6th biggest crowd of the weekend

I haven't seen much mention of yesterday's superb attendance yet (apologies if I have missed it.)

It is worth highlighting that Saints v Exeter was the biggest crowd outside the Prem, it was also bigger than 5 Prem games - Hull, Birmingham, Burnley, Fulham and Wigan.

And I think it was probably the biggest League crowd Exeter have ever played in front of.

If our average this season is bigger than Pompey's biggest gate - that should settle all arguments as to who really is the biggest club on the south coast.

Although yesterday's game was not pretty, I hope some of the missing thousands come back another day.

Don't be silly of course it isn't!

You only have to go back to 2005 and they played in front of 67,551 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup 3rd round. Go back further in time when crowds were higher in terraced grounds and they will have played infront of over 30k on quite a few occasions over the last 100 years.

It may well have been a large crowd, but I have read a number of times that the crowd was quiet. What's the point in going if you're going to be quiet? I haven't gone to any games this season, but if I did go I would be making noise. Those people who have gone along, just because it was Boxing day and then just stood there cannot claim to be real fans. Real fans make noise. I would have made some noise if I had gone. I'd rather we have small noisy crowds as it makes a better atmosphere than a large silent crowd. Get behind the team FFS!!

Yeah everyone. Get behind the team FFS! Wiltshire Saint hasn't been to a game this season, but we should get behind the team like he does. Or says. Whatever, he's obviously studied the game in some depth and is very knowledgable about such matters.

WS; you're obviously a very poor wind-up, or worse, a complete moron. I'm guessing (and hoping, for your sake) it's the former.

I assume if they aren't 'real' that these extra fans are just a figment of WS's imagination.

But were there really 30890 people actually there. ?

Quite a few empty seats around, and the Itchen/Northam corner was empty

Have to say I am gutted still that the Itchen Northam corner has been emptied. It was for sometime the best place in the ground - it had a decent view of the game, great interaction with the away fans and also with the Northam. It was as if we hemmed in the away support and blew it away!

Hope we get the Itchen North back soon... keep coming everyone!

Every saleable seat was sold, apart from the corporates, which were as full as they have been for at least 2 seasons. The Itchen/Northam block was segregation and not sold. There will have been the odd season ticket holder that was away for xmas and couldn't make it or had other commitments but I'm pretty sure that the stated attendance was a correct reflection of how many were in the ground.

He wasn't talking about blocks 1, 2 and 3, which were open and sold out. Block 48 was the one kept empty.

It was 1,700 under the official capacity (tho' due to segregation that figure will never be realised unless it's ever Saints fans only) and it was a total sell-out to home fans. The only areas still available were corporate (which are included in the official capacity) and in the away section, exactly where the empty Itchen/Northam corner was. These seats are in the away section and never available to Saints fans.

30,890 is an excellent crowd in the Prem, in the third tier of English football it is amazing.

From ML and NC's point of view, this data shows that we have a self-sustaining premiership sized level of support. The Exeter game was further proof.

So, we've got the infrastructure and support to match, or even exceed the achievements of Birmingham/ Bolton/ Wigan/ Hull / West Ham etc.

All they need to do is (continue to) manage the club wisely, and invest a bit of money (well, maybe 30Mil) over the next couple of years in training facilities (ie: player development) and players AND be patient. As Pards has said, we're a work in progress and it's a 5 year plan to get back to (and be competitive in) the Premier league.

I hope there's plenty of people travelling today to make up for the poor atmosphere on Boxing Day. Come on people - get behind the team!

Ok, maybe you don't want people behind the team, but I do. That's what being a fan is all about, getting behind the team. Maybe you should take your negativity elsewhere?

I have no idea what you are on about. Also, you have insulted me and I expect the mods to infract you.

it wasn't. hth

You do realise that supporting a team involves more than just paying £5 to start threads telling people the results of games? Being fans, most of us know most of the results. On the odd occasion I forget a game is on or have other things to do then I usually find out myself by looking at the Saints official website. Maybe it's time you stopped trying to put http://www.saintsfc.co.uk (the official site, in case you're not aware) out of business and focussed on supporting the team?

I'm one of the so-called floaters, I can't make every game but try to make it down to St Mary's when I can. The next game I can make is the Huddersfield match, though it falls on my girlfriend's birthday, so I've got some presents to buy her to be able to make it.

WS is a WUM - but one thing he is right about is that we English are generally a quiet bunch. 30k was a great attendance, but it wasn't exactly a loud a raucous atmosphere. From were I sit (quietly) in the Itchen stand the Northam seemed distinctly subdued. Shame we can't generate the same low pitched intimidating gutteral noise that these boys can:

That sort of atmosphere would be amazing, but sadly with the 'family' crowd uk football has it'd never happen.
