 10 Posted September 10 Based on what we’ve seen so far he’s a distance better than THB and the best centre back we’ve had since VVD. 2

I was thinking that - obviously a league down but can’t recall any of our centre backs dominating to anything like the same extent since VVD, who was exceptional. 1

CB Fry Posted September 11 Posted September 11 25 minutes ago, AlexLaw76 said: my god. Calm down These are the same people who go mad about players being "written off" after 3 games. Yeah, let's give him 3 games and start comparing him to one of the best CBs in world football of the last 2 decades. Funny how three games is plenty of evidence to make that kind of assessment. 1
MarkSFC Posted September 11 Posted September 11 The lad is decent, no question, and looks excellent for Us NOW, IN THIS LEAGUE. Whether that translates into PL standard we will only know if and when we go up. So far, 30m minus him for THB is looking ok....plus Abbot is yet to come in and I have a sneaky feeling we will be thinking he is better. 1

Bobsmith Posted September 11 Posted September 11 I agree we don't know how good he will be in the prem, but he was captain of a mid table bundesliga club so there is no reason why he wouldn't be a solid performer at prem level

Read carefully Fry and slow down. Firstly, I caveated my comment by saying “Based on what we’ve seen so far” i.e. a snapshot. Secondly, I said “since VVD”. I did not compare him to VVD.

I didn’t see a comparison - it said best we’ve had since VVD. Given that most CB’s we’ve had since him have been absolutely shite, it doesn’t seem that far fetched, even if a little early to judge. 1
Lighthouse Posted September 11 Posted September 11 TBF I’d never even heard of Kev two months ago but I knew he was better than Wes Hoedt. 1
Danbert Posted September 11 Posted September 11 Definitely better than Stephens and Bednarek. His distribution is poor though.

The rhetorical flourish you used is called "mentioned in the same sentence as..." which is basically comparing to that someone: because why else are you mentioning the other name? My point is it is a stupid comparison. If he keeps going like this Schlotterbeck could be the German making the most impact on Southampton since Hitler. 1

Juneau Posted September 13 Posted September 13 I was listening to some Nirvana and couldn’t get the chorus of Lithium out of my head for a Keven chant… I like it, Keven Schlotterbeck You won’t pass, Keven Schlotterbeck I love you, Keven Schlotterbeck He’ll kill you, Keven Schlotterbeck Yeah-yeah Yeah-yeah Yeah-yeah Yeah-yeah Yeah-yeah Yeah-yeah, yeah https://youtu.be/pkcJEvMcnEg?t=103&is=dtByhGG_iIEUOFZG 1
JohnnyShearer2.0 Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago Have to admit. Spors did well to get him. The fact that he's slotted in seamlessly and people have not moaned means he's been a great find. We have a 'mentality monster!' he could have wilted after conceding the own goal but didn't. NB. Please replace mentality monster with adjectives of your own choice.

Losing THB it was so important that we got a good CB signing in and he's proven himself more than good enough. Just imagine if we'd got that wrong and ended up with wood and Stephens at the back. 1

He also was reported as not being the replacement for THB so must have been in for someone else too
CB Fry Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago It feels like they were trying to get that Norwegian whose name I have now forgotten. Did the right thing by not just panic buying anyone.

Makes it even more important that we got his signing right given the alternatives (although maybe Abbott is reasonable at cb we may not find out.)

THB was good, but Schlotterbeck wins more in the air and the defence is better with him in it. Fantastic bit of business. And he’s not only better himself, but he’s made Stephens better too. Reminds me of how playing next to Fonte made Lovren better. Edited 8 hours ago by Midfield_General 2

I'm not sure he's a better individual player than THB but I think the defensive unit is stronger. If only because it allows Stephens to play on his preferred side.

Midfield_General Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago (edited) I just love the spine we’ve got now when everyone’s fit. Peretz > Schlotterbeck > Downes > Larin through the centre of the team is so strong for championship level. Then add other battlers like Bree, Stephens, JWP, Jander, Matsuki and we’re a physical match for anyone in this division. Azaz surprised me with how much he got stuck in up top on his own against the skates as well. We’re not a team of son-in-laws (tm) getting bullied anymore. Edited 8 hours ago by Midfield_General 1
SouthWalesSaints Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago Re the THB versus KS argument. Both very good players, both with different attributes. KS is better from open play defensively, but set pieces for and against THB is a better option. THB is better on the ball, although I’d argue the gap is getting smaller the more games go on. I do think that they’d be a brilliant pair, but we’ve got a great deal getting 25 million and KS it also helps that both Stephens and Wood are right footed so it takes them up a small notch. Hope we get promoted and re sign THB. I thought he was a great player and a great character. 3

Badger Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Wouldn’t be surprised to see a CB bid relaunched in January. We tried for both Falchener and Affengrubber before bringing in Abbot, and you wonder if he has Tonda’s confidence.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Depends which THB version we are talking about. The one post Jan window was exceptional, a bit better than this German. The one pre that was very poor. This guys been a solid 7 or 8 most weeks, THB had some stinkers.
