saintray Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 He is obviously trusted by Mr leibherr? so that is good enough for me, sounds like a good businessman and a keen sports fan. Good appointment i say and it looks like everything is finally falling into place bit by bit. Can't wait for the start of the season!! dellgirl Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 A very good positive statement of intent,no whistles,no bells but an underlying sense of stability and purpose....I like it a great deal,we are in good hands at last thank goodness. once_bitterne Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 If Cortese is giving up a high ranking job with a major bank then that is a good indication that Liebherr isn't going to be running the club on a shoe string. On takeover day the official o/s article from Begbies said the takeover had been completed by.... and then had some company name that I can't remember now. Does anyone know if this ltd company is registered in the UK or Switzerland?
Doctoroncall Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 I wonder if he has some useful contacts from his previous roles that he can now call upon to help move the team and club forward... Toadhall Saint Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 I didn't really like the part where ML states that if Cortese ****s off, so will he. I don't think he said that now did he - more along the lines of ML wouldn't have been interested if Cortese wasn't going to be part of the board room following the takeover. Wildgoose Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Sounds excellent to me. Very sound, sensible and considered appointment. At last it seems we really are going to be run in a professional and first class way. I really don't care if it takes a bit of time to build the club and team back to where want to be, the journey has started. By the way, came across a good quote today which may be relevant to us on here "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." - Winston Churchill

Saint Fan CaM Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Good read - impressive words and cannot be disappointed at this time with the appointment or indeed the general policy. I find ML and Cortese to appear very professional indeed. We have a good manager and there are some early signs that he will be backed in a manner that will return us to the Prem as soon as reasonably practicable. Words are cheap however and while I am hopeful for the future, I will reserve judgement until real evidence of a full and proper team rebuilding process materialises before jumping on the happy clapper bandwagon. Years of mistrust and underambition under the Lowe regime has led me to be cautionary of bright new dawns - sorry if that offends any softies out there, but I want to see evidence of improvement before casting a full judgement either way. Mustapha Fag Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 CaM, if you cant see the improvements at the club in this short space of time i guess you will have to stop looking Theyve have said right from the start that they will build slowly and steadily, infact i seem to remember a statement of build along the lines of QPR, that took over a season to get anywhere near right Sorry mate but quick spending was never on the cards so deep breathe and hold on

Wes Tender Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 A new Chairman with a background in Banking, who says that the Club will be run as a business..........now, where have I heard that before? Ah, but there is a big difference here. In this case, that ex-banker is not spending his own money. He might obviously feel a moral obligation to spend our benefactor's money wisely and not profligately, but he doesn't need to pause over every pound spent and wonder whether he can afford it personally, does he? dune Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 A new Chairman with a background in Banking, who says that the Club will be run as a business..........now, where have I heard that before? Comparing Nicola with Lowe isn't really appropriate. Lowe was a small time Nursing home owner that saw Saints as a good way of feathring his own nest. Nicola on the other hand is a trusted friend of Marcus Liebherr who will make the decisions that will realise Mr Liebherrs ambitions.

Wes Tender Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Anyway, the first rule of any successful business is that the customer is king. There's another area where I'm sure there will be a difference between this ex-banker and the last one, as the last incumbent didn't know that first rule, or if he did, he ignored it. Chez Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Is a banking background, allbeit looking after customers involved in sport, really the kind of experience required to successfully run a football club? wild-saint Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 The other point that slightly worries me is that NC convinced ML to buy the club. Now that doesnt soud like someone who bought the club for the Kudos of having a succesful footy club to watch. If NC convinced ML to buy the club then does this mean the reason he bought it was because they feel there could be a good ROI
yorkiesaint Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 A professional appointment by an effecient reigm. I don't see this as an appointment, it is clear that Cortese IS the regime. ML is just going to be the financier with no clear role at the club, other than to take the profit Cortese has promised him when he sells the club. The way I see it we all might as well forget Liebherr even exists. The club is now run by Oldknow and Cortese.

Secondly, all the actions that have been made so far have all been in the same vein as previous attempts to sort the club out (aka Wilde). We can be thankful that ML has saved the club from oblivion etc etc. However, for me the key is in the improvements made in the team. Without investing in the team and the manager getting the tactics right, the results on the pitch will not change. And if the results don't improve from what we witnessed last season, then the feel good honeymoon period will be over for many supporters as quick as you can say "no better than Lowe". The club are moving in the right direction sure, but the proof of the pudding HAS to be shown out on the pitch and that's what I am waiting for. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Let's wait and see how he does but on the face of it NC looks like a top quality appointment , although bankers do have a somewhat tarnished reputation these days . With Markus Liebherr probably taking a limited interest in the day to day running of the club , Mr Cortese is in effect one of the most powerful men in this club's long history - a personal friend of the owner (of whom I guess we won't see much of) and with no shareholders to answer to makes him 'Mr Saints' from now on . I heard somewhere recently that the average football club has the turnover of your local supermarket - they're not really big business in the big scheme of things so for NC to give up a lucrative position in a major bank to run little old SFC may mean ML has had to bung a lorry load of cash in his direction as compensation . If NC convinced ML to buy the club then does this mean the reason he bought it was because they feel there could be a good ROI Doubtless but the only way to achieve a good ROI would be a swift return to the premiership where the value of our club will far exceed the 12 million paid for it. Either way we're going up so I'm not too fussed and if we can do it while remaining a sure-fire going concern then all the better for our future as we won't be mired with debt when our "sugar daddy" pulls the plug. yorkiesaint Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Don't get me wrong, I'm generally pleased (so far) with developments at the club. yet it's important to get clear who is doing what, and not get carried away with some kind of euphoric badnwagon (after all, we have been there before!). People are saying that Leibherr has appointed Cortese and that it's a good move. It seems to me more resonable that Cortese and Oldknow decided to buy the club, Cortese said 'i know a friend who'll give us the money' and he duly did. Cortese has been running the club since the buyout but it's only announced today. It was convenient for them to let fans think a billionaire was going to come in, in order to sell season tickets, drum up media interest etc. Is Liebherr even on the board? It's all just a bit of subtle and clever manipulation which leaves a sour tinge in my mouth..
