Saints to sign 2 players today

Raynes was being monitored by Liverpool and WBA according to the player profiles on their official site. Pilkington is a strange one though as he only made his debut in January.

Just been told by a reliable source connected to the selling club that we are buying 2 players from Stockport County.

Michael Raynes a defender and Danny Pilkington a midfielder. They travelled down today and should pass medicals tomorrow .

So how can they sign today?

FF - on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being "put your mortgage on it") how do you rate your source?

Raynes - injury history not more than 25ish games in a season so sounds like a promising and experienced youngster as cover for Thomas/Perry which pushes Olly back into emergency cover category while he learns what football really is about - wise move.

Pilkington - would hope he is a wide midfield player where we do need cover. Would still want to see a wise old head or two coming in.

I hope Lancashire does learn his craft properly! I remember seeing him a couple of years back and he looked potentially the real deal! shame to see his confidence shattered, hope he bounces back!

Stockport are in Administration so as we well know, they are likely to be selling their best players. Pilkington could be one for the future, but Raynes appears to be injury prone. As its strikers we need, maybe Pardew will look at Peter Thompson. Prolific scorer in Irish football, didn't too much last season for Stockport and was out for half the season with a serious chest infection, but fit since April. At 25, may have the maturity AP is looking for.

So much for experience, then. One is 19; the other is 21. I distinctly thought Pards wanted a bit of experience - there are so many coded references to having too many youngsters in his interviews.

Raynes is 21 but has already made 130 appearances. Centre Back in the Claus mould rather than the Jaidi mould.

(Just as an aside, it's nice to be talking about potential signings again not board rooms, shares and takeovers)

Isn't it so weird that we don't hear anything until the last moment anymore!!

Which is nice. Shows the Club is acting professionally. Also a blessing to see the end of 'I have been told', 'my contact informs me', 'I have it on very good authority' twaddle! Facts, we want facts....oh OK a little bit of gossip as well!

Ollie and a few others need to go on loan somewhere where they can regain confidence and get more experience without the pressure of expectations that always comes here.

Good news.

Still a bit fretful about our options up-front though...

I remember when we went after Prutton and Notts Forest had our bid on the table for most of the closed season. The only reason we got to hear about it, was from the selling club trying to move the price up.

Seen a fair bit of Raynes playing for County at this level he is a quality CB, & has also filled in for County all across the back four & has also filled in in midfield when its been required. He is a good pro & a good leader on the pitch(is team captain & club captain), would be a good acquisition. As for Pilikington as said don't know much about him but he's scored a few in pre-season & if he's half as good as his brother was for county then he may well turn out to be a good signing too.

Brother of Anthony then is he?

If you can't attract the championship level palyers (which we've been struggling to do tbf)...then the next best move is to sign the best players at this level...who also have a chance to improve and play at an even higher level.

Raynes is v good btw. Remember seeing an article on him a year or 2 ago as one of the lower leagues ''best prospects''.

So how can they sign today?

Sorry I cut and pasted an e mail that was written last night. So they travelled down yesterday and should sign today.

Jusrt passing on something from an impeccable source who has connections to County. Can't see why it wouldn't be true but as we all know after this week until the ink is dry on the contract.........
