Sell JWP in January?

I'd pick him in DM alongside whichever of Romeu/Lemina/Hojbjerg has been least cack recently and get us back to shielding the defence and struggling to create chances, at least we know where we are with that and tend to win a few 1-0.

His family are based down here and he has a new baby so couldnt see him going to anyone other than BMouth. Could actually see him doing very well there ala Surman!

Like any of that matters. We'll do what its in our interests. It also assumes that JWP would turn down the opportunity of first team football which is ridiculous.

A player rated by Adkins, Pochettino, Koeman and Puel. Developing and doing well under them all. Then, like 90% of our squads, not good enough for 2 years.

People seem determined to throw away half our players even though we keep signings new ones and having the same problems. If you keep appointing poor managers, it isn't going to matter.

That excuse is not allowed for JWP. But JWP has not been bad since Koeman and Puel left., he has done well considering the games / mins he gets he out performs other players who play/ Have played in his position ( RM ). he could probs do with a few consecutive games tbf instead of the odd app here and there and never ever getting to full match fitness.

He really don't offer enough / not good enough defensively to play DM.

He's a bit of a waste of space, quite honestly, and so shouldn't really be in the team in any position. He's not even the great dead ball specialist everybody keeps saying he is. Whenever we get a free-kick in a scoring position just outside the opposition penalty area, he wastes it by kicking it a yard high and wide of the goal.

The problem is he is literally the jack of all trades, but not PL level of one (at best bottom half)

You can deploy him in CDM, and tbf whilst recently he has got stuck in, he still hasn’t got the defensive ability like Morgan and Cork had for example.

At CM you would think is his best position, and on paper it probably is, but he doesn’t have that box to box presence and the games seem to bypass him- feels like a headless chicken in that role.

RM/Winger- Too slow and can’t beat a man- I mean Tadic never had pace but he had quick feet and the flair to be effective- JWP doesnt suit it

If I am honest- 3 years ago I had high hopes that he would be a Number 10/ Central Attacking Midfielder in the mould of Dele Alli, or the way James Maddison is playing now, but barring the odd set piece he just didn’t live up to the hype.

I would sell for £25m- maybe he needs a new environment... I do feel like someone like Poch or Klopp may have been better for him potentially

how many free kick goals do you expect per season for a player who managed just 1.5 k mins?. He scored more free kicks last season than are best player Redmond got goals.. just saying like...….

But do you really need to beat a man on the wings? Beckham never beat any one in his time, yet was one the of best RM in history...…. im not saying JWP is any where near his level, but just using it as an example that its not mandatory, just likes its not mandatory to be able to pass and cross to be a EPL first team starter lol

JWP shielding the defence?

The other guy shielding the defence, him alongside doing the shuttling. He was becoming quite adept at it in the Final Days of Puel and finally found a position he was contributing, so of course Pellegrino decided he was a support striker.

Hence why i use Tadic as an example- JWP’s crosses aren’t as effective in open play

I actually agree with this. He may not be as ‘tough in the tackle’ as some would like but I think alongside someone physical it’s his best position. Doesn’t have the pace to beat players when he plays wide and isn’t a number 10 for me but still has better passing / shooting (and obviously set piece) ability than most of our midfielders

He’s got much more to his game than Romeu for example (and lemina when he has an off day - which is fairly common). If we play a 3 I would like to see how PEH, JWP and Armstrong do together. Linking the play between midfield and strikers has been an issue for some time. We often end up with the midfield too far apart from the strikers by playing 2 defensive minded players in there

People who say JWP isn't Premier League standard simply demonstrate why they don't hold coaching jobs in professional football. He's been playing top level football for 7 years, since he was 16 years old and still has a lengthy career in front of him. Someone suggested he could be sold for £15m. That sort of fee would only be met be another Premier League, so if it's thought he's of that value to another club, he's certainly worth keeping here. Fortunately, only a few people show such lack of appreciation for a player who's been here since he was 8 years old.

But he got no pace and cant dribble. and this is all that matters.

And that’s why for a team that has been at the top of the table in terms of crosses, we hardly score from them

and that is JWP / Bertrand fault? if the ball in is good, and it is not going in the back of the net it is the strikers fault / person on the end of the cross?

I mean Bertrand is currently are top creative player, like he was last season too...….

94 % of goals come from coners / indirect free kicks and from crosses from wide area's in the EPL.

Here is that thing Sainstweb don't like Facts and stats ready.

1st. Holebas 4 assist all from crosses.

2nd. Giroud 3 assists 2 from crosses 1 from a flick on from a cross.

3rd place assist in the league.... Anthony Knockaert 3 assist all from crosses.Luciano Vietto 3 assists all from a cross. Aguero 2 assist both from crosses. Abdoulaye Doucouré, all from crosses. Johann Berg Gudmund, Same all from crosses. Roberto Firmino, same crosses.

You seeing a pattern yet? amazing isn't it how many % of goals come from a cross into the box.. such a huge % of goals.

Leaving aside the rather loose definition of a cross, I don't recall many of our goals this season coming from crosses. Do you?

But lets run with your cute little thought experiment. Last season we attempted 800 crosses, 2nd in the league; yet scored a meagre 37 goals. If as you say virtually all goals come from crosses -other things being equal- we can't be very good at them if we're getting very little return from the sheer volume of crosses we're putting in. Now you might claim we miss a Pelle-type player. But anyone who's actually watched us play knows that is not the whole story.

A for effort as usual pal.

most of are goals are from crosses, most of the chances we create are from crosses, the lowest % of crosses in the team is Redmond who believe it or not has the least assists out of all are attacking players including the fall backs and yet his only assist ( in the cup ) came from what? Yep a cross.

last season we did do 800 crosses, we also missed 46 big chances from crosses, are highest cross completion % player last season and before was JWP yet he played less mins than every one ( 1521 mins game time only last season yet managed 8 assists and 3 goals in the league alone ), Redmond and Bertrand played 5.2 k + mins last season and Bertrand managed more assists than every one on the team last year, including Tadic. JWP was 2nd on assist yet played 3 k mins less than every one else and managed just 149 crosses in his time last season and also scored 2 free kicks ( more goals from free kicks than Redmond managed assists and goals..... yet Redmond is the better player to ppl on here :mcinnes: ) are cross completion is low, but JWP and Bertrand cross % is high and these two are the most creative players on the team, Redmond is the most direct player for us but is involved in less goals than JWP even though he played 3.7 k more mins last season and has 6 full games this season JWP has still created more chances than him.

looking good and being good are two different things, JWP and Bertrand are the most effective attackers we have.

JWP's dead ball technique is very good and it's clearly something he's worked on over the years. Anyone who's ever kicked a football would appreciate how difficult this seemingly simple skill is. Beckhams career was made largely on this attribute. He was so good at it not through natural talent alone, but through obsessive practice, staying behind after hours when his team mates were home and hosed. I wonder how much dedication some of our players are putting in.

As an academy product I'm a little disappointed that JWP is struggling to make the grade, I'm sure as "one of our own" fans would like him to succeed. If I was at the club since before I started shaving and trying my best to be a good player I'd be horrified by some of the spiteful comments some fans seem to deem OK to post about me. Many managers instruct their players to stay away from social media / forums. For good reason.

He's copied the technique to the point he can do a cracking tribute act, for sure.

However, Beckham regularly found the back of the onion bag and was a go-to guy under pressure (Simeone incident, notwithstanding). Beckham's ball striking is up there with the best ever.

JWP does a top, top, top near miss.

Not just free kicks, ball striking in general. Shouldn't JWP ping one in from 25 yards occasionally?

Beckham scored 62 goals in 265 Premier League games and got 80 assists. I haven't checked your free-kick stat but assuming it's correct that means 75% of his goals cake from open play.

JWP has 10 goals in 169 PL appearances and 19 assists.

I know Beckham played in a better team but we've been pretty decent for a fair chunk of JWPs PL career.

Yes, JWP aesthetically can "do a Beckham" but the comparison ends there.

Oh yeah defo 100 %, Beckham is a legend in the game, don't think another player will ever beat Beckham at set pieces.

You can check on the EPL website the top direct free kick scorer is David Beckham on 15 goals scored ( just want to add though, at same age, Beckham had only 2 free kicks scored in the league ), JWP is currently 40th in this list which is not to bad considering his lack of mins since we have been in the EPL.

But he will never beat him if he never gets the mins, His corners / In direct free kicks are not to close to Beckhams, but at the same time, I never see any one constantly out deliver JWP on set pieces in the league currently, even though he don't have much else to his game, this ability alone was enough to give Beckham a starting role in a great united team that won every cup going.

how will any one ever know how good he will be / can be when he has never had more than 1 game in a row, even when he has played well and been the best player on the pitch, he gets dropped for the next game any way, seems to be pretty demotivating to me.

Every one says in football you need a good solid run of games, most say 5 - 7 competitive games to reach full match fitness and sharpens. JWP has never had this in his time at SFC.

but either way, I personally for his own benefit think he should leave. ill be very sad if he does as I thought he would be the next Saints player to do a MLT and stay at Saints for ever.

I’d happily sell him if the right bid came in and not replace him. We’ve got a bloated squad as is that needs trimming.

Him or Davis could easily and we wouldn’t notice.

Agreed, but surely its better to sell Davis than a young player who can still improve loads on his overall game, if just given the right coaching and games.

Sell him only if we are going to replace him.

Difficult one. I don’t think we really need to replace JWP, we have a number of CM’s and tbh he’s simply not good enough. I’d rather we kept hold of Harrison Reed in all honesty but wouldn’t be upset if either left.

We do however need a RW (id personally give Gabbi a run out there), so I guess it comes down to what you consider his best position.

Talk of £25m is laughable really. If we got anything over £10-£15m for him I’d be surprised and very happy. Ridiculously overrated and would struggle to get in many championship teams imo.

He is nearly 24, has made over 200 appearances, and is one of the most "coached" players I've seen ie. that right to left swinging corner/free/pass, which is just about his entire kit bag. JWP is not going to improve loads! I'd still keep him as a squad player and if an offer did come in during the summer, well and good. Would be a good outcome for Club and player - he needs a change of scenery.

How the fu k do you think Saints would sell Steven Davis!? He will be 34 in January. Difficult to see anyone BUYING JWP either, maybe we can offload him to his spiritual home when the Blue Few return to the Championship.

I'd be starting JWP personally.

Careful, you are not allowed to say such things on Sainstweb forum, not cause its against the forum rules, but just because the people that don't attend games and only watch match of the day highlights don't like him.

VectisSaint. I am sure he can go back to the Scottish league and retire, or you never know drop down to the championship or some thing. If I remember rightly, we did turn down two approaches for JWP before the season started, 2 diff teams and both are currently above us in a table, and unlike Saints fans, both Watford and Burnley fans wanted him to join them respectfully.

Amazing thing is, that its only Saints fans that don't rate him yet in tabloids and stuff, he was one of the key players for us last season and help keep us up more than Redmond, yet is shat on by the club and its fans.

Why do you mention Redmond in every single post about JWP? Bizarre.

Why don't you just contribute to the topic, I clearly do not mention Redmond in every post, read through them on just this topic alone and you will see I don't.

The way I see it is, deep in your head, right at the back, there is this little voice, this little voice is telling you that you need to some how try make others feel small cause you bring no creditable evidence that says Redmond/ Moi are / can assist more than JWP who is already and still ahead of both and yet has had just 1 start and has not featured on the team for 6 games now and still has contributed more than both wide players that currently start In the team, not only this, but are left back has contributed more than are wingers, even are 2 central mids have at least scored a goal and provided assists. but its ok. we will just like last season, carry on doing the same crap hoping to get different results and then blame all the players who hardly played and who performed better than first team starters yet the starters keep playing and playing and playing, and still we fail to score of any thing these wide players provide with the brilliant mesmerising dribbling and running they do.

some questions for you

what is the quickest way to get the ball into the penalty area?

What is the least direct and time consuming way to get the ball into the area?

how many free kicks and corners in the league have been scored from?

How many defensive splitting dribbles we seen so far from all teams in the league?

again same question but pass in stead of dribbling?

Why do we have some of the biggest central defenders in the league, push them up for corners, yet have the worsts corner / free kick takers trying to provide a cross for them to try score of while we keep one of the best set pieces takers in the league off the team?

If you ran right at a wall and smashed your face of it, how many times will you keep trying to do it before you try go round the wall or over it or even under it?
