yeah maybe a time to rest a couple players... give jaidi, lambert, connolly, lallana a rest but have them on the bench in case...

...possibly have papa waigo, Paterson, Thomas and mills given some game time.

Wonder what kind of a croud we'd get to that one??

Should be careful though, remember when we played torquay at home??

As always, play the best team you have. Messing about with resting players is a recipe for disaster. If professional players cannot play games twice a week then they should find a new job. It is bad enough that we will have to shuffle the pack to deal with loanees. The best way to be a successful is to get into the winning habit every game.

Although most of their points deduction was due to unethical practices or something, their attempt at admin to boot probably high lighted a seedier side of behind the scenes football and helped seal our fate without any chance of appeal

Plus some horrendous defeats on their spacky placky pitch .... DESTROY DESTROY (but no probs with them fully cleansed ggetting promoted back into the L2)

In an ideal world, Pards has a couple of signings lined up who are suitable replacements for Lambert, Hammond and Jaidi. If one or two of them were to join on the first, they could be registered in time for the FA Cup match.

I'd play Mills instead of Harding if nothing else.

People have said they expect Luton to bring a couple of thousand fans to SMS for this one. But there were only 2500 at Kenilworth road tonight!! (That includes the Rotherham fans too).

If thats all they get at home I wouldn't expect more than 1k.

What happened to the alleged 30k they took to wembley for the JPT last year?

Some of you haven't got a clue. Luton will be a very tough test! Resting too many players may prove dangerous. LUTON WILL BE NO MUGS........they have beaten very decent opposition in Rotherham and Rochdale in the cup so far BOTH of those sides are challenging in the league below us. Some of you are getting too c-o-c-k-y!

How does this compare to the financial gain for promotion this season?

It's all about the potential rewards compared to the likelyhood of winning them. I wouldn't put all our eggs in the promotion basket when we can make a lot of money and fun in the 2 cups we are still in. Hopefully we can bring in reinforcements in January so we wont have to prioritise games so much.

Sometimes its not about resting players but preventing the risk of getting important players injured.

Loose our main goal scorers for 4 weeks of the league and we will be struggling again. While the cup run's are nice and give us a chance of some silverware or days out the club will only move forward if it pushes up through the leagues.

Like others have said, giving Papa, Pato, Mills and Thomas a run out might not be a bad idea as they are the ones that we expect to replace our top players from the subs bench so they should be up to the task.

I dont think we have a strong enough youth squad to throw any of them in though.

Bloody hell that's a long time without a non-league side!

We have to take Luton very seriously. They are only a non-league side through circumstance, not ability. Only player I'd rest would be Lambert who's looking increasingly knackered.

By the time we play Luton we may have other players in the squad to consider as the transfer window will be open.

I very much doubt we'll be signing anyone in time to play in this game. The window will only have been open 24 hrs and I doubt the administration staff at the FA are working New Years Day, in any case.

Ordinarily I would say rest 'key' players for this game but looking at the fixture list this would mean some players going 11 days without a game i.e. Dec 28th (Boxing Day) to Jan 9th.

So, whilst sticking by the principle that we should concentrate 100% on the league until it's mathematically impossible to reach the play-offs, I would put out a strong team for this game so that players retain match fitness.

On another note, non-league sides always get decent media coverage when they reach the third round. So our tie is likely to now have a higher media profile than if Rotherham had gone through and it was L1 v L2. I know that as a L1 side we shouldn't expect to be making headlines, but nonetheless I've been a little surprised that the excellent rebuiilding job AP has done so far has not been more widely-recognised (e.g. that our recent form might have warranted a feature on Football Focus)

I guess what I'm saying is that, if the tie does catch media attention due to Luton's non-league status it might also have the effect of bringing Saints back into the public eye and show people that we're becoming a force again!

COYR!

Haven't checked but during my 50+ years supporting the Saints (no wonder I'm permanently exhausted/psychologically scarred), I can't ever remember us losing to a non league team.

I certainly can remember us playing Woking (4-0 I think and didn't we play an amateur international midfielder by the name of Hugh Lindsey?), Walton & Hersham (won 6-1 away which was unheard of for us to score so many away from home at the time) and Weymouth (3-0 at home?)

Also think we played one of these games in dark blue/light blue quarters which was the colours of the Hampshire Rep side at the time.

All this from (fading) memory. Any onne else around who can remember better than me?

We'll have players returning from loan though.

Not bothered about this comp, I know that sounds bad but we don't need the pay days and we have more important goals, this of course is my opinion, saying that I want us to win every game.. rock and hard place springs to mind.

When will people realise that Marcus isn't here to p*ss money up the wall like the guys at Man City and Pompey. Saints are being run as a business venture and part of that involved maximising our income. I think Marcus will take a very dim view if the team or Pardew took an attitude of 'we don't need the money' in any competition.

IF we beat Luton and made it through a couple more rounds, the income from gates and prize money would pay for Dean Hammond.

Could be wrong, but I'd have though the FA could have staff working new years day for such an occurance.

As long as the fax is working there's not usually a problem.

It is if the club is waiting for confirmation that the fax has been received in order to be allowed to play a player.

They even shifted the Transfer Window to 5pm on Sept 1 "in August" because Aug 31 was a Bank Holiday and there wouldn't be anyone around to process transfers, no sign of them moving it this time as there are 30 days for transfers left afterwards.

Normally the fax will acknowledge itself, but there might be a cleaner sitting next to the machine with a mug of tea and a few mince pies.

Or unplugging it. Who uses bloody fax machines nowadays anyway ? There's absolutely no reason why online transfers couldn't be processed (other than the adminners wanting to protect their bureaucracy).

You're an admin; can you get the bit in bold posted at the top of the forum or something?

I find the blasé attitude towards Marcus' money that often gets expressed on here to be quite astounding.

This is a big game for Luton

I believe they will bring at least 2,000, maybe more.

Leeds only attracted 10,000 for their game v Kettering and they are flying

why are we a;ways comparing ourselves to other clubs. It doesn;t matter and besdies, Luton are better supported than Kettering, prices are higher and it was mid-week so hardly a fair form of measurement.

Absolutely correct. Indeed if we do 'rest' players we will deserve everything we get - not just in the Cup game but in the subsequent league games when no doubt rested players will prove to be short of just a little match sharpness that you only get by keeping playing. Also not is it not just a bad idea in these terms but such arrogance and for a team in League One - unbelieveable!

I'm sure AP will field his strongest available side anyway. Probably our first look at the new centre half we'll be getting.

A family friend plays for Luton, i have already texted him to say 'never mind there's always next year'

It is causing a rift in our family as some want to support Luton on the day!!! Son in law and son are already doing so (he's a toffee anyway)
