SNSUN Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 IMO we're only a central midfielder away from having a full squad anyway, else it'd cause player unrest. At a push I could see us bringing in a left midfielder, but aside from that, nope. It'd ruin morale.

hypochondriac Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 Who do you think we will need in the summer? I would let Perry go and then we will need a CB. Let Murty and (possibly) Otesemebor go if he doesn't cut it and replace with a RB. May have to consider a new striker with pace if Connoly continues to be injured. Get rid of Wotton, probably Waigo and make James backup which could mean a new RM (keep Antonio as an impact sub.) Still need to sort out our LM IMO and decide where Lallana is best at (if he is still here of course.) Ponty Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 I agree, if we go up, Hypo, but if we don't then I think that fewer changes would be more ideal. This team really needs to become a solid unit and we'll get that through continuity. There aren't many (if any) players in the first 16 who can't get us out of this league. Save the spending for the push through the CCC.
Pilchards Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 If that's the case then the last 3 signings could be a waste as we should of got 3 of forte's standards which would of flew us to the championships. Colinjb Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 Spending is all well and good, but it would have to be Pardew's call as to who we bring in. Saint Fan CaM Posted 24 January, 2010 Share Posted 24 January, 2010 I think quite possibly the draw might have changed things. If Markus and Nicola have any inkling about what beating Pompey would do to the gates/morale of the club/city etc., then they would probably be telling AP to (within reason) make sure he had the depth of squad quality that would ensure the results potential. Based on the potential at the moment we could achieve the following realistically... a. Win the JPT. b. Get into the semi-finals of the FA Cup (beyond that will be too much for us IMO). c. Win the Play-Off final. To really give a great chance of doing this we ideally need... a. a really good RB and possibly a LB (cover for Harding). b. a really good CAM (Morgan to cover), a really good CDM (as cover to Hammond). c. a really good left winger (e.g. Puncheon). That would bolster the squad completely and the key would be to buy players that are above L1 standard ready for CCC life. Certain fringe players would then be moved on (Gillet, Ollie, Pulis, Forecast, Wotton etc). Based on Antonio's increasingly good performances, I am not sure Waigo will be kept on after the summer BTW.

TBH I don't think they thought we would beat Ipswich and Otsemobor was possibly the best out there available at the time within budget. With Wembley just 90mins away, there is an excellent chance of sustaining more than just a play-off push this season which means more income. However we've put two tough games to bed since bringing in Otsemobor and you can bet that we'll get a maximum gate for the Poopey game - realistically that will be almost as good as an FA Cup final for a L1 team. One other point worth noting is that it might not mean buying a player or two....could be that AP can convince a good Prem player or two to come here until the end of the season on loan just to give the club the impetus it needs to achieve JPT and play-off final wins. I'm struggling to think of any other position where we could sign anyone apart from maybe a pacy striker? I think the problem with Morgan is he should be playing at a higher level, a lot of people don't understand how this can affect players (not saying your one of them btw hypo) as they believe if your too good you should be dominant. IMO Mellis was probably too good for this level also. Morgan will be a great player and i am also seeing the seeds of a good player in James, he has a good passing range, his shooting is looking good and his dead ball delivery is 'usually' pretty good. He is also turning into a nasty, niggly little bastard and so i think if he bulks up or learns to really tackle properly he will become an accomplished CCC midfielder. And i think he could probably strike up a decent partnership in James. As for the extra, yeah a pacey striker would be good but waigo could probably do that if asked, i am a little worried about cover to lambo tbh mate. I am concerned this has not been addressed as like it or loath it the ugly long ball game is a dimension we can play, and it works. Without lambert we will miss that handful upfront. Or a LM perhaps ?? I really hope barnard turns out to be a new ormerod, but perhaps with a better goal ratio. This will benefit lambert no end. He has the potential to be a good RB, we can obviously afford the wages to take a gamble on the boy for 6 months. If pardew can get the best out of him he will be a great signing. If not, we lose him at the end of the season to no great loss. If he is not good enough that means spending some of next years budget on a RB, if he turns out to be a real Gem, then that money will go elsewhere. Alanh Posted 25 January, 2010 Share Posted 25 January, 2010 I think the Ipswich game proved that we could improve our first team in just about every position. They were quicker than us, controlled the ball better than us in midfield and had a much stronger defence. We managed to put away more chances than they did and won a one off match but I have no doubts that they would beat us more often than not if we played regularly. As for buying more players. I think we only need one more for this season, subject to long term injuries and the subsequent use of the loan market. If we don't get promoted then next season we will need to replace Murty, Wotton and Perry at least. We may also need to replace Connolly and we might not resign Waigo. That will mean another spending spree in the summer and if the quality that comes in are all better than those leaving our squad should be good enough for promotion. If we do get promoted then major spending will be required as of the current first team squad I think only Davis, Fonte, Harding, Spiderman, James, Lallana and Lambert are first teamers at the moment. Gorgiesaint Posted 25 January, 2010 Share Posted 25 January, 2010 Also if it is true that we have a fair amount of funds available, why have we not bought some more decent CCC level players? Its a problem with the January transfer window, you get a much better choice of players available in the summer window. Now we could just go out and waive enough cash to change people's minds but that doesn't appear to be the way the club is run - and I'm glad thats the case. I don't want us to be the Man City of L1. Money therefore can only be spent if we can somehow make a really shock signing, like convincing a Premiership quality player to come here, which is unlikely. Although not impossible. However, a big signing in the summer would go down well. Signing a Premiership quality player would just upset the balance in the dressing room and break up the team spirit that has been built up since Pardew took charge. Imagine what the other players would feel if someone walks in who's on 2 or 3 times the wages that they're on. Patience is the key - Pardew needs to keep the dressing room together and the squad tightly knit. That will be the key tolong term success. Rory Posted 25 January, 2010 Share Posted 25 January, 2010 If we do go up this season, how many of the players we have at the moment are going to play in the CCC? We've signed Barnard but the chances are Pardew will splash out on another striker if we do go up. I feel quite sorry for the players we are signing as they will be replaced by better players as we progress. If we do ever make it to the Premier League, you can bet we won't be playing Fonte, who was quoted as saying Saints were a quicker proposition to get to the promised land than Crystal Palace.
