very simplistic view of the game. yes you need goal scorers but if you effectivley play with 10 men you are always at a disadvantage. Perhaps there would have been a few less goals scored if we didn't have him in the side, but someone working harder defending from the front, chasing things down, making runs to turn defences might actually have reduced the goals against considerably and maybe we would have gained mroe points overall. We will never know, but I don't put our survival down to Stern John that's for sure.

 

One more thing, we didn't need him - Rasiak offered just as much if not more and his additional wages have been a millstone round our neck (not the only one I know) that have dragged us into this financial mess. Not his fault of course.

First bit of potential good news for a while.John should score a lot of goals in league 1.Would be delighted if we could keep him.His goals could have made the difference last season possibly as we had enough chances in games but couldn't put the ball in the net!?

I know I should think like this (football is in th enow not the future) but if we play Patterson all next season we will be devloping and putting in the shop window a player in just the same way we did with McGoldrick. That million has saved us if only for a while. If we snub Patterson in favour of John all we do is slow his progression down and risk him leaving for peanuts before he shines elsewhere. Patterson will be on peanuts and rest assured the new buyer is not going to have cash to splash.

Out of interest do you think Wotton will prove to be an asset next season. I don't think I could have been more slating of him over the last 12 months, but after his showing at Bristol City I felt just a little bit of sympathy for him.

I'd have Wotton over Spiderman, purely because Wotton puts his foot in a bit, whereas Spiderman brings nothing I can see to the team. Truth be told though they are both just terrible.

John would be absolute quality in League 1. He is lazy but no way near as bad as Rasiak, he is the only player that can hold it up and the only one that can shoot properly. John with a few nippers playing off him would work well.

McLaggon - Completely unproven and rarely got off the bench in a team which finished 2nd bottom of CCC.

 

MS - Aside from his disturbing injury record, he contributed nothing to either offensive or defensive play last season. Some reliable, but forgettable passing and a decent first touch seem enough to excite a few on here.

 

Gillett - A good player, but his passing lets him down at times.

 

Holmes - Spent most of the season in the physio room. Good crossing but very slow.

 

Lallana - Playing off John may suit him, but he didn't deliver last season.

That line up has injury problems and lacks pace and ideas IMO. We've basically lost the decent players from the team who got relegated last year and now you're expecting the players left to reach the playoffs, which will need automatic promotion form with our -10. Rasiak is far lazier than John, completely lightweight and contributes a lot less to the overall team play.

 

John can score a goal out of nothing, and his supposed 'laziness' is more because he is intelligent and knows where the goal is. A lot different to the headless chicken that is Marek Saganowski.

 

The team i picked would easily be good enough for league 1 (remember we are a league 1 club now)

Best news out of the club for ages - guaranteed goals and his hold up play is brilliant (and much better than Euell or Rasiak)

It's not a case of being in denial about L1. I honnestly think last seasons teams was midtable L1 quality at best. We've lost DMG, Surman, Skacel and possibly Size and Davis, who were some of the better players last season, and you expect us to be producing automatic promotion form. :-s

 

You slate Saganowski, but ignore the fact that John can't score to save his life without him. I agree that John is a decent player and I hope he stays. Gillett, James and Lallana are good too, but they need to be surround by players who are as good or better if we are to be a decent L1 side. Holmes, MS and McLaggon are not the answer.

 

Mclaggon showed glimpses of tallent. There is a reason he only made a couple of fleeting sub appearances. He is nowhere near CCC quality, which does NOT mean he will be one of the best players in L1.

 

I also cannot believe just how gullible some people are RE: Schneiderlin. Someone starts a rumour that Arsenal, Fulham, Pompey etc. are after him and some people are convinced this is true, despite what they see on the pitch. Last season he got 0 goals, 0 assists, won 1 header and never tracked back or tackled and scarcely put any work in. Please explain to me how that makes him a good player, because I really am at a loss.

Looks like Sheff Utd have bought Tommy Smith from Watford (for about £1.8m) according to the BBC) so they may come back for Rasiak now they have plenty of readies.

So what would be our team next season?

 

Davis, Murty, Mills, Perry, Thomas, Schneiderlin, Wotton, Lallana, Holmes, Rasiak and John.

 

Subs: Lancashire, Saga or Thompson, James, Gillett, Bialkowski

 

Or do we get two more subs this season? >>> 2 from Gobern, Thomson, Molyneux, Pulis, White, McLaggan or Saga/Thompson

 

Saga/Thompson decision depends on whether we sign him and if he is any good!!

 

Not that I expect us to keep all 3 of John, Saga and Rasiak, but if we do keep all of these players we wouldn't have a bad chance of catching up the 10 points quickly and making a good challenge! :)

Surely we still want players with proven track records...

Out of all these - I feel Stern would buckle down and look the most interested/bothered.

Followed by BWP, Euell, Saga in that order and I feel Rasiak wouldn't even try (even though on paper he should be the best)

Stern John is probably past it did not do well at Bristol City last season but Rasiak scored a few at Watford.

 

 

Dont think either of them will stay especially Rasiak

One things for sure without a proven goalscorer on board league 1 is where we will stay or worse, we need either Raziak or Stern I cant see Raziak being willing to play league 1 football and Saganowski just doesn't cut it as a proven goalscorer (1 very good half season to earn a contract and then nowt to speak of) so we have to hope we can afford stern and that he wants to stay

I would expect, provided he was any good tonight, that AP will be offering him a contract pretty soon, esp bearing in mind Pilchard's training report from yesterday !

But FFS! He's missed some total sitters with a skill the even BWP found hard to emulate

 

Agree with this. He's a journeyman and never done much as most other clubs seem to have discovered.
