niceandfriendly Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 (edited) Won (almost) everything today, along with Trotman. You've got to say Pardew has totally sorted our defence. We won every header at the back. I can't remember the last time that happened. No signs of a lack of fitness from Jaidi either. I thought he hadn't played much football recently? Played well for the full 90 minutes. Seems to be a great signing. Edited 19 September, 2009 by niceandfriendly for Hopkins

niceandfriendly Posted 19 September, 2009 Author Share Posted 19 September, 2009 There's stats on headers won vs headers lost on each player? Where? He won more than he lost, by a long way.
Smirking_Saint Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 He missed a few, won a few, looked a bit tired, gave a few dodgy free kicks away. TBF though, looks pretty solid, will be a lot better when match fit. Best we could hope for, IMO.
70's Mike Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 He really didn't win everything today. Check the stats. your right he did not win everything BUT what they won was the balls that did not really matter. judge defenders by how busy KD was and today was one of his easier days. Jaidi and Trotman are the type of defenders who say the ball may go past me, the player may go past me BUT not both

beatlesaint Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 I think he will be at his best if he just stands in the middle and gets his head to everything that comes into the box. When he was a third of the way up the pitch it seemed to take him a lifetime to get back into position.....in fact a couple of times he turned in installments !! But having said that, he's bound to be rusty and I think he will prove to be a great signing.
Chez Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 jesus some of you are a little harsh. He was terrific. He won everything in the air and showed exactly what we have been missing over the last few years - a ****ing brick **** house. I was actually surprised by his fitness and pace. At brum last year he was clumsy and as slow as can be (but still impressive I might add) but I thought he looked composed on the ball and was never done for pace. He did give away some free kicks but I'm happy with that. We need a centre back that gets stuck in, ruffles a few feathers and makes life tough for strikers. If he gives a few cheap free kicks away we are going to have to live with that. Besides he and Trotman snuffed out all of the free kicks any way. Great debut, great signing. I know many of you love Perry, but the difference between the two is startling.
John Boy Saint Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Ditto with Chez My thoughts on Jaidi and Trotman on the final whistle were that Jewsons & Mixamate have finally found their way to SMS with the bricks & mortar delivery. SFC Forever Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 He showed a lot of composure and was also busy telling others where to go and who to mark which also helped. Smirking_Saint Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 He did ok, but was blowing out of his arse after 30 mins. Agree. But TBF, the defence looked solid, we never looked in any trouble. Harding was the weak link today when we were under the cosh. But maily that was because lallana let them double up on him. I was comfortable with the back 4 today, for the first time in a long time. I would like to see us put a bid in for trottman, he could be a V good player given the right coaching. I also think that was why Mills was sub. Yeah perhaps, Lala did him no favours mind, but then that was expected. He is not a winger. Mills did well when he came on, he delivers a good corner, unlike Lala, although i think AL did do well with his Free kick deliveries. Mills gives us balance, and IMHO every team needs balance. Give it to Ron Posted 20 September, 2009 Share Posted 20 September, 2009 There was a Killer moment in the first half....the ball was played to the 18 yard line just by Jaidi who crashed in to a Yeovil forward taking the ball clean as a whistle leaving him in a heap! Thats the Jaidi zone and a very rare crunching tackle witnessed from a Saints centre half since we lost Michael.

Toadhall Saint Posted 20 September, 2009 Share Posted 20 September, 2009 Thought he played ok - the pairing of him and Trotman will get better IMHO, just need to sort out the who attacks the ball and who holds - that will come with practice. By mid way in the 2nd half Yeovil were just trying to score with 20+ yard shots - that tells me our defence did well.

Professor Posted 20 September, 2009 Share Posted 20 September, 2009 To be fair, if Jaidi won every ball, he'd be playing in the Prem, not released by Brum. He didn't always win the headers, but he was a solid presence even if the attacker got his head in first. He was slightly off the pace on running back, but his positional sense and experience compensated. He definitely makes the defence look a lot more confident and capable. A great signing for Div1 and he will improve as he gets fitter.
The Kraken Posted 20 September, 2009 Share Posted 20 September, 2009 I thought it was a good debut, and certainloy he and Trotman looked very comfortable together. They did give away a few cheap fouls but I guess that's what comes with the type of players they are. I think the biggest highlight for me is that our defence shouldn't get bullied to the extent that we have in the past. Any striker playing against those two will know that they've been in a game, something we haven't been able to say for some time. I'll be very happy if these two can stay injury free and forge a strong partnership together, I think it's what our future success will be built upon. Robsk II Posted 20 September, 2009 Share Posted 20 September, 2009 Best starting debut I've seen for a while at Saints, without a doubt. he wasn't perfect, but he seemed pretty bloody good for this level, and DID win the vast majority of balls he contended with - which were a good number, too. yellow&blue Posted 20 September, 2009 Share Posted 20 September, 2009 Best pair of no nonsense defenders that we have had in a long while. Plenty of height for defending set pieces especially after the goals conceded this season. I find it difficult to see how Chris Perry would get in the side in comparison to Jaidi and Trotman. Chez Posted 20 September, 2009 Share Posted 20 September, 2009 I'd lie to add that he didn't just win headrs, when he won them they went bloody miles. Absolutely I think it was Big sam who said he was the best header of a football he's ever worked with, can see why based on y'days efforts. I'm quite excited by his addition if im honest, he's still more than good enough to play top half championship when fully fit.
Super_Uwe Posted 21 September, 2009 Share Posted 21 September, 2009 The game on Sat was a perfect 90 min run out for Jaidi. A few silly fouls in the first half but overall it was a walk in the park for him - Yeovil certainly didn't give him too much to worry about. Did what he had to do with ease. A very encouraging start and I agree with other comments on the partnership with Trotman; it looks very promising. Thankfully the work permit issue never raised its head at the last minute! Foxstone Posted 21 September, 2009 Share Posted 21 September, 2009 All told, Jaidi is a great signing. Notwithstanding his experience and ability, he is an absolute mountain of a man who would intimidate any centre-forward placed up against him. He had a good game on Saturday and once he has regained his match fitness, I am sure these will turn from good games into great games for us. eurosaint Posted 21 September, 2009 Share Posted 21 September, 2009 I think that a couple of the scrawny little Yeovil lads took one look at 'Dellboy & Radhers' and muttered "Oh Sh#t" ! The match on Saturday reminded me of many games I saw last season where one team was full of dainty youngsters playing a neat passing game but getting nowhere and the other was fearsome and resolute with a 'thou shall not pass' mentality. Fortunately we have reversed roles since then, giving us a much better chance of winning games !
Chez Posted 21 September, 2009 Share Posted 21 September, 2009 What happens if and when we come up against pace? Sit the defence on the 18 yard box? I've been thinking along the same lines, but I think we just should just live with it. What would you prefer: conceding one or two perfecty executed free play goals due to lack of pace at the back or conceding a continuous supply of goals, from set pieces and long balls, due to a lack of height at the back? I thought Yoevil offered a reasonably pacey attack and it wasn't a problem. When we are 1-0 up with ten minutes to go and we are up against three big forwards and the opposition are lumping it forward, who would you prefer Perry or Jardi? It's a no brainer.
