Comments from Huddersfield fans...

Fair play to the 600 odd Huddersfield fans who travelled so far mid week. The ones we spoke to we were top blokes and very complimentary of Saints, online they were too...

A few choice comments from one board...

"So as someone mentioned earlier..is there 7 teams better than Saints? "

"Southampton spent more on a couple of players in January than our ENTIRE squad cost. They pay Lambert more in wages than around 1/2 our first team are on cummulatively.

"The squad they now have would easily be a top half championship side. Get a grip and sense of perspective, 1 loss in around 11 games i.e. just under a quarter of a season!"

"It happens ... it's a new, young team against a big club. "

"Well done to the Saints though, it takes a decent side to do that to us. "

"What a load of tosh, Leeds might be your biggest game of the season but I think the Town management won't share your views. No excuses for tonight, Southampton sound to be in a different league to us and if we don't improve soon it could get really embarrassing. "

"saints to finish on 80 points. you heard it here first. "

"Roundly beaten by a fast, slick Southampton side this evening. "

"Soton are an expensively assembled team now - lambert £1m+, barnard £250k, centre back from palace £1m+ to name but 3 and will be firm favourites to return to the championship next season if they dont make it this time"

"We lose one game away from home against one of the best teams in this division and suddenly we are "****" ! "

"Don't often post but feel as though I should tonight. It was payback we battered them and should have scored loads if it wasn't for Kelvin Davis in August.

As painful as it was Southampton, lets be fair a big club, did us. But I've got to be honest would I rather not take a hiding than be competative in this league - would I hell!

We got beat but even Man United have got some beatings on the way to league titles. I may be wrong but I reckon the performance will be 100% better at Gillingham and if at the end of the season we end up outside the play-off place then and only then will be the time to judge the players and staff.

Remember Southampton aren't exactly a non-runner, there is a multi-millionaire bankrolling them!"

And from Lee Clark himself....

"Southampton won every first and second ball; they passed it better; competed better and got crosses in far too easily. It was men against boys. I knew that Southampton are a good side. I knew that they had bought very well, had some terrific individual players and were playing as a very good side given their record over the past ten to twelve games, so they didn't surprise me."

How good is it to hear comments like that about our team?

He's right, they did batter us up there... teams :

1-3 Davis ,Harding ,Murty ,Thomas ,Perry (Lancashire ,80 ) ,James (Thomson ,54 ) ,Wotton ,Schneiderlin (Mellis ,54 ) ,Lallana ,Lambert ,Rasiak

Subs not used Bialkowski,Paterson,Oscar Gobern,Saganowski,

5-0 Davis ,Harding ,Otsemobor ,Fonte ,Jaidi (Seaborne ,80 ), Hammond ,Puncheon ,Schneiderlin ,Lambert (Oxlade-Chamberlain ,86 ) ,Lallana ,Barnard (Waigo ,78 )

Subs not used: Bialkowski,Thomas,Antonio,Wotton,

The ones in bold are no longer first choice/don't get in the team/have been sold. Bit harsh on Murty, but everywhere else there are improvements...

I have to say the three or four muppets shouting abuse at the three Huddersfield coaches as they went past on Northam Road need to have a word with themselves. Anyone that travels those sort of distances for a midweek game deserves some sort of respect. Children.

I witnessed that as well Chez (by the Alfred pub). However, if you do give gestures out of the window then people will say something!

a complete lack of class to add to the pathetic "your support is ****ing ****" chants, MC build up before the game, goal celebration music (thank god that was stopped)...meh, nothing is going to take the smile off my face today.

Met a couple of Huddersfield fans in the pub before the game, and then saw them afterwards too. They were full of praise for us, the way we played, our players, everything. Nice blokes too, I think it's good when you can have a chat to the opposition's fans, and not have them starting on you all the time.

Yeah, was bit of an embarrassing contrast to the sportsmanship the Huddersfield fans showed outside, shaking hands and complimenting our team and whatnot.

They were a class act, good luck to them (though not if it's at our expense, of course).

Have a friend whos a HTFC fan said they were awfull and didnt turn up, but i think it was a case of we outclassed them and would not let them play.

Just hope we get another 3 points saturday and HTFC drop points or/and some of the others in the playoffs.

That may be the case but all I heard from them inside the ground was "Play up Pompey" and "Your ground's too big for you". Pretty embarrassing chants considering recent history on both those subjects.

I cannot understand for the life of me why any teams supporters wish to sing Play up Pompey at St Mary's. It's so cringeworthy.

I went with my mate of 30 years whose from Huddersfield originally. He said our performance was the best he's seen for years, and he follows them regulary.

In 30 years of friendship, we've managed to get to 2 games together, the first one was a one man thrashing at The Dell, when Matty got all 4 and then again last night. We couldn't make the away game, as his daughter was married that weekend. He is a good luck omen, and I'm trying to persuade him to come to the Leeds game with me.

This was the case at Norwich - it's not that they didn't turn up - they really tried to play football (as it sounded as if HTFC did last night) but we wanted it more, kept it better & stuck it in their net more regularly!

From where I was I could also hear an occasional 'when the town go marching in', which is not just cringeworthy -- it's plain stupid -- because of course every time, saints fans joined in and drowned it. There aren't many teams who are stupid enough to try to sing a version of 'when the saints' at st mary's

Haha that's true, they did try and get that going. Huddersfield: Not one of the brightest set of fans we've had down at SMS.

I remember that!

It was one of the League Cup two-leg round matches where we introduced £3 pay-on-the-night. Let's just say I think the official attendance may have been somewhat lower than the actual attendance!

matty never seemed to need to try, did he? I remember a post-match interview when he scored 2 against blackburn (i think?), absolute blinders both of them, the first controlled with the sole of his left boot ffs, the second was a trap on his thigh and a thumping volley that flew in. When the interviewer showed him the second one and asked him about it matty just said "well, i was too tired to do anything else" :D Pure class

I loved MLT's post-match comments! I remember (think it was against Newcastle) when he scored 2 wonder goals; the interviewer was gushing praise and wonderment and asked Matt if his second goal was the greatest goal he'd ever scored (seem to remember MLT flicking it over his shoulder with the back of his right heel before burying it) and Matt's response was "Nah - I scuffed it...!"

I defer to those who remember the Bates/Channon/etc eras, but in my generation there is only one legend...

So he expected to get battered 5-0?

If you can't understand that a crowd singing Pay Up Pompey may sound a lot like Play up Pompey on the tv, especially when we are actually playing Pompey, then i in turn despair at your desperation and poke you in both eyes with my forefinger and little finger

If you can't understand why Pay up Pompey works then I despair

Play and Pay when chanted by large numbers of people in unison sound very similar. Thus it loses the effect as it sounds like the Northam is just singing their song.

Which is why "Wind up Pompey, Pompey wind up" works better. Has two meanings and is clearly recognizable rather than pay/play confusion.
