First time I've seen him and he looks nippy, shame he missed they sitter but I fancy him to be our star of the season.

Anyone see the ghost he saw 2nd half? He won the ball and had a breakaway against two Heart players, He looked up and curled the ball forty yards like he was looking at a ghost and only when the ball rolled out he puts his hands up to say sorry, sorry to who as nobody was within 50 yards of him.

strange one that!

Also I enjoyed Davis waving to the chapel at the start of the game, superstitious or another ghost?

Mills was for sure our poorest player playing far too centre of pitch giving us no width and compressing the play on the right side crowding out Lallana.

We scored two quick goals remember as soon as Gobern came on for him and we had width and room for Lallana and Murty to operate down the right.

Think Holmes is first choice on the left TBH. Agree about the width, especially since Lallana has had tendency to go narrow on the right. We need one natural wide player, at least.

Are you sure? I can't think of anything worse to be honnest. Holmes is a decent enough player (when all the Kings horses and all the king men put him back together) but a left footed player with no pace on the right?

It never works. Burley tried Surman and Skacel on the right. Both better wingers than Holmes, but neither had any impact. Then who could forget Hammill, Euell and Wright playing on the left... *shudder*

Fwiw I thought mills played bloody well.

I wouldn't go so far as to say MOM but he had a tidy game, gave balance down the left and worked hard with enthusiasm.

He looks as though he could make a good left side with Harding and also cover him in case of injury.

The right side is more problematical, Murty looks a certainty for right back but the wide right position needs looking at. Lallana is a bit of an enigma and I think has work to do on his awareness and positional play to nail down the position. It could be an in and out season for him unless he steps up his game.

Yeah I agree. Left looks pretty sorted especially if Holmes gets back in the mix. Lallana no doubt has quality but I don't think right is where he should be. Apart from Thompson (who i'm not convinced should be a starter), who exactly do we have? Lloyd James people say is better in the centre. Which brings another question to mind - why was he left out and would you even play him??

Your opinions would be welcome!

Lallana poses the same problem as there was with MLT (AL is no MLT, I hasten to add, at least not yet). Alan Ball is the only one who got it right by playing Matty in the middle, behind the strikers, and tell the rest to give him the ball. But that was when Matty was a mature player. Lallana isn't yet.

You will have to sacrifice something if you play AL, but watching the game today I accepted that. If we want an out and out rightwinger, why not acquire one. With AL you get something different, so let's not try to make him into what he isn't.

The alternative is to play a 4-3-1-2 formation which probably will sacrifice width and antagonise people. I don't think he is ready for that responsibility yet.

Are you sure, I know we have had a habit of playing left siders on the right and vice versa but I'm sure Holmes is a left winger

Sorry my c*ck up. I meant Holmes on the left is still my first choice over Mills and Lallana on the right (who doesnt have natural width). Left midfield has been a problem ever since the one-man-show that was gareth bale left. We've made things worse by wasting the likes of Skacel as LB and playing strikers -BWP etc- as wingers. Surman's departure has only added to the problem. With Holmes injured more often than he's fit and McLaggon and Gobern still learning the ropes, its a position that could be looked at. Hopefully, Mills will do a job, though some natural, scary pace wouldn't go amiss (given there's not much of it elsewhere in the team).

With the rich new owner and a manager with a top 2 position in his sights I will be very very dissapointed if we don't buy a better player than Holmes to play on the left.

Has he signed his contract yet?

Don't see what's holding it up, as it was drawn up a while ago.

I asked the same question last week, and nobody seemed to know the answer then either.

I think he must have the new contract for the following reasons:

When Murty, Stern, etc, could not play in earlier friendlies (alledgedly because of insurance reasons as they were not signed up at Saints) Fish was playing.

Fish has been given a squad number. Stern, who has yet to sign his contract was not given one (neither was Murty, obviously).

So I am sure he has signed but we just haven't been told about it for some strange reason.

I have another question though: What numbers did Stern and Murty wear today? (I would guess Stern was 14?)

Mills, Harding and Holmes have the left side pretty much sorted. Certainly Mills and Harding were solid and not without invention today and it's not an area I'd be much concerned about this season. As long as we have two of those three fit then we should be OK.

Right side is more of a problem. I think Murty may have done enough today to get the RB slot. He still looks fat and unfit but his cross for our goal was great. We've missed that quality. Maybe James can fill in in front of him and defensively that would be OK - I'd wonder if it had enough creativity though.

Still leaves where to fit in Lallana though. He's definitely quality and especially in this league. He can create chances and deserves to be in the mix but frankly at the moment I'd take a good team performance over his sporadic glimpses of talent. As he progresses we may need to accommodate him but he's not there yet.

Murty was Number 2 I think? As a friendly though I don't think the squad numbers were used? To be honest I only used the numbers when referring to the hearts players - incidentally their numbers 9, 10 and 7 all looked quality.

Spot on. I thought they had that side of the pitch covered nicely between them.

I thought he had a good game today, as did Harding, Murty and Gillet.

I have always thought Fish had something about him. His loan spell last season seems to have done him the world of good. With one more game to be played I will be interested to see the team picked for next season. If it is something like today I will be hoping for a similar performance. AP seems to be having a good effect on the players and long may that continue.

Amazing how odd some people see things. Mills was outstanding and stuck to the left wing, linking up well with Harding and showing good ability to run at people. Hope we can keep that left side partnership going.

Watching Mills today I thought he'd progressed hugely in the last 12 months. Definitely one for the future as long as he's blooded in carefully. Thought Murty was excellent and Lallana obviously thrives off space and a bit of confidence. Rasiak was class when he came on but it was Mills who caught my eye if only because he seems to have come on so much. Don't understand the fuss about Holmes who is at best average.

Absolutely right about Mills. I saw him in a pre-season friendly at Exeter, 2 years ago and whilst he played well, he looked like a little boy. He has certainly come on in the 3 games I have seen this season and obviously the loan at S****horpe has done him a lot of good.

I must say, if he does move, to be frank - he's a pillock.

I very much doubt he'll play for wolves, he's no where near ready for the prem yet.

Money calling again if it's true i guess.

Well thats right.

IF this is true I wonder what McCarthy is basing this signing on ?

He has played a handfull of games for us and a few for S****horpe or Scarboro or whoever it was (;) )......hardly good grounding for the premiership !

McCarthy seems to like buying 'Potential' though, Kightly is a good example. I still hold the opinion that Mills will not get a game though.

Not sure how we get 700k if he's out of contract though? Unless Wolves have agreed to pay us up in front to stop it going to a tribunal.

I hope this isn't true, but again we can blame Pinnacle for this - he should have signed his contract weeks ago. Morons.

I'd be surprised and a tad disappointed if Mills joined Wolves. He's only played a handful of games for us and I can't see him getting anywhere near their first-team should he leave. I'm of the opinion that he'd be better off signing a new deal with us, playing regularly and improving his all round game in the lower leagues. I just can't see the point in going to a Premiership team to sit in the Reserves.

Not sure how we'd be able to get 750K either, unless Wolves have agreed to pay that amount to avoid the hassle of going to a tribunal. I'm under the impression that we'd be due compensation for the players development as Mills has come through our Academy. Anyone know otherwise?

Anyway, I'm hoping that this is just a rumour, as I think Mills could be a very useful player for us this season. It would be a shame if he left, but if he does go then so be it. I think he may end up regretting it in a few years time should he leave though.

If there is just one dot of truth in this rumour, which I sincerely doubt, I think Fish should have a chat with his brother Matt about the shortcomings of leaving Saints for life as a reserve in the Prem.

If thats the case why was he in the starting eleven today? AP is working towards the team to put out against Millwall and would not have started with a player leaving in a few days

To pursuade him that his immediate future is with Saints, and I would hope it worked.
